Sixers' Daryl Morey reacts to No. 3 pick, gives insight into draft plans
The Philadelphia 76ers were able to have a silver lining in what was a miserable 2024-25 season. The Sixers were expected to contend for a championship led by their star trio of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, but instead they were decimated by injuries and it derailed any type of championship hopes. The Sixers had to then turn their attention elsewhere. They had to focus on the development of youngsters such as Justin Edwards, Adem Bona, Quentin Grimes, and see what they had in Guerschon Yabusele. It resulted in a tough season, but the Sixers now know they will be adding a top pick in what is expected to be a loaded draft class. Advertisement President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey hopped on "Kincade and Salciunas" on 97.5 The Fanatic as he gave his thoughts on the getting the No. 3 pick and a little insight into his draft plans: Morey on getting the No. 3 pick "Big. I think, 3, we feel very comfortable about that the player who'll be there. We're really excited and yeah, it was definitely a celebration day and a high drama day that all Philly fans and everyone in the front office and coaching staff went through." On if the Sixers will make a selection rather then trade the pick "That's the plan. I think to get a high upside player that we also think can contribute right away is a big deal and we feel like 3 is a great spot to be." On if free agency will affect his draft plans "Our free agency plans won't play into who we draft. We're going to go with the best player there which is why we're excited about how good the top of the draft is, and then we'll have to work around who we draft and free agency, but if you look at the history of the league, the mistakes are made when you don't just take the best player there and work around it." On if having too many guards will play into his plans if a guard is the best player available "We won't take that into account. If the best player's a guard, we'll take a guard there." On his confidence heading into the 2025-26 season "I think we know when Joel's healthy, he's a top 5 player in the league. We know Paul George is an elite All-Star level player when he's playing with a full complement of guys like a Tyrese. Tyrese is going to be going into, I think, it's his sixth season and he continues to progress. Especially, on the defensive end. Then, you add our rotation next year is pretty much going to be all 25, 26, 27 and younger, and we feel very good and all of them are going to be going into at least their second season except for the third pick. Generally, there's a pretty big jump as young players move into their second, third season so we're looking forward to where we'll be next year." On the future of Philadelphia's free agents "Obviously, it's their choice, but directionally, and I think they've even said it in some of their comments. I think (Andre) Drummond, (Kelly) Oubre (Jr.), and Eric (Gordon) will opt in (to their player options). Yabusele's an unrestricted free agent so we will look to re-sign him, but historically in the league, that tends to be a harder situation, but it would be awesome if we could get him back. Then, Grimes we feel good about. Obviously, he's a free agent as well, but we have the ability to match the deal so we're hoping to work something out with Grimes as well." Philadelphia 76ers free agency: Will Andre Drummond return on option?
The Philadelphia 76ers will be looking to move forward in the offseason after a miserable year in 2024-25 as injuries decimated the roster. The Sixers do have the No. 3 pick in their possession so that is what will be helpful for them as they look to bounce back. With that being said, one has to wonder what free agency will look like for Philadelphia. The Sixers have 11 free agents they have to take care of. The cap space will be a bit limited in 2025 after the big spending spree in 2024, so don't expect the Sixers to be major players in free agency, but they will be looking to keep a number of key free agents. Advertisement Up next in this free agency series is big man Andre Drummond who has expressed his desire to return for the 2025-26 season. Here is some details on Drummond's free agency: Drummond's free agency Free agency status: Player option for $5 million 2024-25 stats: 7.3 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 0.9 apg, 1.0 spg, 50% FG Prediction: Stays Reason for the prediction The Sixers do expect Drummond to return per President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey. The front office appears to expect the three players who have player options to exercise them and keep them around for the future. Either way, the big man is important to what Philadelphia wants to do. He provided the Sixers what they were looking for when he was available which was rebounding and solid production around the basket on the offensive end in the pick-and-roll game. With that being said, it was a bit of a down year for him in terms of rebounding. His 7.8 rebounds per game were well below his career average of 12.1. That can be attributed mostly to the toe injury that limited him in the 2025 portion of the year. Advertisement Drummond is an important piece in the locker room as well. One can always see him talking to the youngsters--specifically Adem Bona--giving them all advice on how to handle the NBA and the lessons he has learned along the way. There is a great benefit for having him on the roster both on the floor and in the locker room as a mentor.
