'A Fringe full of stars': Edmonton Fringe festival 2025 returns with a cosmic celebration
Article content The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival returns, celebrating the performers, attendees, and volunteers who make the festival possible. Article content The 44th edition of the Edmonton Fringe runs Aug. 14-24, featuring 221 indoor shows across more than 40 venues. The festival's opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday at ATB Park on the ATB stage, near 83 Avenue and 104 Street. The first Fringe performances begin at 8 p.m. the same evening. Article content Article content This year's theme is 'A Fringe full of stars,' a celestial theme that celebrates all the people who make Fringe such an enduring part of Edmonton's arts history. Article content 'When I tell you we got goosebumps when we decided on this theme, I'm not exaggerating,' said Megan Dart, executive director of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival. 'Whether you are on stage, backstage, volunteering in support of the festival, or coming out to support artists, everyone in the fringe constellation is a star.' Article content Dart said the best implementation of the celestial theme can be found at KidsFringe, which offers 'a great amount of creativity that is put into interpreting the theme.' KidsFringe is free to attend at Light Horse Park, and features craft stations, an adventure forest, and daily activities for kids to enjoy. Article content Keeping Fringe Sustainable Article content In 2024, the festival kicked off the 'Sustain Fringe' fundraising campaign, asking Edmontonians to help the festival raise $300,000 to maintain its scope and scale as it recovered from COVID lockdowns. They also sought generous residents willing to pledge a monthly donation of $5. Article content Article content The fundraiser was a huge success, and Dart said in the past year, the festival jumped from 34 monthly donors to more than 500. Article content Article content 'Because of them, we were able to return this year and continue delivering the Fringe experience that everyone knows and loves,' Dart says. Article content Despite the increase in monthly donations, Dart said organizers are still struggling to produce the Fringe at the level that Edmonton has come to expect. This year's event is only moderately larger than 2024, which featured 218 shows across 38 stages. Article content In the past year, the cost of producing the festival has increased by 8.5 per cent, and some amenities had to be cut or reduced. Article content The free Fringe shuttle, which previously transported attendees between the main Fringe area and Edmonton's French Quarter, near 89 Street and Whyte Avenue, is one such service that will no longer be running due to budget cuts.

Former NFL QB Makes Bold Jaxson Dart Call After Giants Debut
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Following his first performance of the NFL Preseason, New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart has been gaining a lot of support from fans and analysts based on what he put on display. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel broke down some film of Dart's debut and pointed to the promising signs the former Ole Miss star showed during his first set of action. "Watch Jaxson Dart right here, watch his left hand, check to this. Look at that, we didn't see that. That's what I'm talking about, he checked to it. He checked to this go route, a perfectly thrown football. That's what I'm talking about," Daniel said, reviewing Dart's first touchdown throw at the NFL level. "Big time," he continued. "Calling your own shot, getting smoked, throwing a freaking touchdown like this. Not a great rep by 63. Hey, sometimes, you know what? You're gonna get hit, get that ball out, you can't throw it any better than this. Okay, on the ground. Let's go! he checked to it!" More Bryan M. Bennett/Getty Images Dart's first touchdown throw, a 29-yard pass to the end zone to LJ Humphrey, was his only of the matchup against the Buffalo Bills last Saturday afternoon. He finished the game by completing 12 of his 19 passes for nearly 160 yards. Seeing Dart come in early, following the Giants' QB1 Russell Wilson, Daniel tosses out his bold opinion regarding the rookie. via @ChaseDaniel: THIS Is Why Jaxson Dart Should Start. Perfect THIS Is Why Jaxson Dart Should Start Dart checks to the go route in his first game ever while taking a massive hit. Perfect — Chase Daniel (@ChaseDaniel) August 11, 2025 As a first-round draft selection, Dart would typically get the nod to play on a team right away, being a high investment. But the Giants plan to compete for a playoff spot in 2025. Rolling out a rookie isn't in the plan for the time being. Instead, the Giants are going to bet on Russell Wilson. As the veteran wrapped up his lone season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson believes he can be a difference-maker in New York, offering much more stability than last year. While the chances of Dart getting regular-season reps aren't set at zero percent, he isn't expected to get any playing time beyond the preseason as of now. Dart's ability to get on the field when the games count will all depend on Wilson's performance. For more New York Giants and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Jaxson Dart gives ultimate compliment to Giants' OL: 'Never played in a pocket like this'
