Everything we know about a Squid Game US spin off

Just when we were all still reeling from the ending of Squid Game, the series decided to throw us one final curveball in the show's final moments. Now in California, the Front Man, AKA Hwang In-ho, notices two people playing ddakji in an alleyway. But when the camera turns around, we see that it's none other than Cate Blanchett! With a huge starlet making a rare appearance in the show, it must mean that something big is happening, right? Well, there's been some hints about what's to come next in the future of Squid Game including a US spin-off. So what can we expect? Here's everything you need to know about Squid Game's US spin-off. Back in October 2024, Deadline reported that a brand-new spin-off was being developed on the streamer with David Fincher at the helm of the project. Things have been pretty quiet since then and fans have been wondering if it was still in the works. Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke with Variety and said that Cate Blanchett's cameo is actually not a a direct link to the project. "Actually no, not at all. It's not related to that. All I wanted to have was just an impactful ending, and that's all that was to it. Honestly, I haven't heard officially from Netflix about David Fincher creating a Squid Game," he said. "I have heard the rumors of course though. But again, it was just the ending that I wanted for Season 3." Well, there's still another season of Squid Game: The Challenge to look forward to, so there's definitely more to come from the Squid Game universe. But in terms of direct spin-offs, Hwang Dong-hyuk says that he's open to what comes next. "I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never," he told Entertainment Weekly. He also noted that he already has an idea for a spin-off, but it's definitely not what fans might have in mind. "I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun looks around for the recruiters," Hwang said. "There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that. So that is some vague ideation that I have that could possibly be developed in the future." Will it actually come true? We'll have to wait and see! Until then, we have to hope the rumors of a US spin-off are true so we can see just what kind of recruiter Cate Blanchett really is like. Squid Game season 1-3 is available to stream on Netflix.

Brad Pitt Says ‘Se7en' 'Reinvigorated' His Passion for Acting After 'the Most Unhealthy Time'

David Fincher's Se7en played a part in reinvigorating Brad Pitt's passion for acting during the early years of his career. During a Monday appearance on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, the F1: The Movie star reflected on what he described as 'the most unhealthy time' in his life during the summer of 1994. He admitted that after having 'not such great experiences coming off a couple of jobs,' he wasn't sure where his career was heading. I had the weirdest summer,' he said. 'It was the most unhealthy time, I just needed to check out and I would wake up, I would get a bong load, I'd have four Coca Colas on no ice, no food this particular summer, and I watched the O.J. trial, trying to figure out what do I do next? What do I do next?' Pitt found himself 'reinvigorated' after he was presented with the Se7en script, though he was still initially hesitant about the film's storyline before he met with the director. 'Then I read this script, my dear friend and manager and basically my sister now, Cynthia, sends this over, [and] she says, 'You got to read this.' I read the first seven pages, I call her up and I go, 'Are you kidding me?'' Pitt explained. 'Like, [it was] the cliché old cop wants out, the young cop comes in and he's looking at his high school football trophies?' She goes, 'Just finish it.' Then I go meet Finch, and he was just talking about films like I'd never heard anyone speak about film.' The Oscar winner added, 'I just got the jones back, and finding that thing, it just reinvigorated what I wanted out of this thing.' Se7en follows the story of Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman), who is about to retire, and David Mills (Pitt), as they track down a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who murders people who he believes have committed one of the seven deadly sins. The film earned a sole nomination at the 68th Academy Awards for best film editing. Squid Game review: A rewarding third season filled with thrills, spills and a gripping final twist

