Springboks down Georgia during a thrilling encounter in Mbombela
This performance by the Springboks only touched the edges of the realm of rout but to be fair it was more about the route they pursued to this year's Rugby Championship for the defending champions. There was much tinkering in selection with 46 players chosen across four matches and as a result continuity and cohesion was sacrificed at the altar of squad depth. The mixing and matching will be reduced in the two home Tests against Australia as head coach Rassie Erasmus fine tunes his selections ahead to their most pressing engagement of the year against the All Blacks in Auckland. In Georgia they had opponents full of fight and fervour but the Springboks gradually sapped their energy from their fired-up tourists. With the game gradually loosening there were times the Springboks were overzealous in the way they expressed themselves in attack but by then they had earned the right through the toil of their forwards. There were times they dazzled but first they had to meet the challenge of the Georgians head-on. No.8 Cobus Wiese stepped into the breach for his banned brother Jasper and there were times he lacked finesse. His job however was to bring punch to the Bok carries and dead weight to their first line of defence. From the ensuing line-out their maul reaped the rewards much in the way Italy did in the recent series against the Boks. The Boks felt the need for an urgent and telling riposte. The Boks showed the sharp end of their attacking prowess when Aphelele Fassi, Grant Williams, Van der Merwe all carried with gusto before Nortje's delightful vignette found a momentum fuelled Moodie who rounded off the game's most thrilling passage in the 18th minute. As thrilling as that was, it is unlikely to compare with what awaits in the Rugby Championship. Tribunal says Canal+ acquisition of MultiChoice presents minimal competition concerns
Multichoice has been struggling to retain subscribers for its pay television platform, DStv, ven as it seeks to expand its digital footprint through investments in online streaming service Showmax. Image: File Tawanda Karombo The Competition Competition said on Thursday that the planned acquisition of MultiChoice Group (MCG) by the French television powerhouse Canal+ has revealed minimal overlaps between the two entities, given their respective market sizes. However, the proposed merger will necessitate a fundamental restructuring to separate the licensed broadcasting unit, which will transition into a standalone entity named LicenseCo. MultiChoice has been struggling to retain subscribers for its pay television platform, DStv, ven as it seeks to expand its digital footprint through investments in online streaming service Showmax. The acquisition by Canal+ is positioned as a revitalising force for MultiChoice, pending final approvals from regulatory bodies and competition authorities. The Tribunal on Thursday heard from the Competition Commission that there were overlaps between MultiChoice and Canal+. These overlaps include included horizontal and vertical considerations. Next Stay Close ✕ It was the Competition Commission's findings that MultiChoice acquires and aggregate broadcasting content across sports and movies under its subsidiaries M-Net and SuperSport while Canal+ also has similar offerings although at a small scale. 'Vertically, Canal+ currently provides content to LicenseCo, which is part of MCG while its affiliated entity, Havas Media, purchases advertising space from MCG's sales house, Digital Media Sales (DMS),' said Ndivhuwo Moleya, senior analyst for mergers and acquisitions at the Competition Commission. The Commission said these links presented potential vertical overlaps in content and advertising supply chains, but it deemed them as insignificant. 'Looking at the number of channels that Canal+ supplies, in particular on the DStv platform, we understand it's not more than three. The upshot of that is that from a horizontal perspective, (the overlap) is very small because of the smallness of the content that Canal+ provides downstream,' said Moleya. According to the Competition Commission, the broader content market includes numerous global suppliers, indicating low risk of anti-competitive effects. Moreover, overlaps within the upstream advertising market, regarding the the sale of advertising slots on broadcast platforms and the downstream advertising market involving agencies such as Havas Media that purchase advertising on behalf of clients, were also determined to be less significant. In arriving at the determination, regulators adopted a 'worst-case scenario' to ensure all potential competition concerns were examined. The merger between MCG and Canal+ will be subject to a resutructuring exercise to ring-fence MultiChoice's licensed broadcasting entity, MultiChoice (Pty) Ltd. This unit will be hived off into a standalone company, LicenseCo, in line with local regulatory requirements. After settlement of the merger, the combined group will have no interest or control in LicenseCo. However, details of the this carve-out structure for LicenseCo remain confidential. LicenceCo will be majority-owned by previously disadvantaged and black economic empowerment companies, with MCG holding a 49% interest. Canal+ has, however, previously said that it was still engaging with Phuthuma Nathi, which has been earmarked to hold a 27% interest in LicenceCo, although the board has already given its support for the transaction. Black-owned and managed companies, Identity Partners Itai Consortium owned by Sipho Maseko And Sonja De Bruyn, and Afrifund Consortium have also been roped into LicenceCo, bringing 'highly experienced leaders' with 'great commercial and industry' knowledge. 