Syabu: Jail, rotan for retired army
Published on: Thursday, May 22, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 22, 2025 By: Cynthia D Baga Text Size: The offence under Section 39C (1) (b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail term of between five and seven years and whipping, on conviction. Kota Kinabalu: A 37-year-old retired army from Kedah was jailed five years and ordered given a stroke of cane for taking syabu for the third time. Mohd Ikmal Amir pleaded guilty before Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan, to the charge against him on Wednesday. Mohd Ikmal repeatedly took the drugs at 9am on Jan 21, this year after his urine tested positive for drugs at the Papar police station and he has two previous conviction records for drugs. The offence under Section 39C (1) (b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a jail term of between five and seven years and whipping, on conviction. The court ordered the accused to serve the jail sentence from the date of his arrest. After completing his jail sentence, Mohd Ikmal was ordered to be placed under police supervision for three years. Advertisement Before meting out the punishment, the court advised Mohd Ikmal not to repeat the offence in future. The judge hoped that the punishment would also set as a reminder or deter not only Mohd Ikmal but also the public at large from taking syabu. In mitigation, Mohd Ikmal, who was unrepresented, asked for leniency and requested the jail term to be served in Sungai Buloh as he did not have any family member in Sabah. He told the court that he stayed with the drug addicts and was influenced to take drugs. Mohd Ikmal, who never not married, also claimed that he had promised to his mother that he would return home once he becomes a successful person but cannot do so as he did not have money. The prosecution urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as Mohd Ikmal was a habitual offender. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM87,000 syabu intercepted in Tawau
Published on: Wednesday, May 21, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 21, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Jasmin (centre) showing the syabu seized at the Tawau Airport. TAWAU: A syndicate's attempt to smuggle methamphetamine (syabu) worth RM87,000 for the local market via commercial flights was foiled after authorities intercepted the drugs at Tawau Airport on Saturday. Two men were arrested - the first a 44-year-old man from Perak and the second a 21-year-old from Sarawak. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police recovered about 2.5kg of syabu following inspections and interrogations of both suspects. 'We suspect they tried to deceive authorities by arriving separately on different flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The first suspect was detained at 9.25pm, while the second was arrested about 50 minutes later,' he told a press conference at the Tawau District Police Headquarters, Tuesday. Jasmin said a search on the first suspect led to the discovery of a commercial flight boarding pass and a vacuum-sealed cylinder suspected of being used to pack drug-filled plastic. Inspection on the second suspect's luggage uncovered syabu hidden inside a biscuit box, instant noodle packaging and food-mixing materials. Advertisement 'We also confiscated three smartphones, two luggage bags (red and black), a vacuum-sealed cylinder and a water bottle from both suspects for further investigation,' he said. Jasmin said the first suspect had two prior cases under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 and two cases under Section 15(1) of the same Act. A urine test found the suspect positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine. 'The second suspect tested negative but has a past record under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and Section 420 of the Penal Code (wanted),' he said. Jasmin believes a drug syndicate orchestrated the suspects' movements, given their separate arrivals and the method of concealing the drugs. He noted that similar modus operandi are commonly used by experienced drug syndicates and police are working to track down others involved. 'Based on past cases, drug syndicates not only prefer smuggling syabu into Tawau via land and sea but also through airports (air routes),' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? [UPDATED] 10.5pct drop in drug addicts due to Kelantan 'rat route' closures
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia has recorded a 10.5 per cent decrease in the number of drug addicts in the first quarter of this year, primarily driven by a decline in Kelantan. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that this reduction followed government efforts to close illegal entry points in four states, including Kelantan, which were previously identified as major routes for drug smuggling. As of March 2025, a total of 108,409 drug addicts and substance abusers have been detected nationwide, with 60 per cent of the cases involving new addicts. "This marks a 10.5 per cent decrease compared to 121,170 cases recorded during the same period in 2024. The drop can be attributed to the decline in numbers in Kelantan, which is closely linked to our efforts to shut down illegal entry points — one of the main contributors to the influx of drugs," he said. He said that when the government launched enforcement operations, it also intensified awareness programmes. "The data shows that four states near the border — Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, and Kedah — are most affected. We have increased police operations, tightened border controls, and conducted more awareness talks. "As a result, we are seeing a decline. However, it's still too early to draw definitive conclusions. According to National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) director-general Datuk Ruslin Juson, we need to observe the second and third quarters to gain a clearer picture," he added. Saifuddin has set a new target of limiting the number of new drug users to 60,000. Based on manual analysis by Nada, he said the districts with the highest number of drug-related cases, included Pendang, Kuala Krai, Pasir Putih, and Tanah Merah. He said that individuals involved in drugs were often prone to committing other crimes. "From 395,000 raw data entries we receive every month through police reports, analysis reveals that if someone is already involved under Section 15(1)(b) of the Dangerous Drugs Act — drug use — they are likely to be involved in up to 28 other types of crimes. If they are involved in minor drug possession under Section 12(2) of the same Act, they have the potential to commit up to 11 other crimes," he said. Saifuddin also announced a collaboration between Nada and the National Geospatial Centre to develop an application for drug profiling.
