Warwickshire fight back after Essex declaration

Rothesay County Championship Division One, Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Chelmsford (day two)Essex 602-6d: Westley 148, Allison 133, Pepper 107*, Walter 86; Malik 1-7Warwickshire 140-2: Davies 58, Mousley 54*; Critchley 2-48Essex (4 pt), Warwicks (1 pt)Match scorecard Dan Mousley lead the Warwickshire fightback to Essex's mammoth first-innings total with an innings that belied the gravity of the situation facing the visitors in their County Championship match at imposing right-hander clocked up only his third half-century of the season, but at a rate of more than a run-a-ball. It was in contrast to his more measured captain Alex Davies, who went along at half the rate in a second-innings stand of 86 that pulled Warwickshire back into the Davies departed for 52 from 116 balls, stumped by the alert Michael Pepper to give Matt Critchley a second wicket of the innings, Mousley was still there at the end with 54 from 53 balls and Warwickshire had been a chastening day and a half in the field for Warwickshire after Davies put Essex in. The home side rattled up 602-5 declared on an unresponsive, green-tinged pitch. Along the way there were three Essex centurions, curiously all scoring their third three-figure scores of the season. Tom Westley's 134 was followed by Charlie Allison and Michael Pepper, who combined in a 38-over, sixth-wicket stand of 195, the largest partnership in an innings of large side of a mid-afternoon rain break, it was carnage as the pair sensed the impending declaration and went for broke. The declaration duly arrived when Allison departed after four hours, caught at deep mid-wicket for 133 from 202 balls. That left Pepper unbeaten on 107 from just 117 would not have escaped Warwickshire's notice that Allison was not even in the Essex XI announced at the toss, but was drafted in at short notice, without argument, when Simon Harmer dropped out for "personal reasons".Before his partnership with Pepper, Allison also put on 91 for the fifth wicket with Westley. 57 of them in the morning. Westley added 24 to his overnight 124 before he was finally dismissed after a stay of more than six hours, caught at short fine leg turning Beau Webster off his legs. Significantly, the pair had carried Essex to a fourth batting point with four balls to had laced his 278-ball innings with 17 fours, a large portion of them driven elegantly through the covers. At the other end, Allison followed closely in Westley's footsteps, punching fours through the off-side, though also comfortable enough to reverse-sweep Corey Rocchiccioli for four. He reached his fifty from 85 balls when he turned the Australian off-spinner for a incoming Pepper did not hang about. He swept Rocchiccioli for an emphatic boundary to get off the mark and added four more with a late cut off Webster. The wicketkeeper-batsman went to lunch on 33, at which point he was presented with his county cap; little more than quarter-of-an-hour after the restart he had reached his half-century with a tap into the off-side off Rob his rate of scoring, Pepper was beaten to his hundred by Allison, who helped a wayward legside delivery from Mousley for his 14th boundary. After a 25-minute rain break, Pepper made it to his century, having taken just two hours and 15 minutes of improvised nudges and paddles. Two balls later he celebrated by driving Yates straight for six. Not long afterwards Warwickshire were put out of their found the Kookaburra ball just as unhelpful when Warwickshire set out with the initial target of 453 to avoid following on. Yates and Davies made a competent start, passing 50 in 21 overs, Davies hammering Jamie Porter for successive boundaries before Matt Critchley made the breakthrough. Given the rare opportunity to take the main spin-bowling role in Harmer's absence, Critchley had Yates retreating on to the backfoot and lbw to one that turned and reared brought Critchley down to earth when he slammed him straight back down the ground for six and reached his fifty from 46 balls. Zen Malik and Beau Webster impress as Warwickshire see off Worcestershire

Zen Malik and Beau Webster both scored centuries as Warwickshire chased down 393 – the third-highest target in their history – to beat Worcestershire by five wickets in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship. Needing 338 with eight wickets in hand at the start of the day Malik scored a career-best 142 with Australian Webster hitting an unbeaten 100 off 166 balls. Dan Mousley chipped in with 69 before Kai Smith (48 off 40) joined Webster to see the hosts home with almost 14 overs to spare to leave bottom side Worcestershire staring at relegation. Essex inflicted Sussex's first championship defeat at Hove since May 2022 after wrapping up only their second victory of the season inside 25 minutes on the final day. The home side began play needing another 55 just to make Essex bat again and while James Coles got the single he needed for his third consecutive century there was little else to cheer as they were bowled out for 261 to lose by an innings and 39 runs. Top two Surrey and Nottinghamshire both had to settle for draws, at Yorkshire and Hampshire respectively. Dom Bess, captaining Yorkshire in the absence of Jonny Bairstow after partner Megan went into labour in the early hours, finished with seven for 162 as the visitors were bowled out for 537 at Scarborough, a first innings lead of just 20. Yorkshire were 120 for five when time was called and slipped into the bottom two after the draw. Nottinghamshire are just a point behind the leaders after Felix Organ scored a first-class high of 122 not out to ensure Hampshire avoided the follow-on. The hosts finished on 454 all out, 124 behind, and that just left Nottinghamshire duo Haseeb Hameed and Freddie McCann to score unbeaten half-centuries on their way to 108 for one before the end. A draw leaves Hampshire 13 points above Yorkshire. Division Two leaders Leicestershire strengthened their promotion push with a 189-run victory over Derbyshire at Derby. England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed finished with seven for 93, and 13 wickets in the match, as the hosts were dismissed for 256. Second-placed Glamorgan kept up the chase with a five-wicket win at home to struggling Kent after Kiran Carlson scored an unbeaten 89 in a successful pursuit of 189, the hosts knocking off the remaining 164 required for the loss of only three further wickets. England spinner Tom Hartley claimed five for 99 – and match figures of 11 for 215 – as Lancashire beat Gloucestershire by nine wickets with five overs to spare at Cheltenham. Following-on at 98 without loss Hartley took advantage of a helpful pitch to leave the visitors needing 110 from 26 overs and an unbeaten second-wicket stand of 103 between Keaton Jennings (57no) and Josh Bohannon saw them home. Middlesex boosted their hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon with an innings and 107-run victory over Northamptonshire. The visitors began the day 64 for three following-on and despite battling Rob Keogh's unbeaten 61 made in nine minutes short of five hours they could not stave off defeat.
