Jake Ferguson's $52 million contract exposes Cowboys' draft mistake
Jake Ferguson's new contract should be a happy day for the Cowboys front office. A fourth round pick turned into Dak Prescott's security blanket for the future. But beneath the high-fives and congratulations is an underhanded admittance that Dallas whiffed on a draft pick not too long ago. A year after Ferguson was drafted, the Cowboys selected tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second round of the 2023 draft. At the time, Ferguson only had 19 receptions for 174 yards his rookie year. Dalton Schultz was the starter that season but the Cowboys moved on from him. Schoonmaker, out of the University of Michigan, was expected to be an excellent blocking and pass-catching tight end. Instead it was Ferguson who stood out as a secure target over the middle while Schoonmaker struggled. The former Wolverine only had 27 receptions for 241 yards and one touchdown last season. He hasn't proven worthy of a second round investment. The Ferguson contract shows the Cowboys front office is admitting defeat on Schoonmaker. He has two years left on his rookie deal and still has a chance to prove himself, but Ferguson has taken the mantle as the primary tight end. It will take an injury or catastrophic shift if Dallas was to ever view Schoonmaker as a good pick. It's a rare miss for a front office that has drafted some elite talent. Cowboys give $52M, 4-year deal to player who 'set a new record for worst' TE season ever
The Dallas Cowboys' extension machine works on both ends of the spectrum equally. While most of the attention is paid to the front office's wait-and-get-played strategy that routinely has had them setting or blowing up the market with extensions for players like Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and soon-to-be Micah Parsons, the team also dabbles in making deals with players who don't have much leverage. Sometimes that takes the form of a deal after three years for Ezekiel Elliott, and other times it looks like the extension given to Jaylon Smith. On Sunday, as the second week of 2025 training camp gets underway, the team has announced a deal with a player many thought would wait until he's re-established himself as a league star, risking him to the open market. Tight end Jake Ferguson, who a year after making the Pro Bowl had a disastrous campaign, has agreed to a four-year extension worth $52 million. The deal contains $30 million in guarantees. The $13 million average salary for the four new years slots Ferguson as the No. 7 highest-paid TE in the league, sandwiched in between David Njoku in Cleveland and Cole Kmet in Chicago. The 49ers George Kittle and Cardinals' Trey McBride set the pace for the position making $19.1 million and $19 million, respectively. Ferguson's $30 million in guarantees also ranks seventh for the position. He was getting ready to play in the final year of his rookie contract for $3.4 million after being a fourth-round pick (No. 129 overall) in 2022. Assuming the deal lowers his base salary to league minimum of $1.1 million, his cap hit is going to basically remain the same, under $4 million. Ferguson suffered an early season injury last year and had what some consider the statistically worse season ever for a tight end, according to Football Outsiders' Aaron Schatz. Ferguson's record-low DYAR (defense-adjusted yards above replacement) number was fueled by a ton of drops and fumbles, and having no touchdowns to show for a ton of targets. There's been plenty of scuttlebutt this offseason about second-year tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford surpassing 2023 second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker on the depth chart and potentially emerging as the team's No. 1 TE in the very near future. However Ferguson has appeared to be back to his old self as he's reunited with QB Dak Prescott and reclaimed the throne despite Spann-Ford's progress from a up-and-coming blocking tight end into a well-rounded weapon. Ferguson did not fair well as the only other viable passing option after CeeDee Lamb in 2024, as defenses gave him bracket coverage. The addition of George Pickens to the offense should allow Ferguson to thrive again, and set him up for a highly productive 2025 campaign. The Cowboys' front office appears to believe what they are seeing and rather than waiting on a return to Pro Bowl status that would hike Ferguson's asking price, finalized the deal without impacting their 2025 cap space they can roll over to next season.

Cowboys sign TE Jake Ferguson to 4-year, $52 million extension
The Dallas Cowboys secured tight end Jake Ferguson for the foreseeable future, signing Dak Prescott's security blanket to a four-year extension worth $52 million, with $30 million guaranteed, the team announced Sunday. Ferguson was Dallas' fourth-round pick in 2022 and enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2023. In his second year, Ferguson was given a bigger role after Dalton Schultz left for the Houston Texans in free agency. Ferguson responded with 71 receptions for 761 yards and five touchdowns. Ferguson was expected to build on that season but had a down year in 2024, catching 59 passes for 494 yards and zero touchdowns. Injuries were a contributing factor, as was the instability at quarterback after Prescott was lost for the season. 'I have zero doubts in my mind that his production will get back to where it was the year before,' Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer said. 'I think last year was just kind of one of those years that you look back on your career and it was more of a fluke than anything.' ferg makes it official ✍️ 🔗: | @blockchain — Dallas Cowboys (@dallascowboys) July 27, 2025 The Cowboys currently have a contract situation dragging out publicly with star pass rusher Micah Parsons, but Parsons is in line to receive one of the largest contracts in NFL history. The Cowboys have been better about extensions with their players who aren't resetting markets, as evidenced by recent extensions to cornerback Trevon Diggs and Terence Steele, among others. Advertisement Ferguson is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Along with Parsons, the Cowboys also have pending business with left guard Tyler Smith, cornerback DaRon Bland and kicker Brandon Aubrey, the latter two entering the final year of their deals, too. The Cowboys have obviously been taking a lot of heat for how long they wait to do contracts with their top players. While Ferguson is not on the level of Parsons, CeeDee Lamb or Prescott, this is an important signing for the franchise. Ferguson is clearly their top tight end. He had a breakout 2023 season but his play dropped off last year as he battled injuries and Dallas lost Prescott eight games into the season. A healthy Ferguson is expected to rebound this year in an offense that is loaded with weapons in the passing game. 'He's a great leader. He's lighter (this season). He's moving around really, really well,' Schottenheimer said. 'I think last year you look at the first game against Cleveland and he gets his knee pretty banged up. And then he's got a concussion midseason at some point.' Prescott has an excellent rapport with the tight end, so it would be no surprise to see Ferguson have another Pro Bowl season if both players stay healthy. This is a good deal for both sides. The top tight ends average around $19 million per year. This deal makes Ferguson the seventh-highest-paid player at his position, in terms of average annual salary. — Jon Machota, Cowboys beat writer
