Dario Franchitti on the horror crash that almost killed him

Sign Up Motor racing star Dario Franchitti revealed his doctors joked he was like Humpty Dumpty as they fought to put him back together again after the horror crash which almost killed him. The Bathgate-born legend, known worldwide for his quadruple IndyCar championship wins and three victories at the Indianapolis 500, remembers nothing from the crash 12 years ago in Houston. He said: 'I was really lucky that I had a team of IndyCar doctors – Terry Trammell and Steve Olvey. 'I was their Humpty Dumpty, and they put me back together a number of times. Getting injured is an occupational hazard in motorsports. 'But last time, I knew something was very wrong. I don't remember anything about the accident, but I do remember the look on their faces. Instead of the usual 'if you do this, this and this' I could see from their faces that their attitude had changed to 'mmm, we'll see', so I knew I was in big trouble.' One of the last things Dario remembers is attending a friend's wedding three weeks before the accident. He said: 'A few tiny bits have come back from the actual day. I was in the pick-up truck ready to do the parade lap and the driver shut the window on my hand. I remember my fingers were in the bloody door. 'I remember the little earpieces you wear which have G-sensors in them to measure how hard you hit your head if you crash. They had come disconnected. It was hitting me in the armpit, and it was annoying me in the car. 'I remember flying in a wee hospital plane, but the best part of that month has just gone.' The racing hero, who was inducted into the Scottish Sporting Hall of fame two years ago, admits he had 'tricked' the doctors several times over just how quickly he recovered in the past just so he could keep racing. But his last accident not only cost Dario his career, it also almost cost him his life. He said: 'I tricked them when I broke my pelvis. I was back in the car three weeks later. When I broke my back on the motorbike in 2003, I raced the following week.' But the 100mph Houston accident has left him still struggling from the head injuries he suffered. On top of the memory loss, Dario, 52, still cannot walk properly when he gets up in the mornings. Unsurprisingly, he thinks about the accident every single day. Dario eventually retired from racing in 2013 after another accident. Today, Dario, who was awarded the MBE, helps train other drivers and commentates on the sport, but he still cannot bear to watch his own accidents on television. He said: 'I think I had actually retired before I watched the 2013 one. When I saw the actual shunt, it made me go 'urgh Jesus!' and I had to close my eyes. 'I wound it back and you can see the suspension of Takuma Sato's car breaking up. I still think about it every morning. 'Although I think about it, I'm massively grateful, every day, because I've lost some great friends in this sport. It's definitely a double-edged sword. I always had a healthy respect for what we did. 'I was a bit more risk averse when I was younger. As time went by, I did become less risk averse, and I was able to shut it out. Jackie Stewart would call that mind management.' Dario still loses words, and faces which were once recognisable can draw a blank. But he dismisses this as a 'minor inconvenience' compared to other drivers who have lost their lives in the world's most exciting but supremely dangerous sport. He said: 'I repeat myself and my decision making isn't as sharp as it once was. 'I forget words and people I've known I sometimes don't recognise. 'It can be embarrassing, but it beats the alternative. 'I could have died.' The driver opened up to fellow motorsport legend Jason Plato on the podcast Fuelling Around, powered by specialist motor insurer AdrianFlux, available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, AudioBoom and other outlets.

Mystery over iconic Glasgow pub as punters fear it has closed for good after decades

