Mysuru man seeks to create awareness about dogs and birds for therapy

A man in Mysuru has trained dogs and birds as a means to use pet therapy to cope with anxiety, stress, depression, and loneliness. Benjamin Vas, a resident of Gokulam 3rd Stage in Mysuru, possesses trained therapy dogs and birds, which he claims had helped a large number of people to combat anxiety and ease tension and stress in their respective lives during the last 26 years. Addressing a press conference in Mysuru on Friday to create awareness about therapy with the help of dogs and birds, Mr. Vas said that his therapy dogs and birds were being used in elder-care centres, parks, and hospitals, and during International Yoga Days, and the Dasara festival in Mysuru to offer 'emotional support and peace of mind' to a large number of people. Citing studies, Mr. Vas said that petting dogs for just 5 to 10 minutes can significantly reduce anxiety levels and stress. Presently, Mr. Vas said he has three dogs — an Alaskan Husky, an English Cocker Spaniel, and a Labrador Retriever; and seven birds, including a Sun conure, a Green-cheeked conure, a Pineapple conure, and Australian budgerigars. Ever since he started training dogs for therapy, Mr. Vas said that a couple of them had died, and he replaced them with others, while also starting bird therapy about 20 years ago. Though he charges money to provide his therapy dogs and birds to heal ailing persons, Mr. Vas said he gives them for free to poor people. 'I charge money because the dogs and their maintenance is expensive,' he said. Mr. Vas, who earlier served as a priest at St. Philomena's Church, is also the founder-director of India Bible Literature Apostolate in Mysuru.

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah meets Defence Minister, seeks air show nod for Dasara, Defence corridor

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday to request that the annual air show be held during the upcoming Dasara festival and a defence corridor project be allocated for the state. "I met the defence minister and discussed three main issues," Siddaramaiah told reporters after the meeting. The chief minister said he discussed the holding of the air show that has become a signature event during Mysuru Dasara, celebrated in September-end. "We organise an air show every year during the Dasara festival. We requested the Centre to organise it again this year," he said. Siddaramaiah also demanded a defence corridor for Karnataka, like in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. He also sought defence land for the implementation of three key projects -- tunnel project, link road on the airport Bellary road and flyover double-decker road -- in the state. Live Events "He has agreed to the air show, while responding positively to other proposals," he said. The CM also mentioned that he plans to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi if he gets appointments. Siddaramaiah also plans to meet the Congress national general secretary in charge of the state, Randeep Surjewala , to discuss the filling of four vacant MLC posts and the appointment of members on the corporation boards.

CM Siddaramaiah and DyCM D.K. Shivakumar make a show of unity in Mysuru

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar demonstrated their unity by joining their hands and raising them in the presence of media at Mysuru airport on Monday (June 30, 2025). 'Aren't we together?' Mr. Siddaramaiah asked Mr. Shivakumar, who nodded his head in agreement, before the two leaders joined their hands and raised them. Mr. Siddaramaiah and Mr. Shivakumar were among a host of Ministers, including Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister for Animal Husbandry K. Venkatesh and Minister for Minor Irrigation N.S. Boseraju, present at the Mysuru airport before proceeding to the KRS reservoir to offer bagina. Countering allegations of dissent The show of solidarity was aimed at countering the Opposition BJP's allegations about differences between the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister and the speculation over a change of leadership in the State. Mr. Siddaramaiah made it clear that he and Mr. Shivakumar were on good terms, and any effort by the Opposition to drive a wedge between them will not bear fruit. Referring to Mr. Shivakumar's nickname 'bande' (rock/boulder), Mr. Siddaramaiah even said that the Congress government will remain as strong as a 'bande' for its full five-year term. Siddaramaiah slams BJP leaders He lashed out BJP leader Sriramulu for predicting the fall of the Congress government and conduct of mid-term polls. He questioned the political forecast of Mr. Sriramulu, who he said had lost elections to both the Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly. 'BJP leaders are liars,' he said. With his attention was drawn to Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka's prediction that he will be replaced by Dasara, Mr. Siddaramaiah made it clear that he will inaugurate the Dasara festival this year. With regard to All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Randeep Surjewala's visit to the State, Mr. Siddaramaiah said the Congress leader, who was in charge of the party affairs in Karnataka, will elicit opinion from the MLAs to strenghten the party organisation.

