Sacramento Kings Earn Unflattering Comparison Amid NBA Playoffs

Sacramento Kings Earn Unflattering Comparison Amid NBA Playoffs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Sacramento Kings, with a core of DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, and Domantas Sabonis, are expected to make a push for a point guard this offseason to allow them to compete in the Western Conference. Advertisement It could be pointed out that the Kings had two elite point guards on the roster, De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton. Had Sacramento kept either one of them, they likely would be playoff staples by now instead of a middling team without a first-round draft pick. The Kings aren't the only team that helped build a Finals-bound team, and they likely aren't the only franchise that wishes they could take everything back. This season, the Thunder did what the Clippers have never been able to do, and made the Finals directly on the backs of those two players. Advertisement The Toronto Raptors, as well, traded away their 2019 core, sending Pascal Siakam to the Pacers, who was eventually replaced by Brandon Ingram. Ingram and Siakam play the same position, but one is very clearly better than the other. "Toronto is one of those teams that is sitting there on the balls of its feet, which is interesting because it's kind of like hearing about Sacramento, because Sacramento is one of them too," said ESPN's Brian Windhorst. "I don't think that's breaking news. And the funny thing, of course, is that Sacramento wants a point guard." Being compared to the Clippers and their blunders and the Raptors, who have missed the playoffs for three seasons in a row, is not exactly high praise. Had the Kings, Clippers, and Raptors never made those trades, the NBA Finals picture likely would look a lot different. NBA insider reveals what San Antonio Spurs are expected to do with second pick in 2025 NBA Draft

The San Antonio Spurs were one of the biggest losers of the draft lottery once again, moving up to land the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. While there are a few directions the organization could go with the selection, many around the league already believe they know what will happen. ESPN's Jeremy Woo writes that while there is 'wide speculation' San Antonio will field trade calls on the No. 2 pick, the expectation around the league is the team will select guard Dylan Harper. Advertisement Related: San Antonio Spurs expected to pursue two superstars this summer While San Antonio has been viewed as a potential landing spot for Giannis Antetokounmpo, he still hasn't asked the Milwaukee Bucks to trade him. Even if he does, the Spurs could still take a long-term approach with their rebuild and retain their top assets. It's also been made clear that the De'Aaron Fox trade last February won't stand in the way of the Spurs drafting Harper. San Antonio would likely run a backcourt of Fox and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year guard Stephon Castle, while Booker comes off the bench. Related: Spurs expected to be eyeing specific 2025 NBA Draft target San Antonio has been previously linked to Kevin Durant, who could be made available this summer by the Phoenix Suns. He wouldn't cost the second overall pick, but the 36-year-old forward also might not align with the club's timeline. Advertisement Ultimately, it seems like the Spurs are going to stick with a very patient approach to building this team. Harper will likely be part of the rotation next season and if he plays well, it could allow San Antonio to opt against giving Fox a max contract. San Antonio Spurs, perennial All-Star reportedly had mutual interest in trade

The San Antonio Spurs have the second overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, positioning them to either pick or trade for a cornerstone player to pair with Victor Wembanyama. Already linked to several star-caliber players in NBA rumors, it appears the interest is mutual with at least one of them. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on the Pat McAfee Show that All-Star forward Kevin Durant and the Spurs had mutual interest in a pairing ahead of the NBA trade deadline. It came ahead of a summer where many around the league expect Durant to be dealt. Unlike Golden State, where Durant blocked a trade to, he was very receptive to the idea of playing for the Spurs. On some level, Durant makes more sense for San Antonio than acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo. While Antetokounmpo is the superior talent and younger, he would cost significantly more to acquire. The Spurs could land Durant and keep the second overall pick. San Antonio could then use the second overall pick on guard Dylan Harper, bringing him off the bench behind Castle and Fox. While Phoenix isn't expected to make massive changes this summer, there's a growing belief that Durant will be traded. If the Suns don't have an issue trading Durant inside the Western Conference, the Spurs could be well-positioned to acquire him. New Photos of Victor Wembanyama Surface After Season-Ending Injury

Victor Wembanyama's sophomore season with the San Antonio Spurs did not go according to plan. The 21-year-old phenom was an undeniably dominant force in the first half of the campaign, only for it to be cut short by a troubling season-ending injury. The Spurs decided to shut down their prized superstar after Wembanyama was diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder. It was reported in March that the 7-foot-3 big man had successfully undergone surgery to address the issue, with the Spurs fully expecting to get him back for the start of the 2025-26 season. Advertisement Wembanyama appears to be heading in that direction, and his recent photos seem to serve as proof of the same. A couple of pictures of the Frenchman on vacation in Costa Rica are currently making their rounds on social media. In them, Wembanyama is seen putting up some shots on the court. While there have been no recent major updates on Wembanyama's current status, it's great to see him back on the basketball court. The fact that he's playing ball while on vacation abroad further proves the type of mentality and work ethic this young man possesses. In 46 games played this past season, Wembanyama registered averages of 24.3 points on 47.6% shooting, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and a league-leading 3.8 blocks, while also knocking down 3.1 triples per game on a 35.2% clip. Possible San Antonio Spurs Offseason Move Touted as 'Disaster'

The San Antonio Spurs, for the sixth year in a row, will be drafting in the lottery. With a young core of Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, and, of course, Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs are expected to compete for a playoff spot next season, and the addition of De'Aaron Fox should give fans plenty of reasons to be excited. The Spurs own their own pick and one from the Atlanta Hawks, both of which are in the lottery. San Antonio has a combined 6.7 percent chance of drafting first overall. Advertisement If the Spurs can somehow land Cooper Flagg, it will kickstart a dynasty, and fans of 29 teams might boycott the NBA. "A Spurs lottery win would only widen the gap between the West and the inferior East, and it would give San Antonio an embarrassment of riches when also factoring in their surplus of future first-round picks," wrote SB Nation's Ricky O'Donnell. "Putting Flagg next to him for the next 10 years would just be overkill (by the way, 10 years from now, Flagg will only be 28 and Wembanyama will only be 31). A Spurs lottery win would be a disaster for the rest of the league. San Antonio with Wemby and Flagg would be absurdly good." Of course, the Spurs likely won't be in the running to draft Flagg, which, from a league-wide marketing standpoint, would be a good thing. Wembanyama is already the face of French Basketball, and Flagg was invited to Team USA's training camp ahead of the Paris Olympics. Advertisement If the league could market the 2029 NBA Finals as a "Gold Medal Rematch" and have competing young stars meet in the postseason, the rating would be off the charts. While Spurs' fans can dream of the pairing, the rest of the NBA would like to see Flagg land anywhere else. Check out the Inside the Spurs home page for more news, analysis, and must-read articles.