One of the city's nightlife moguls spoke about the issue BAR GONE? Mystery over iconic Glasgow pub as punters fear it has closed for good after decades Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A FAMOUS Glasgow bar is at the centre of a mystery as punters fear it has closed for good. Driftwood has been serving drinks at the end of Sauchiehall Street for nearly thirty years. The biggest clue came after Driftwood disappeared from social media. All of the bar's pages have been deleted from Facebook and Instagram. When our reporter went to the bar today, despite a sign on the door saying they would be open from 5pm until midnight, the pub appeared shut. It had a bike lock attached to door handles and there was no sign of life inside the venue. Speculation quickly spread about the bar's future. One person posted on a Facebook page for Glasgow bartenders: "What happened to Driftwood? Appears to be shut down." And Glasgow nightlife mogul Donald MacLeod, who owns the popular Cathouse and Garage nightclubs, also posted to his X account about the rumoured closure. He said: "This is desperately sad news. "I'm gutted for my friend and owner Dario, Nicola and their team, who for 28 years worked tirelessly to put this corner of Sauchiehall St and Charing Cross on the map and turn it into an iconic Glasgow Institution, only to see it torn away from them in the blink of an eye." 'One of my favourite pubs' cry locals as popular bar closes doors permanently after 40 years in business in 'end of era' And a post on the Cathouse's Facebook page read: "We are living in the decline of bars and venues and it never gets any easier seeing places disappear. "Our hearts go out to the staff who have been made redundant, and the customers that frequented over their 28 year reign in Glasgow." It comes as bars and restaurants across the country have been struggling. Owners have been hammered by rising costs in the aftermath of the pandemic, when lockdowns decimated their trade. Punters have also been forced to save their cash amid the cost of living crisis, which has seen hospitality footfall plummet. Businesses have also been paying more after National Insurance hikes brought in by the UK Government. The Scottish Government and council officials have also come under fire as bar and restaurant bosses accused them of failing to support Scotland's struggling hospitality sector. It comes as we told how another Sauchiehall Street venue closed down for good. Popular nightclub Mango has been forced to permanently close their doors. The owners of the three-level venue announced it has shut down due to the lease expiring this month. They hosted a "final farewell" party on Saturday, May 17.

Is Driftwood bar in Glasgow city centre shut for good?

Driftwood, a Sauchiehall Street institution since the late 1990s, has long been a fixture of Glasgow's nightlife. However, loyal customers have been left reeling after learning that the popular pub has reportedly shut down for good. Adding to the uncertainty, all of Driftwood's social media accounts appear to have been deleted, leaving regulars searching for answers. When the Glasgow Times searched for the social media channels, we were met with a message which stated that the page cannot be found. (Image: Newsquest) (Image: Newsquest) (Image: Newsquest) READ MORE: Prices for alcoholic drinks at TRNSMT 2025 have been revealed Known for its quirky concoctions and themed events, Driftwood earned a cult following for its Buckfast jelly bombs, Disney-inspired cocktails, and its infamous pie and bean pizzas. The venue was equally known for its buzzing atmosphere and loyal clientele. Social media has since been flooded with tributes and expressions of sadness from fans and former staff. Donald McLeod, owner of Glasgow venues Cathouse and The Garage, shared his disappointment online: 'This is desperately sad news. "I'm gutted for my friend and owner Dario, Nicola, and their team, who have worked tirelessly for 28 years to make this corner of Sauchiehall Street an iconic Glasgow institution—only to see it torn away from them in the blink of an eye.' Cathouse's official social media added: 'They said only two things would survive a nuclear attack—cockroaches and Driftwood. "We are living in the decline of bars and venues, and it never gets any easier seeing places disappear. "Our hearts go out to the staff who have been made redundant and the customers who frequented Driftwood during its 28-year reign in Glasgow.' Former staff have also shared their memories. One wrote on Facebook: 'I'm gutted to hear about this. "I worked there when it was Los Borrachos, from October 1999 to February 2001—my first bar job. I was there for a year and a half. Lots of memories.' The Glasgow Bartenders Club questioned the reasons behind the closure, while videos mourning the pub's potential end have been circulating widely on TikTok. One emotional clip read: 'Wasn't going to drink tonight, but Driftwood in Glasgow is closed and might not reopen, and their accounts are gone. My heart is broken.' Another simply asked: 'What do I do now that Driftwood is closed forever?' There was no sign on the door to indicate a closure, but the bar wasn't open (Image: Newsquest) The Glasgow Times visited the premises of Driftwood, and it appears closed with no signs indicating if it has shut for good or when it will be opening once again. As of now, no official statement has been released by the bar's owners, but with its digital presence wiped and industry insiders mourning its loss, the future of Driftwood remains uncertain. The Glasgow Times has approached Driftwood for comment.
