Driver killed when tractor-trailer plunged off Delaware bridge was married Brooklyn dad

The driver killed when his tractor-trailer cab plunged off the Delaware Memorial Bridge was a married dad from Brooklyn. Zair Murzakov, 35, died when the vehicle he was driving crossed three lanes and crashed through a concrete wall at around 3:40 a.m. on Friday, plunging more than 170 feet into the Delaware River below, the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) said. 3 Zair Murzakov has been named as the driver killed in Friday's crash on the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Gofundme Murzakov was traveling from New Jersey into Delaware when he suddenly crossed three lanes and hit the concrete wall, officials said, as the exact circumstances are still being investigated. A fundraiser has already collected more than $17,000 to pay for Murzakov's body to be shipped back to his homeland, without detailing where that is. His family's 'greatest wish is to bring their loved one back to his homeland and lay him to rest with dignity and tradition,' the fundraiser states of the married father. 3 Murzakov veered through three lanes of traffic and hit a concrete wall. Delaware River and Bay Authority The cab had no trailer attached at the time and was registered in West Chester Township, Ohio, Delaware Public Media reported. Water and tide conditions meant that Murzakov's body and the trailer weren't recovered until shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday, some 20 feet below the water, the DRBA said. 3 The vehicle plunged some 170 feet into the Delaware River below. AP A crane and barge from the Bridge Ship Collision Protection construction project provided support to the Delaware State Police Marine dive unit, Holloway Terrace Fire Company, and other recovery groups.

Driver of tractor-trailer cab that drove off side of Delaware Memorial Bridge into Delaware River identified

The body of the driver who drove off the side of the Delaware Memorial Bridge and plunged into the Delaware River below was identified Monday. The driver was identified as 35-year-old Zair Murzakov of Brooklyn, New York, according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority. Officials also revealed the cab of the tractor-trailer that Murzakov was driving is registered to XFR8 LLC of West Chester Township, Ohio. Early Friday morning, the tractor-trailer cab was traveling on the downslope of the Delaware Memorial Bridge's southbound side when it crossed three lanes of traffic and struck a concrete barrier, breaking through and plunging into the water below. It's still unclear what exactly caused the crash. Search and rescue crews recovered the 35-year-old's body and the cab Saturday morning just after 11 a.m., according to the DRBA. The cab had previously been located during an initial search Friday. One major factor that helped responders act quickly: the crash was caught live on a traffic camera, which alerted crews in real time. "Anybody going over like that, there should be a retention wall for safety purposes," Troy Gross Sr. from Pennsville said. "So no truck can ever do that, no matter what the speed." No other vehicles were hit or went into the water in the crash. The crash is under investigation with the DRBA police department.

Tractor, driver recovered from Delaware River after Delaware Memorial Bridge crash

A tractor and its driver have been recovered from the Delaware River after falling July 11 from the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The Delaware River and Bay Authority announced on July 12 that crews from the Delaware State Police Marine Dive Unit and the Holloway Terrace Fire Company helped in a coordinated effort to recover the driver and the tractor around 11 a.m. on July 12. A crane and barge repositioned from the active construction site of the Bridge Ship Collision Protection project were used in the recovery efforts. The body was extracted using a Hurst tool, which is made by the company that manufactures the "jaws of life" that emergency personnel use to extract trapped victims in a variety of incidents. The tractor, which was not pulling a trailer, went over the bridge around 3:40 a.m. on July 11 after crossing three lanes of traffic on the downslope, southbound side. It was found at 10:45 a.m. in 20 feet of water that same day. DRBA said crews arrived at the scene at 6 a.m. July 12, but didn't begin recovery operations until 9 a.m. because of water and tide conditions. The investigation to determine the cause of the crash and the identification of the driver is still ongoing, DRBA said in a statement on July 12. Tractor-trailer plunges off Delaware Memorial Bridge; divers search for occupants

A search and rescue operation is underway after a semi-truck crashed and then plunged off the Delaware Memorial Bridge into the river below early July 11, officials said. At around 3:40 a.m. local time on Friday, a bobtail tractor traveling over the bridge crossed three lanes of traffic and crashed into a concrete wall, the Delaware River & Bay Authority said in a press release. The impact collapsed the wall, and the truck "careened into the Delaware River," DRBA said. Shortly after 11 a.m., crews recovered the cab, which was located in about 20 feet of water, James Salmon, DRBA's director of communications and marketing told USA TODAY. "Dive crews are currently assessing the safety of area where the cab is located to investigate further," Salmon wrote in a statement. It's unclear how many occupants were inside the truck at the time of the crash. There were no additional details about occupants after the cab was recovered, Salmon said. No other vehicles were impacted. The DRBA said the truck was traveling southbound into Delaware when the accident occurred on the downslope of the bridge. Dive teams were on site for the search effort, DRBA said. They included units from local and state emergency responders as well as members of the U.S. Coast Guard Air and Marine Units, according to the agency. The accident is under investigation, according to DRBA. The Delaware Memorial Bridge, which spans more than 10,000 feet, crosses the Delaware River and links Delaware to New Jersey. More than 100,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day, according to DRBA. The right lane was also temporarily closed for construction, but reopened around 8 a.m. local time.
