Santino Ferrucci Out For Toronto After Morning Crash Damages Car Beyond Repair
TORONTO — Santino Ferrucci will miss the INDYCAR race today at Toronto, as a hard crash in the morning warm-up damaged the car beyond repair. With only three hours between the end of the warm-up and the start of the race, the A.J. Foyt Racing team did not have time to adequately repair the car or get the spare car ready to race. Ferrucci was icing his hand after the accident, but the team indicated it was not broken and Ferrucci said he would be OK. The accident occurred in the last few minutes of the 25-minute morning warm-up. Ferrucci said it was purely driver error, as he had not disengaged the hybrid power boost and was on the primary (harder) tires, which meant more power going into Turn 8. The rear of the car swung around and he slapped the outside wall hard. "Mistake," Ferrucci said. "I'm struggling obviously with the car. It was wet [from rain earlier] in that corner and I had been lifting and just out of habit, I'd been pulling the hybrid and I forgot to turn the hybrid off. ... I just lost the rear [of the car]. "It was a little bit of the boost in the power, it was just enough [and] we were also on the prime tire instead of the [softer] alternate just to get a read. Just a driving error. I feel pretty bad about that." Ferrucci was 10th in the series standings but had struggled this weekend on the Toronto streets. He was slated to start 23rd. Ferrucci will be awarded three points (instead of five for last place) for qualifying for the race but not starting. "The damage sustained to the car requires extensive repairs that cannot be completed to the standard of safety and performance necessary to race," the team said in a statement. "While this is a difficult decision for the team, the safety of our driver and our crew remains our top priority." Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. INDYCAR Driver Nolan Siegel Not Medically Cleared For Sunday's Race At Iowa
NEWTON, Iowa — INDYCAR driver Nolan Siegel will miss the second race of the Iowa Speedway doubleheader weekend after a hard crash in the opener on Saturday. Siegel was not cleared by the INDYCAR medical staff to race. His injuries were not disclosed. The Arrow McLaren No. 6 car will not compete in the 275-lap event which airs at 1 p.m. ET on FOX. After he exited the medical center on Saturday, Siegel indicated he planned to race today despite the hard hit, which caused the race to be stopped briefly so the wall could be repaired. "Yeah, it's a big hit, but yeah, I'm fine, I think," Siegel said Saturday. "We'll be good. I'm excited for tomorrow, starting fifth. It will be a good day. It was a good day today [until the wreck]." But after being re-evaluated Sunday morning, Siegel was not cleared. No one else changes position as there will be no car on the inside of Row 3 for the start of the race. "There's no place I'd rather be than out there driving today, especially from P5, one of my best starting positions of the season," Siegel said in a statement. "I know I'm in good hands with the INDYCAR medical team and thank them for the great care they provide us drivers. "Most of all, I feel for [my] crew. They gave me a rocket this weekend and put in a ton of work last night with hopes we'd be racing today. They deserve to be out there fighting for podium, and we'll be back soon to do just that." Siegel said Saturday that the handling of his car changed late in the race. "It was a little weird from the time I left pit lane and hadn't had a lot of oversteer up until then," Siegel said. "And then I just lost it in the middle of [turns] 3 and 4. I was pushing hard. ... There's not much more to it." The team opted not to scramble to find a driver to put in the car for the race today, considering they only got a few hours of notice. Siegel, who is 21st in the series standings, will earn three points instead of the typical five for a 27th-place finish since he is not starting the race. "I've been there, I know how Nolan feels not racing today," team principal Tony Kanaan said in a statement. "It's the worst feeling in the world. The most important thing, though, is that he's fit to race, and unfortunately that's not the case today. "It was a tough decision to park the car, but we've been through this before. We just found out this morning he's not cleared, and we decided the best thing for the team is to not rush into switching drivers this weekend. It's too much of a shuffle and unnecessary stress when we're right back to racing in Toronto in a week." Kanaan said the team will work on a contingency plan for Toronto in case Siegel is not cleared. Last year, the team used a couple of substitute drivers when David Malukas broke his wrist mountain biking prior to the season. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. NASCAR Clash Will Return To Bowman Gray In 2026
NASCAR will return to Bowman Gray Stadium for the preseason exhibition Clash in 2026. The municipally-owned stadium, the home field for Winston-Salem State University, has a quarter-mile track that circles the football field. It was built in 1937 and had Cup races from 1958-71 and has continued to play host to weekly racing throughout the summers. NASCAR took over operations of the track, signing a contract with the City of Winston-Salem in 2024. NASCAR brought Cup back to the facility in February for the 2025 Clash and returns again Feb. 1 for the event that traditionally begins the season and will kick off the FOX Sports portion of the Cup schedule. Local restaurant chain Cook Out will sponsor the event, which sold out last year and was won by Chase Elliott. "We wrote a new chapter in the storied history of motorsports at Bowman Gray Stadium with the Cook Out Clash this year," said NASCAR Regional managing director Joey Dennewitz. "As NASCAR's first weekly race track, we are proud to bring the 2026 Cook Out Clash back to the original home to grassroots racing." NASCAR has not announced its 2026 schedule yet, but the news release indicated the Clash would open the season. The 2026 Daytona 500 will open the regular season and is scheduled for Feb. 15, two weeks following the Clash. Bob Pockrass covers NASCAR and INDYCAR for FOX Sports. Alex Palou's Rare Miscue Gifts Scott Dixon Win At Mid-Ohio: 'A Stupid Mistake'
Scott Dixon captured his first victory of the season, ending his teammate Alex Palou's dominance on road courses this year. Palou appeared as if he would cruise to his seventh win of the INDYCAR season, but he went off course on Lap 85 of the 90-lap race Sunday at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Dixon pounced, speeding by Palou and then holding him off — while still needing to save fuel — for the win. It was the first win in more than a year for Dixon, who has won six series titles and celebrated his 59th victory. The veteran Dixon has now won in 23 different seasons and extended his streak of consecutive seasons with a win to 21. "It was definitely a tough race," Dixon said. "Full credit to everybody at Chip Ganassi Racing. ... It was just a joy to drive." Palou still finished second as the Chip Ganassi Racing driver continues to eye a fourth series title. It was a rare mistake for Palou during this season, where he has still won six of the first 10 races. He extended his points lead to 113 points ahead of Kyle Kirkwood with seven races left in the season. "Just a stupid mistake honestly," Palou said. "A mistake on my part. ... Nobody to blame by me. It sucks. It hurts a lot." Christian Lundgaard, who had started on the front row beside pole-sitter Palou, finished third with Colton Herta fourth and Pato O'Ward fifth.
