Pakistan drone attack victim from Punjab's Ferozepur succumbs to injuries

Sukhwinder Kaur, 50, one of the three members of a family injured in a Pakistani drone strike at Khai Pheme Ki village in Punjab's border district of Ferozepur on May 9, succumbed to her injuries at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in Ludhiana on Monday night. Sukhwinder is the first civilian casualty of the recent cross-border drone strikes carried out by Pakistan in Punjab. With this, the toll in the Pakistani shelling and drone attacks on Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab following Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps on May 7 has touched 26. Ferozepur deputy commissioner Deepshikha Sharma said Sukhwinder had suffered 100% burns after debris from a Pakistani drone, intercepted by India's air defence system, fell on their car sparking a fire that injured the family of three. The condition of Sukhwinder's husband, Lakhwinder Singh, 55, who suffered 70% burns, remains critical at DMCH. Their son, Jaswant Singh, 24, who was injured in the legs from the debris, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ferozepur and is on the road to recovery. The attack, which occurred around 9pm on May 9 in the border village 12km from Ferozepur, is the first in which civilians sustained injuries in Punjab. I t was part of a broader series of drone incursions from Pakistan that targeted 26 locations across northern India, including multiple attempts thwarted in Ferozepur and Fazilka districts. Security agencies are probing the incident, with senior officials confirming that most drones were neutralised before causing damage. Sukhwinder's body will be brought to her native village for the last rites later on Tuesday.

Kaur sustained 100 per cent burn injuries, while her husband suffered 70 per cent burns. They were both referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in Ludhiana. Their son, Jaswant Singh, sustained injuries but remains admitted at Ferozepur hospital and his condition is stable. A family relative said Kaur died and added that the condition of both Lakhwinder and Jaswant is fine. "The police will be going to DMCH in Ludhiana to bring the body of the deceased back to Ferozepur," the relative added. The state police said the car's light was on, due to which this incident might have happened. On May 9 evening, several drones were spotted in the Ferozepur cantonment and nearby areas amid the India-Pakistan tension following Operatation Sindoor.

Jakhar bats for special economic package for Punjab

BJP state president Sunil Jakhar highlighted the urgent need for a special economic package for Punjab during an all-party meeting held on Saturday in Chandigarh. The meeting, attended by governor Gulab Chand Kataria, chief minister Bhagwant Mann and representatives of major political parties, addressed the ongoing challenges faced by the state, particularly due to its status as a border state. Jakhar emphasised that the economic hardships Punjab has endured are not just a result of current circumstances but are rooted in its historical position on the border. Speaking to the media at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday after meeting victims of recent shelling and drone attacks in Ferozepur, Jakhar stressed the importance of collective action. He argued that given Punjab's strategic location and the economic constraints it has faced — such as disrupted trade, border restrictions, and heightened security risks — it is now crucial to secure a structured and sustained form of central support. Jakhar proposed that Punjab be granted special status similar to Jammu and Kashmir or Himachal Pradesh. He pointed out that the state's industries, agriculture, and border communities have long been burdened by proximity to Pakistan, with limited trade routes, hesitancy from investors, and farmers bearing the brunt of ongoing uncertainties. Jakhar assured that the Punjab BJP would engage with the central leadership to advocate for the state's case with clarity and determination, ensuring that the needs of farmers, businesses, youth, and the broader Punjabi community are addressed with urgency.
