Campaigner rescues teenager from Itchen Bridge dressed as cone

A suicide prevention campaigner has rescued a girl from the top of the Itchen Bridge. Danny Carter, 35, was on the bridge as part of a suicide prevention campaign. Shortly after 5pm today a girl was seen climbing onto the railings of the bridge before the celebrity hairstylist sprinted across the road and bear hugged the teen, pulling her to safety. READ MORE: Hampshire police arrived at the scene moments later and the 17-year-old was taken to police custody. Speaking to the Echo moments after the heroic rescue, Danny said: "I was walking up to do the awareness just literally this evening for fun. "It was to try and raise some awareness, have a little bit of a laugh to say thank you for everything that [supporters] have done. "I'm walking up and I see in my distance someone walking backwards and forwards. "With that kind of walk, you know they're thinking so I intervene, I run across and as I've got not even half way across this road, she's got on top of the railings. "I just bear hugged her to the ground — and I'm dressed as a traffic cone. "It's every day and this is why I've said for the last fortnight, the patrols need to be here. "It upsets me to see that a young girl of 17 thought that was her only way out. READ MORE: Itchen Bridge lined with suicide prevention campaigners "All it takes is two people to patrol this bridge rather than two people patrolling the city centre looking for fag butts on the floor. "It's horrific. I'm so sorry, it was meant to be fun." Danny is in the process of raising money on GoFundMe, where he hopes to open a mobile coffee shop created out of a renovated shipping container, called Coffee Mate, beside the Itchen Bridge where people will have access to drink and snacks and a warm place to sit. He added: "I want to get as much awareness as possible that we need this her. Today we have reached our £5,000 target." Contact Jo@ or call 116 123 for support

Wishaw man Danny encourages locals to zip slide over River Clyde for Maggie's Lanarkshire

The event at the Riverside Museum, running from 9am to 3pm, will feature many inspiring centre visitors from Maggie's Lanarkshire and Forth Valley. A Wishaw man is one of several Lanarkshire locals encouraging daredevils the zip slide over the River Clyde for Maggie's Lanarkshire. ‌ On Saturday, August 30, supporters at Maggie's cancer charity are taking part in the incredible Zip Slide the Clyde event, soaring 100ft high and 1245ft along Glasgow's iconic cityscape to raise money for their centres in Lanarkshire and Forth Valley. ‌ The event at the Riverside Museum, running from 9am to 3pm, will feature many inspiring centre visitors from Maggie's Lanarkshire and Forth Valley. ‌ One centre visitor from Maggie's Lanarkshire, 63-year-old Danny King, has been promoting the event within his local area of Wishaw. Danny said he is proud to support Maggie's and is an advocate for the centre in Lanarkshire. ‌ He said: 'They (Maggie's) are helpful to those who are going through a cancer journey, and you are made to feel part of the wider Maggie's family. 'As soon as you enter you are met with kind people who go out of their way to support, comfort, and direct you to the appropriate help that you require.' Danny is an incredible supporter of Maggie's Lanarkshire, raising money through his festive dress up as Santa Clause at Christmas events in the Lanarkshire area. ‌ This year, he has continued his efforts to find ways to fundraise for Maggie's Lanarkshire throughout the year and has been named Lanarkshire's 'Summer Santa' by Centre Fundraising Organiser, Kerry-Anne Lang. Danny has previously participated in a Zip Slide event when he was 16 years old, stating that he 'really enjoyed it' and telling those who are considering taking part 'to go for it, it's for a great cause'. Centre visitor Laura McCourt, 41, from South Lanarkshire has also decided to take part in the Zip Slide the Clyde event in honour of her Mum and to support Maggie's Lanarkshire. ‌ Despite her fear of heights, Laura is determined to complete the Zip Slide the Clyde challenge. She said 'I'm certainly not someone who likes to live outside my comfort zone, that's for sure! But when I saw the call for Zip Slide volunteers, I knew it was the perfect way to say a huge 'thank you' to Maggie's for the incredible support they've given me.' In August 2024, following what they thought was a routine scan for a minor pain, Laura's mum was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer - completely symptomless until then. ‌ Laura said that she had tried to cope with the news of her mum's diagnosis on her own, but her best friend urged and pushed her to go to Maggie's Lanarkshire for support. She added: 'I was met with nothing but kindness. I spoke with a nurse specialist who listened, offered reassurance, and made me feel less alone. ‌ 'I've been having regular therapy sessions with one of their specialist psychologists ever since, helping me to process what's happening and slowly build a sense of calm again.' Since Maggie's opened its first centre in 1996, the charity has developed a programme of support that is proven to help people with cancer, as well as family and friends, take back control. Maggie's professional staff include psychologists, cancer support specialists and benefits advisors. ‌ Lorrie Cameron, Centre Head at Maggie's Lanarkshire said: 'Maggie's relies entirely on voluntary donations from individuals and the local community to enable our professional team to provide specialist cancer support, psychological support and benefits advice for everyone who needs it.' If you have any questions about the zip slide event, get in touch with the team at Maggie's Lanarkshire. The spaces are filling up quickly, with a limited number remaining. Woman who lost astonishing 22 STONE without weight loss jabs reveals why she's not embarrassed about her saggy skin in swimsuits