Netflix has wrapped its tentacles around Squid Game and is refusing to let go. Following the conclusion of Hwang Dong-hyuk's brutal story of a sadistic survival contest on a mysterious island off the coast of Korea, there is speculation Social Network/Fight Club director David Fincher is to oversee a US adaptation of the franchise. That Squid Game is about to go international seems to be hinted at in the final episode of the show's third and concluding season (Netflix) when a Hollywood star turns up playing a western version of 'The Recruiter', who tempts the financially desperate to risk life, limb and sanity in the games. But Hwang has denied his series explicitly sets up a US spin-off. The Recruiter cameo (more about anon) is there to make the more serious point about how power structures can be pulled apart but always rise up again. 'I wanted to leave it on a note highlighting the fact that these systems, even if one comes down, it's not easy to dismantle the whole system – it will always repeat itself,' he told the Hollywood Reporter. 'That's why I wanted to end it with an American recruiter. And I wrote that scene wanting an impactful ending for the show, not in order to open rooms for anything else.' Impactful the end of Squid Game certainly is. It is also a marked improvement on the underwhelming second series . As the action resumes, Player 456 (Lee Jung-jae) has been forced to continue in the games despite leading a failed rebellion against the all-powerful Frontman (Lee Byung-hun). This year's challenges are every bit as dastardly as in earlier seasons – including a devious challenge where the remaining contestants are divided into two teams, and one is instructed to kill the other. Opens in new window ] Out in the real world, meanwhile, Frontman's brother Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) proceeds in his search for the mysterious island where the games are taking place. Then there is North Korean defector Kang No-eul (aka 011). She is trying to take down the games from the inside and rescue the newborn child of Jun-hee (her way of dealing with her trauma over her daughter's disappearance). It's grippingly dark stuff. Hwang, to his credit, pulls off a rewardingly paradoxical finale by killing off a major character and giving several other protagonists redemptive endings. And then, at the end, there is that cameo, with Lady Galadriel herself, Cate Blanchett, playing the American Recruiter. It is a final twist at the end of a show packed tight with thrills, spills and gory demises. But of course, the one death that is not permitted is of Squid Game itself, which Netflix, via Fincher, is determined to keep alive at any cost.

Brad Pitt Says David Fincher ‘Reinvigorated' His Love of Acting During ‘Se7en'

Brad Pitt might have quit Hollywood if it wasn't for David Fincher. The actor recently reflected on how working with the auteur 'reinvigorated' his love of filmmaking at a time when he needed it the most. Pitt said during Dax Shepard's 'Armchair Expert' podcast (in the below video) that after a slew of big budget box office disappointments in the early '90s, he was reevaluating his life in the summer of 1994. By that time, Pitt had starred in films such as 'The Favor,' 'Cool World,' and 'Legends of the Fall.' (His hit 'Interview with the Vampire' wasn't released until November 1994.) More from IndieWire SCAD Takes Cannes: IndieWire's Future of Filmmaking 'The Eva Victor Grad Program': Inside the Year-and-a-Half the Director Spent Preparing to Make 'Sorry, Baby' Pitt recalled it being 'the most unhealthy time' in his life, leading him to look to 'check out' out Hollywood as whole. 'I would wake up, I would get a bong load, I would have four Coca-Colas on ice, no food,' Pitt said. 'This particular summer, I watched the O.J. trial, and I was just trying to figure out, 'What do I do next? What do I do next?'' It wasn't until the script for 'Se7en' arrived that Pitt felt the desire to work again. 'My dear friend and manager and, basically my sister now, Cynthia, sends [the 'Se7en' script] over,' Pitt said. 'She says, 'You've got to read this.' I read the first seven pages, I call her up, I go, 'Are you kidding me? The cliché old cop wants out, the young cop comes in and he's looking at his high school football trophies?' She goes, 'Just finish it.' Then I go meet with Finch, and he was just talking about films like I'd never heard anyone speak about film. I just got the jones back. Finding that thing kind of … it just reinvigorated what I wanted out of this thing.' Pitt went on to star in 'Se7en,' and would go on to reunite with Fincher for the iconic 'Fight Club' and 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.' He will reportedly collaborate with Fincher again for the 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' spinoff film about his fictional stunt man character Cliff Booth. Quentin Tarantino wrote the quasi-sequel, which will be released by Netflix.
