What happened in Liverpool? How parade horror unfolded — minute by minute
About a million people had lined the ten-mile route for Liverpool FC's victory parade and the four-hour event was just finishing at about 6pm on Monday. As the fans began to make their way home and continue their bank holiday celebrations, they were blissfully unaware of the havoc that was about to unfold. Dale Street The first footage available shows the dark grey Ford Galaxy people carrier on Dale Street near the Aloft hotel, revving as supporters throng the street. The driver's reversing light comes on and the car jolts backwards, narrowly avoiding members of the crowd, who let out a collective 'whoa'. A man dressed in black lands a punch on driver's side back panel and the car goes forward a few feet. Another man kicks off the back windscreen wiper before punching the window twice. Suddenly the car lurches backwards and the man is pushed back. The car shoots forward and the man picks something up before giving chase. • A different view Another video capturing almost the same moment but from the opposite side of the road records the crowd remonstrating with the man and a fan wrapped in a Liverpool flag grabbing the driver's door handle. The door opens but the driver slams it shut, putting his foot down on the accelerator and heading forward. Dale Street, opposite Riva hotel The driver has his left hand pressing the car's horn and continues along the road, his back window has been smashed in and he heads past the smoke of a red flare. 18 Water Street, opposite Hooters bar The car has driven about 100 metres from the previous video and is now in the middle of the crowd, having overtaken an ambulance. Someone smacks the windscreen and liquid is thrown at the vehicle. The car shoots off and a fan is thrown on to the bonnet and tossed into the air. The car slows and veers right into a crowd of people before speeding up. It comes to a stop in the middle of the road. The crowd surges towards the vehicle and shouts can be heard of 'kill him'. The car is surrounded and behind it lays a trail of destruction. Police rush to the car while fans stop to tend to the wounded. Immediate aftermath Fans are banging on the car and have opened the passenger door as police attempt to prevent them getting to the driver. The camera moves to the back of the car and tussles can be seen, with punches apparently being thrown. A police officer shouts: 'I don't know what's in there, get back.' A police officer sits down in the passenger seat. The camera turns to capture the devastation. A man is pushing a pram and an umbrella lies on the ground. Fans help as someone is being treated. A paramedic's bike lies on its side and it was reported that its owner was injured. A police officer is bent over someone lying prone and another man is treated beside the ambulance. Arrest A scene of chaos as a group of police officers stand in front of a yellow police van, the van's door quickly opens and someone is bundled inside before it shuts quickly again. An officer draws his baton to keep members of the crowd away. A member of the crowd is tussling with an officer on the ground before being sprayed in the face with a chemical irritant.