An Instagram weight-loss guru who shed an astonishing 22 stone has revealed why she's proud to wear a swimsuit this summer—despite being left with dramatic amounts of excess skin after her transformation. Lexi Reed, 34, who lives in Indiana with her husband Danny, gained 1.2 million followers on her Instagram account @fatgirlfedup after sharing her journey. In a recent interview, she said that although she's now 'covered in loose skin', she refuses to hide her body—and wears her swimsuit with pride. Lexi lost the weight after tipping the scales at 34st 9lbs. Even after undergoing skin removal surgery in 2018, a significant amount of loose skin remained. Her legs are also marked by varicose veins, scars and firm white or yellow bumps caused by a rare, potentially life-threatening condition called calciphylaxis. The illness, which prevents her from swimming—something she once loved—causes deposits to build up in blood vessels, leading to clots, ulcers and in some cases, death. But Lexi said: 'All those things tell a story of the battles I've faced and won.' She added that at her heaviest, when she felt like 'a prisoner in my own body', she wasn't worried about loose skin—she was worried she wouldn't live to see her 30th birthday. It wasn't until 2016 that she began her dramatic weight-loss transformation, prompted by a friend who challenged her to 30 days of exercise, along with no takeaways, alcohol, soda or cheat meals. The challenge proved to be the motivation she needed. Within the first month— without the help of weight-loss jabs—she lost more than a stone (23lbs), and went on to shed the rest over the following two years. 'I lost all my weight with diet and exercise,' Ms Reed said. 'No meal plan, no trainer, no surgery and no medication. '[I'm] fighting for my health and this new healthy lifestyle daily because I never want to go back to being almost 500lbs. 'I love this body for all it's done for me and despite any skin or scars, I'm just so grateful to be healthy, happy and alive every single day.' Although she admits it's difficult not being able to swim, Ms Reed says she's simply 'making the best' of her situation. In a recent Instagram post, that has received over 19,000 likes, she said: 'My journey hasn't been easy, but I'm so grateful every day to still be here fighting to be the best version of me. 'I'm grateful to still be alive despite any scar, skin, or calcium that I've been left with & I'll take fighting this one wound any day over 30!' The comment section was flooded with supportive comments from social media users praising her body positivity. One user wrote: 'Wow you heroin!!! I love that you love your body because you have survived.' A second user commented: 'I applaud you and am so proud of you for making yourself vulnerable and educating people.' Meanwhile another user wrote: 'I also had calciphylaxis on both sides of my legs. That was the most excruciating pain I have ever felt in my life.' In a supportive comment, her husband also wrote: 'I'll never forget when the doctor came in and diagnosed you with this disease, and all of the emotions that we felt.