New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart's future success naturally hinges on the performance of the offensive line. You know, the line that has gotten poor pass protection grades the past several years. Pro Football Focus ranked the Giants' line 23rd overall out of 32 teams last year. They were stronger in the run blocking phase, with pass protection their biggest weakness. They allowed 48 sacks last season, the 11th highest in the league. Dart isn't buying into the narrative. He is confident the line can keep him safe. "I thought they've done a great job, a great job. If you look back at the last game, I don't know how many pass attempts that we had, but we didn't have one sack," he told reporters on Wednesday. "I sent a message to them after the game that I've never played in a pocket like this, so I thought that they've been able to compete at such a high level. "I think it's really unique just how close that they are, really from wherever they are on the depth chart. They're all together, they're all communicating, and it's been really cool to see. As a quarterback, when you're able to play behind that, it makes your job a lot easier. I thought that they've done a great job, and I know that they're going to continue to work and progress themselves as well." The Giants are operating this summer without star left tackle Andrew Thomas, who is on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he recovers from the Lisfranc injury that ended his season after six games last year. The left tackle position is being filled by veteran free agent James Hudson III and rookie Marcus Mbow. It's the interior of the line that has been a concern in pass protection. Injuries haven't helped. The team feels they have the versatility and depth to overcome those issues should they occur again this year. The Giants are hopeful that center John Michael Schmitz takes a huge step up in his third season. Left guard Jon Runyan Jr. is fully healthy after suffering multiple injuries last season. But it is Mbow that could be the key to improved offensive line play. He's already shown that he's NFL-ready and, even better, can play several positions. "He's level-headed for sure, and I think that that's one of his strengths, because as a rookie you're going to make mistakes, and there's a lot of learning that you have to do, and I think that it's kind of just shown his maturity," Dart said of fellow rookie Mbow. "He makes a mistake, he doesn't get flustered, he's able to come back and answer. He's been thrown into a lot of different situations, him starting with the threes and making jumps and playing with the ones. I thought that he's done a great job, and he's a guy that I felt coming to work each and every day, that he's really been consistent in his process of getting here early, doing extra, and I know that he's hungry, and he wants to do the best of what he does." With that attitude coming in from this rookie class, the Giants' future is trending upward.

Ex-NFL QB: Jaxson Dart should start for New York Giants
Following his impressive NFL debut against the Buffalo Bills last weekend, New York Giants rookie Jaxson Dart received a ton of praise, including being named a top rookie QB performer in the NFL's opening weekend of the preseason. Now, after just one outing, some believe that the Dart should be the Giants' starting quarterback as early as Week 1 of the regular season. Ex-NFL quarterback Chase Daniel is the latest on the Dart starting quarterback train. In the video posted by Daniel, he walks through the progression on Dart's first touchdown and highlights his decision-making. "Watch Jaxson Dart right here, watch his left hand -- check to this. Look at that, we didn't see that. That's what I'm talking about, he checked to it. He checked to this go route, a perfectly thrown football. That's what I'm talking about," Daniel said. "Big time, calling your own shot, getting smoked, throwing a freaking touchdown like this. Not a great rep by 63 [Jake Kubas] -- hey, sometimes, you know what? You're gonna get hit, get that ball out, you can't throw it any better than this. Okay, on the ground. Let's go -- he checked to it!" Head coach Brian Daboll has been adamant that Russell Wilson will be the Giants' starter when the season begins. However, the more Dart impresses in the preseason, the more noise the Giants will hear to go with the rookie from the jump. With the Giants' less-than-favorable schedule to start the season, it may only be a matter of time before we see Dart as the starter. One this is for sure, Darts' first game action performance has fans excited for what the future may hold with their rookie QB.
