Riders' Wiebe hopes maximum effort nails down roster spot
The Riders are preparing for one more pre-season test before the 2025 regular season kicks off. The Riders are preparing for one more pre-season test before the 2025 regular season kicks off. Former University of Saskatchewan Husky receiver Daniel Wiebe may be a late-round rookie, the Riders took him in the eighth round, but Wiebe is determined to standout and add to the stable of Canadian talent in the Riders' receiver room. 'All I can really control is my effort,' said Wiebe. 'That's giving 100 per cent every play, whether that play goes my way or not, it's kind of out of my control. So, just really what I'm trying to focus on is giving my best every play and every moment too, learning the playbook as much as I can.' Riders' starting quarterback Trevor Harris has been impressed with the rookie so far in training camp and knows that the receiver position is fierce in terms of competing for roster spots this season. 'Wiebe's just been making plays and doing all the right things in training camp, so you root for all of the guys and you kind of just be the best teammate you can and hope for the best for them,' said Harris. In 2024, Wiebe had a breakout season in his fourth year with the University of Saskatchewan, posting 66 receptions for 923 yards and nine touchdowns. However, acclimating to the CFL game requires players to be quick on their feet, according to Wiebe. 'Everything happens a little bit faster right, so you have to be that much more dialed in all the time. Everyone is a little bit bigger too, so you have to make sure that you're kind of prepared for that as well. And it's a physical game out there, so you have to be ready to [be] physical on every play.' Wiebe is no stranger to playing at Mosaic Stadium, having done so each year he was a member of the Huskies. With the Riders' final preseason game just two days away, he is looking forward to wearing home colours for a change. 'It's crazy that it's even about to happen, so really just trying to stay in the moment and just do my best.' Friday will be the final audition for many prospective players, as final roster cuts are due for all CFL teams by 10 p.m. on Saturday. The Riders open the 2025 regular season June 5 at home against Ottawa.

‘Like I came home': Sask. Roughriders veterans join rookies in training camp
The Saskatchewan Roughriders are back in action, as training camp continues. The first few days were exclusively focused on the rookies, and head coach Corey Mace says once the veteran players hit the field, it showed lots of promise for the 2025 season. 'I told the rookies they had a great camp, that things are going to pick up pretty fast here when the vets came in. And I think they saw that today. So, just for them, the speed of the game, the speed of processing, it was just good, I think, from their experience to see that and what it looks like to be around guys who've done it for a while,' Mace said. This certainly proved true for rookie receiver Daniel Wiebe, a Saskatchewan-born athlete who recently joined the team. 'It's great to be around these guys. They're pro players, they know how to do it. They know how to get the job done. So, [I'm] just trying to learn as much as I can from these guys,' Wiebe said. Wiebe is no stranger to green and white, thanks to his time with the U of S Huskies. Riders training camp is hosted on the Huskies' home field at Griffiths Stadium, which Wiebe described as a full-circle experience. 'It's an amazing feeling, especially being at home with the Riders. I've dreamed of playing with the Riders since I was a kid. So, it's a blessing for sure.' Coach Mace says the rookie has had an impressive week so far. 'He's a confident kid, man, and he knows exactly what it means to be a pro. And it's really special that he's putting on the green and white,' Mace said. While the rookies are finding their footing among the team, several vets shared that they're also thrilled to be back on the turf. 'This is the first time since 2018 I felt like I came home. Stepping into this province, stepping in with these guys, with the coaches and whatnot, I felt like I came home, and I think a lot of guys kind of have that same sentiment,' quarterback Trevor Harris said. Trevor Harris signed a year-long extension during the offseason. While the 38-year-old quarterback battled two knee injuries in the last season, he says thanks to lots of offseason work, his 'knee feels brand new.' Mace also echoes confidence in his quarterback. 'Trevor is a worker... Whether it was rehab or just attacking his offseason, that guy is a worker, and he's probably one of the best on the team. I'm just excited to see him come out here and lead like he has been doing,' Mace said. The 2024 season left the Riders with a 9-8-1 record, and Harris says his confidence in the team's ability to build off of that. 'We got to take the training wheels off toward the end of the year. Now, I think we could be riding some mopeds and some motorcycles by the end of the year,' Harris said with a laugh. Both Mace and Harris shared that the team has remained consistent, and they're building towards big goals in the 2025 season. 'There's no complacency in this group. That's what we love about it... This group is just ready to get going,' Mace said. 'A lot of people talk about continuity, and for very good reason. But I think you have to ask yourself with continuity, have you reached a ceiling? Have we tapped out who we are? And we're not even close to that,' Harris said.

Sask. players look to make an impression at Roughriders rookie camp
Social Sharing Some local talent had their first taste of pro football Wednesday morning as the Saskatchewan Roughriders opened rookie camp. Receiver Daniel Wiebe, who was chosen in the eighth round by the Riders in last week's CFL draft, grew up watching the Green and White. The University of Saskatchewan Huskies product said putting on a Riders uniform for the first time brought a jumble of emotions. "It's kind of surreal," he said. "Just seeing Riders jerseys beside me, I'm like, 'Holy, I'm really here doing it right now.'" Wiebe's Huskies teammate, Seth Hundeby, is also in camp. Hundeby has committed to return to the U of S for one more year, but is trying to soak in as much knowledge as possible during his time at training camp. "Be a sponge, you know — anything anyone says … take it in and then kind of incorporate it in wherever you feel like you can," said Hundeby, who the Riders chose in the fourth round of the draft. "It's really cool to, like, be a part of the team because eventually, if the opportunity is there, I'd love to play and be a Rider." Riders head coach Corey Mace said the two made an impression on the first day. "Seth's one of the most vocal guys already, and he's only had a day and half in the playbook," Mace said. "He's out there commanding. So that's awesome to see." As for Wiebe, Mace said he's turned heads with his speed. "[It's] showed up even in the special teams drills," Mace said. "He goes to return a kick and guys are trying to make sure he doesn't get outside, and quickly find out how quick and how fast he is." Wiebe, who led the Huskies in catches last season, said he's willing to play anywhere on the field. "My mindset is just wherever they need me, I'll play," he said. "I don't care where that is. I'll do my best in whatever position they put me out in." Two players from the Canadian Junior Football League's Saskatoon Hilltops have also been invited to camp — defensive lineman Johnathon Stevens and defensive back Dalton Urban. Stevens grew up in Eatonia, Sask., and is happy to get an opportunity to suit up at training camp. "I've watched the Riders since I was a little kid, and they made me want to play football," Stevens said. "The fact that I get a chance to go to the tryout and see the competition is truly a blessing and a childhood dream." Huskies QB Anton Amundrud will be in camp on Sunday as part of the CFL quarterback internship program. Rookie camp runs Thursday and Friday, from 9 a.m. until noon, at Griffiths Stadium. The Riders' main camp begins on Sunday.