'This seems a clever way to get around foreign ownership rules assuming they've had at least informal approval from Independent Communications Authority of SA (or discussions) and now deal can go ahead,' market analyst Simon Brown previously told Business Report. The CEO of Canal+, Maxime Saada, said earlier this year that the acquisition of MultiChoice was an 'opportunity to create a unique global media company, with a strong presence across Africa with the scale, expertise, and creativity to compete and partner with the largest players' within the media and entertainment sectors. He became a household name during his 7de Laan days as Sheldon in the iconic SABC2 soapie The actor and television presenter also played the role of Zane in the 2007 mini-series After Nine and appeared in Erfsondes, Arendsvlei and Swartwater Denver, who married his 7de Laan co-star Ingrid Paulus, dreams of one day portraying the character of Hamlet. But for now it is Skemergrond and not Shakespeare for the talented actor. Rapid-fire Q&A with Denver Vraagom You play the role of Dominee Wayne. Without giving too much away, tell us more about the character. Denver: Wayne Ackerman is the kind of reverend who challenges stereotypes. He's unorthodox – an energetic, funky minister who uses humour and creativity to make faith more accessible to everyone in the church. For him, singing is the best way to spread a message – no matter how off-key or flat you're singing. Instead of long, formal sermons, he prefers to share his message during a walk in the garden or along the river. Is Dominee Wayne a man who's going to shake things up? One aunt in the congregation finds him incredibly annoying at first, but she'll later come to realise she actually likes his approach. Church should be a place for everyone. Fill the building with life. What do you enjoy most about playing a minister? Strangely enough, I always wanted to be a minister when I was a child – I was an altar boy back then. But drama and sport eventually took over my life. What makes this role so enjoyable is that it's a new challenge. I can play only so many gangsters and messed-up characters! Dominee Wayne brings out a different side of me. A softer side. A side that's become more important to me – especially since I started my sober journey. [Denver stopped drinking alcohol seven years ago.] You bring a lot of soap opera experience – both in front of and behind the cameras. What makes Skemergrond different for you? Denver: I get to play and explore a bit more with Skemergrond. Soap operas are like a sausage machine – fast-paced and structured. In soapies, we usually shoot with three cameras and a vision mixer who cuts between the shots in real time, almost like a DJ. With Skemergrond, we work with only two cameras, and the setup is more dynamic. The angles are changed for every shot, and the lighting is constantly adjusted. That gives me space to explore different performance options for each scene. You recently moved to the Western Cape with your wife, Ingrid Paulus, and daughters, Skye and Hannah. What do you enjoy most about life in Cape Town? Denver: I'm actually back where it all began for me 32 years ago! Ingrid now has the chance to explore new career opportunities She recently did some radio work, including a radio drama and directing book readings. She also does some dubbing again. The kids love the beach, of course, and we're just a five-minute walk from the ocean here in Saldanha Bay. And we're closer to my family, who I didn't see much of for nearly 20 years. If you could swap positions with any Springbok player, who would it be and why? Denver: Cheslin Kolbe! Back in Standard 5 (now Grade 7), I played wing for Diaz Primary in Mossel Bay. But after one big tackle and a lot of blood, I decided ballet might be safer. I still dream of scoring that perfect try! Denver: As a director, I'd love to bring two specific projects to life: a drama series and a film. As an actor, I'd like to play Hamlet. When you look back on your life, what are the biggest highlights? Denver: The highlight(s) are my children, and my wife, who has stood by me through everything. And that life-saving moment when I gave up drinking seven years ago. What does the future hold? Denver: To continue growing as a unit with my family, and hopefully take on more soul-nourishing roles with plenty of magic, both in front of and behind the camera and on stage.
