Penge holds his nerve to beat Hojgaard in Danish duel

English golfer Marco Penge tapped in for a birdie at the 18th hole to win the Danish Golf Championship by a stroke from Rasmus Hojgaard, who missed a chance to climb into the automatic qualifying positions for Europe's Ryder Cup team. Hojgaard looked on course for the title in his home country when he powered into a four-shot lead midway through his front nine, only to drop four strokes in four holes from No.10 and allow Penge to take the lead. Penge walked down the par-5 18th with a two-shot cushion over Hojgaard in the final pairing, but saw his partner roll in an eagle putt from 10 feet to the delight of the crowd at Furesø Golf Klub in Copenhagen. The 97th-ranked Penge needed to hole a birdie putt from three feet for the win and he held his nerve to shoot four-under-par 67, finish on 16 under for the week and seal a second European tour title. Both victories have come this year, with the first at the Hainan Classic in April. Hojgaard (69) was the runner-up and will remain outside the six automatic qualifying spots, just behind No.6 Sepp Straka, in the race to get into Europe's team for the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next month. Australia's Elvis Smylie carded an impressive final round 68 to finish nine under and in a share of sixth place, seven shots adrift of the winner. Compatriot Jason Scrivener was three shots further back after a closing-round 71. There is one qualifying event left for both players next week. Hojgaard will play at the British Masters on the European tour and Straka is scheduled to play on the PGA Tour at the Tour Championship, which offers more qualifying points. Penge pings Hojgaard to claim Danish Championship title

Marco Penge capitalised on Rasmus Hojgaard's remarkable mid-round collapse to clinch his second DP World Tour title at the Danish Golf Championship. Hojgaard looked set to breeze to his second victory in this event in three years when he opened up a four-shot lead by the sixth hole. However Penge, who birdied the third and eighth, was in a share of the lead after the Dane dropped a shot at the seventh and double bogeyed at the ninth. The Englishman moved ahead when Hojgaard bogeyed the 10th and extended his lead to two with a brilliant birdie at the 13th. Penge left the door ajar with his only bogey of the day at the 16th, but instantly responded with a birdie at the penultimate hole to restore his two-shot advantage at 15 under. Hojgaard piled on the pressure with a clutch eagle at the par-five last to draw level, but Penge kept his cool to drain his birdie putt and triumph at Fureso Golf Klub. "I've been playing so well this year," Penge said. "You know, coming back from my time off, to have won so soon (after that) and to achieve what I've achieved since I won. "My main goal after I won was to not get complacent and drop off basically. My team have been a massive support for me, my family, everyone involved really. "It's made me keep striving for more and this is amazing. And Rasmus, he's some player, to hit the shot he hit into the last and make eagle and basically make me have to win it was unbelievable." Ben Schmidt, who hails from Rotherham, parred the 72nd hole to earn solo third at 12 under following a final-round 68. Penge had two more reasons to celebrate in Copenhagen after his success saw him top the Closing Swing rankings, earning US$200,000 and entry to the final nine events of the DP World Tour campaign, in addition to claiming the US$10,000 on offer for setting the course round of 64 during his first round. Ireland's Conor Purcell carded a final-round 68 to finish one-under-par overall, good enough for a tie for 34th place.