Speculation on leadership change in Karnataka surfaces again

The internal bickering in the Congress seems to be only increasing. The party, which is still smarting from the embarrassment caused by its legislators who spoke of a lack of development and alleged corruption in the Housing Department, found itself in the spotlight again as Ramanagara legislator H.A. Iqbal Hussain on Sunday reignited the issue of change of guard in the government. While Mr. Hussain, a close aide of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, indicated that Mr. Shivakumar could get the chance at becoming the Chief Minister in the next two to three months, Social Welfare Minister H.C. Mahadevappa, seen in the Chief Minister's inner circle, clarified that there was no confusion on the Chief Minister's position and that Mr. Siddaramaiah would complete the full term. 'I do not believe in rumours. We are confident that Mr. Shivakumar will get the opportunity (to become the Chief Minister),' Mr. Hussain told reporters in Ramanagara. When asked if Mr. Shivakumar would become the Chief Minister this year, he said: 'I am saying that the date given for a revolutionary political change (in September, by Cooperation Minister K.N. Rajanna) is the same. A decision would be arrived at in the next two to three months.' When his attention was drawn to Mr. Siddaramaiah's son Yathindra, a MLC, claiming that the change of leadership was only a speculation, the Ramanagara legislator said an agreement had been reached when the Chief Minister was chosen in 2023. 'Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge decided on it (Chief Minister's post). Everyone knows about it (rotation of tenure). We were all there in Delhi. At an appropriate time, the high command will take appropriate decision. We will have to wait and I am confident that he (Mr. Shivakumar) will be given the opportunity.' Mr. Hussain's comment is being seen as response to Mr. Rajanna's statement on a revolutionary political change in September — possibly hinting at change of KPCC president — last week, and his remarks are being viewed as hitting back at the Chief Minister's camp. In Mysuru, Dr. Mahadevappa claimed that there was no confusion over the post of the Chief Minister, and that Mr. Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the Dasara festival in September. He said Mr. Siddaramaiah will continue as Chief Minister and the party will complete its full term. On Mr. Hussain's claim of an agreement to make Mr. Shivakumar as the Chief Minister in the coming months, Dr. Mahadevappa said he had no information about such an agreement and said the reports about such an agreement could only be speculative. On the remarks of a possible revolution in three months, he said the MLAs themselves should be asked about their perception of revolution. 'Some legislators keep making statements as per their convenience. Revolutions will always be taking place to protect democracy and the Constitution,' he said.

No confusion over CM's post in Cong.; Siddaramaiah will inaugurate Dasara, says Mahadevappa

Clarifying that there was no confusion over the Chief Minister post in Karnataka in the Congress, Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa on Sunday said Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will inaugurate the Dasara festival this year. About the claim made by the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly R. Ashok that Mr. Siddaramaiah will not remain at the helm in the State by Dasara, Mr. Mahadevappa said Mr. Siddaramaiah will continue as the Chief Minister, and the Congress will complete its full five years in office. He hit out at Mr. Ashok saying that he was not the Congress High Command to predict a change of leadership in the Congress government in the State. He was only a leader of the Opposition in the BJP. About the reported statement by MLA for Ramanagara Iqbal Hussain that an agreement had been reached to make Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar as the Chief Minister in the coming months, Mr. Mahadevappa said he had no information about such an agreement and the report could be speculative. Regarding the BJP's statements on the change of Chief Minister, Mr. Mahadevappa said the condition of the BJP was like somebody waiting for a passing elephant to fall. 'The elephant will not fall, and the BJP will not stop waiting for the elephant to fall,' he said.
