Rylan Clark reveals he felt like a 'failure' following the breakdown of his marriage as he reflects on split with ex-husband Dan Neal
has reflected on the emotional turmoil he faced following his split from former husband Dan Neal. The TV presenter, 36, split with Dan in 2021 after six years of marriage when Rylan admitted he cheated on him. Now, four years on, he has spoken candidly about the devastating period that followed. Speaking on the latest episode of his podcast How to Be... with Strictly's Tasha Ghouri, Rylan admitted he 'felt like a failure' when his relationship came to an end. He said: 'When I went through my divorce, I had a full-on breakdown because it wasn't just us. 'It felt like it wasn't just us, even though it was just me and my ex. I felt that everyone's going to think this of me.' He admitted: 'Everyone's going to think, 'Oh look, his life isn't perfect. Oh look, he's failed like that.' I just felt like a failure.' While reflecting on the painful breakup, he acknowledged that parting ways was ultimately the 'right thing to happen.' It comes after Rylan opened up further about his relationship with Dan on his podcast with guest Stephen Fry. He said: 'We got married in 2015. That same year, yeah. So it would have been my 10 year anniversary this year.' Stephen then asked if Rylan felt any kind of responsibility to represent gay marriage, as one of the few LGBTQ+ celebrities. He asked: 'But did you feel also that - when it broke up and you were divorced – did you feel that there was in some sense you were letting down the idea of gay marriage, because we have a duty to show that our marriages are as robust and strong as any heterosexual?' Rylan said: 'There was part of me that just felt like a complete and utter failure. I felt like I'd failed personally, but I felt like I'd found publicly on behalf of - the gays! You know, I'm not, I'm not 'head gay', it's not that.' Stephen reassured: 'No, you're not, exactly. You're not a poster child for gayness.' Rylan continued: 'But you do feel like, yeah I'm going to get married, I want to get married, I can get married. 'But when it doesn't work out you don't want people to go, 'you see that's why they f****** shouldn't get married'.' Stephen was quick to insist: 'You can get married again if you want…', causing Rylan to hint at his divorce struggles as he quipped: 'Yeah with a prenup this time, I'm not going through that again.' Rylan previously revealed his own infidelity during his marriage with Dan caused the downfall of their relationship. After he revealed that he had been unfaithful, Dan eventually ended the relationship after the heart-wrenching confession. Following the heartbreak and the deterioration of his marriage, Rylan had suicidal thoughts and his weight dropped to just nine stone. He opened up about these challenging times in his second autobiography, TEN: The Decade That Changed My Future. In the book, he penned a candid reflection and said: 'I got in a relationship quite young and just went with it. Now I know I'm my own person. I'm not going to settle for something that's not right. In a way it's been a bit of a gift.' 'I'm happy to have sex with someone and that's that, that's not a problem. But do I want more? Of course I want more. Am I going to enjoy myself on the way? Abso-f***ing-lutely.'

On what he's looking for in a partner, the star explained: 'I want two things out of someone. One is that you make me laugh and don't make me cry. 'And the other one is when I walk in to the house, or you walk into the house, you ask me or I ask you, 'how was your day?'' Rylan went on to open up about his behaviour when he's single, revealing: 'For the past few years, I have been on my own, in the sense of living on my own, which is something I've never done in my entire life. 'But I have got to the point where I've got my 'SSB', my Secret Single Behaviour, where I might talk to the coffee machine in the morning and go, 'of course you want me to empty the drip trays!' 'You know, it winds me up, but I will say it out loud. Some people might think I'm unwell. 'I'm not, it's my Secret Single Behaviour.' Since his divorce, Rylan has been open about his dating life, or rather, the lack thereof, and has revealed that he has been on only two dates in the past two years. As for the reason for that, he said 'there is a bit of an issue' with dating in the digital age. He explained: 'nowadays it's all digital, and I find myself falling into this trap of talking to people, never meeting them'. Asked if the perfect person exists, Philippa replied: 'No, they do not exist. What there is, is good raw material'. Rylan Clark emotionally shared a heartbreaking divorce confession at the BAFTA TV Awards after he scooped a win with Robert Rinder. The former X Factor star, 36, and barrister, 46, took home the Factual Entertainment prize for their show Rob And Rylan's Grand Tour. After accepting the award, Rylan, who split with his ex-husband Dan Neal in 2021 after six years of marriage, spoke candidly about what the show meant to him. He admitted he 'wasn't fully over' the break-up and his travels around Italy with Robert and the hit BBC programme became a 'therapy' for him. 'For me, the show, it happened at a really weird time for me like I still wasn't fully over sort of the breakdown of my marriage and was flung with the judge,' Rylan confessed while he clutched his BAFTA award. He added: 'It was the best therapy I needed, put it that way.' After accepting the award, Rylan, who split with his ex-husband Dan Neal (right) in 2021 after six years of marriage, spoke candidly about what the show meant to him 'I think the journey, and I hate that word in telly but its so true, when you watch our series, that journey from when we meet to sort of how raw especially I was at that time,' Rylan divulged. He described how it felt like 'being an adolescent again and starting again but with cameras there'. Rylan and Robert captured the nation's heart with their fun-filled, historic adventures around some of Italy's most cultural cities during the first season of their show. The TV personality hinted about the contents of the upcoming second series and said: 'We are not fully healed and so we went to India. We didn't think we would be able to top the Italy show but it is incredible.' Rylan competed on ITV's singing talent show, The X Factor, back in 2012 and went on to have a successful TV career. He reflected: 'Just because I finished fifth on X Factor, I should have been forgotten about by February after I had done all the gay clubs. 'You can take a different route. Slap that indicator on and go into the left lane, and it's taken me somewhere else. 'I think that's what the show showed. If you don't try these new things and do it, then you are just going to stay standing still. 'I think the little Rylan on X Factor did alright in the end.' Rylan competed on ITV's singing talent show, The X Factor, back in 2012 and went on to have a successful TV career Rylan and Robert forged a close friendship after sharing a divorce lawyer and through filming their BBC travel show.
