Jeffrey a political hypocrite: Bung
Published on: Friday, May 30, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 30, 2025 By: Nikko Fabian Text Size: Bung (left) said Dr Jeffrey's (right) actions demonstrate a failure to understand the difference between power and responsibility, ultimately failing Sabah. Kota Kinabalu: Umno Sabah chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin slammed Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan's claims of defending Sabah's rights solely through local parties, calling it 'a broken tune.' Bung said the existence of 19 registered local parties in Sabah (as of Sept 30, 2024), questioning Dr Jeffrey's failure to unite them under a common platform. He criticised Jeffrey's past affiliations with national parties like Umno and PKR, accusing him of political hypocrisy for now advocating local exclusivity. Bung argued that Sabah's progress hinges on strategic national collaboration, not political isolationism, contrasting Jeffrey's rhetoric with his perceived lack of unity and inconsistent governance. Bung said Dr Jeffrey's actions demonstrate a failure to understand the difference between power and responsibility, ultimately failing Sabah. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Developing sustainable and inclusive geoparks
Published on: Friday, May 30, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 30, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: 'Together, PPGN and PLGN outline comprehensive strategies for planning, conservation, management, education and community participation, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),' Jenneth said. Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia is actively implementing the National Geopark Development Plan 2021–2030 (PPGN) as a key strategy to develop sustainable and inclusive geoparks across the country, said Minerals and Geoscience Department Deputy Director Jenneth Liliana Cyril. She said the implementation of PPGN plays a crucial role in ensuring geoparks in Malaysia serve not only as protected geological areas but also as catalysts for economic development, environmental education and local community wellbeing. 'Malaysia has made notable progress in geopark development, beginning with Langkawi's recognition as a Unesco Global Geopark (UGGp) in 2007, followed by Kinabalu Geopark being recognised as the country's second UGGp in 2023,' she said at the Malaysian Geopark Network Conference here. She noted that several other areas, including Jerai, Lembah Kinta, Labuan, Lenggong, Sarawak Delta, Stong, Gombak-Hulu Langat, Kenyir, Perlis and Lipis have been designated as National Geoparks. Moving forward to 2030, key targets include elevating Lenggong, Sarawak Delta and Gombak-Hulu Langat to UGGp status and recognising Melaka and Jelebu as new National Geoparks. 'The implementation of the National Geopark Development Plan is supported by the State Geopark Local Plan (PLGN), which will be adopted by state and local authorities once an area has received national geopark recognition. 'Together, PPGN and PLGN outline comprehensive strategies for planning, conservation, management, education and community participation, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),' Jenneth said. Advertisement She stressed that the real strength of geoparks lies in community involvement. 'Through the implementation of the Plan, local communities are empowered to engage in eco-tourism, small-scale heritage-based enterprises, conservation work and educational activities,' she added. These efforts, she said, contribute significantly to rural development and the economic empowerment of local populations. Janet reaffirmed JMG's commitment to working closely with State Governments, local authorities and international partners to ensure the effective and sustainable implementation of the Plan. She hoped Malaysia's geoparks will continue to grow as internationally recognised and locally treasured spaces that balance nature, heritage and people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ringgit expected to trade in cautious mode next week amid US tariff uncertainty
Published on: Saturday, May 31, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 31, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: The ringgit ended the week lower against the US dollar, closing at 4.2530/2605 on Friday from 4.2285/2345 a week earlier. Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit is likely to be traded cautiously against the US dollar next week amid ongoing uncertainties surrounding US tariff policy developments, said Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid. This follows renewed market uncertainty after a US federal appeals court granted the White House's request to temporarily pause a lower-court ruling that struck down President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports into the country. Earlier, the US Court of International Trade had ruled that the tariffs announced by Trump were illegal. However, the Trump administration challenged the ruling, which has briefly restored the tariffs while the appeal process runs its course. Besides that, he said attention will also turn to the upcoming US Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting scheduled for June 16-17. 'Key US economic indicators, particularly labour market data and inflation figures, will be closely watched. 'Important data releases such as nonfarm payrolls, the unemployment rate, and the Institute for Supply Management manufacturing index will serve as critical guidance for investors and traders,' he told Bernama, adding that current data suggests a moderating growth outlook. Advertisement Hence, Mohd Afzanizam said the FOMC is likely to maintain its interest rate stance, given that tariff-related policies could pose future inflationary risks. Given these developments, he opined that the USD/MYR is expected to remain within the RM4.22–RM4.24 range in the coming week. The ringgit ended the week lower against the US dollar, closing at 4.2530/2605 on Friday from 4.2285/2345 a week earlier. The local note traded lower against a basket of major currencies. The ringgit depreciated versus the euro to 4.8169/8254 at Friday's close from 4.7985/8053 at the end of last week. It also fell vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9531/9585 from 2.9502/9546 and inched down against the British pound to 5.7284/7385 from 5.7072/7153 a week earlier. However, the ringgit traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies. The local note improved against the Philippine peso to 7.62/7.64 from 7.65/7.66 a week before, edged up against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.4/261.1 from 260.7/261.1 and strengthened versus the Thai baht to 12.9507/9790 from 12.9744/13.0012 last week. However, it weakened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2938/3002 on Friday from 3.2891/2940 the previous week. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
