Man convicted in DeLand murder plotted with victim's stepdaughter for insurance payout
A man was convicted and sentenced to life in prison June 26 for his part in a plot with his girlfriend to kill her stepfather in DeLand and cash in on his insurance money. Perry Stanley Sr., 48, of Apopka, was found guilty as charged of first-degree murder. He was also convicted of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Circuit Judge Elizabeth Blackburn sentenced Stanley to the mandatory life in prison without parole. Stanley shot Terrance Gibson, 59, of DeLand on Jan. 31, 2019, in an open lot on West Euclid Avenue. Stanley and Gibson's stepdaughter, Myesha Williams, 36, had increased Gibson's accidental death insurance policy from $25,000 to $750,000 16 days before his murder, according to State Attorney's Office Public Information Officer Haley Harrison. They expected to receive $150,000 from the policy, she wrote. Stanley pretended to be Gibson during a phone call to confirm the change to the insurance agent. Detectives recovered a cellphone used by Stanley near the scene of the murder. Detectives learned that Stanley called Williams seven minutes before the murder. "We do not give up our fight to make justice a reality for the citizens of the 7th Circuit. This case demonstrates our resolve," State Attorney R.J. Larizza stated in the press release. DeLand Police investigated the case with help from the Volusia Sheriff's Office. Assistant State Attorneys Helen Schwartz and Annamarie Danylo prosecuted the case. Williams pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder with a firearm as part of a plea agreement that calls for her to face between 25 to 50 years in prison with credit for time served. She agreed to testify about the plot and cooperate with law enforcement. Williams had been indicted on a charge of first-degree murder which carries a sentence of mandatory life in prison. Williams is awaiting sentencing. This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: Man guilty in DeLand murder arranged by victim's stepdaughter

Volusia deputies: Overnight shootings send teen to hospital
Volusia deputies are investigating two late night shootings, one of which sent a 16-year-old to the hospital, authorities said Sunday. The first shooting took place just before midnight Saturday at a house on Kings Ridge Terrace in Deltona, deputies stated. According to a sheriff's office Facebook post, a resident said he was outside his house when he was approached by a subject with a gun. The resident fled into the house and locked the door. The Facebook posts states a second subject reportedly fired at least one shot at the residence from the street before both suspects left the scene. No injuries were reported, deputies stated. Suspect in DeLand bar shooting arrested, police say
The suspect who fled the scene of a shooting at McCabe's bar was arrested on Sunday, according to the DeLand Police Department. Police arrested Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, 55, on Sunday on charges of attempted first-degree murder and using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol, the agency said. Around 2 a.m. on Saturday, police allege, Gilbert was at McCabe's bar and offered to buy a man — whom he didn't know prior — a drink but at closing he demanded the man pay him back, DeLand PD said. When the man didn't pay, an argument ensued and Gilbert took out a black handgun and fired a single shot at the man standing three feet away, the police said. The man ducked and was not hit by the bullet. Through their investigation, police discovered surveillance video that showed the incident and Gilbert — who was later identified via a photo lineup by the victim — fleeing the area on foot, then getting into a tan 1999 Nissan Quest van. Gilbert was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and held on no bond, the agency said. A media conference was scheduled for Tuesday at DeLand Police Department headquarters.

Former college football star Avantae Williams faces life in prison after arrest over deadly shooting
Former college football star Avantae Williams could be facing a lifetime in prison following a deadly shooting in Florida at the weekend. Williams, 24, a former safety for Maryland and Miami, was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that left one man dead and a bartender injured at a bar north of Orlando. 32-year-old Keshod Harris was shot several times during an altercation at McCabe's in DeLand, around 34 miles outside of Orlando. Cops responded to calls at the bar at around 1:30am local time on Saturday, DeLand Police Department said in a report. Approximately 40 people where inside the bar when a fist fight broke out between several men before one produced a firearm and opened fire, eyewitness told investigators. Harris was struck multiple times in the chest and was rushed to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries. A bartender was also hit in the crossfire, sustaining gunshot wound to both hands. They were also transported to hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Williams is said to have fled the scene, according to the police report, but was identified as the suspect by investigators and detained on Monday after an arrest warrant was issued. He is now in custody at the Volusia County Jail and is reportedly charged with second-degree murder. The sentence for second-degree murder in Florida is anywhere from 16 years to life. It is currently unclear what triggered the altercation and it is not known if Harris was Williams' intended victim. Police are continuing to investigate the incident. 'There was chaos, you know, everybody was running,' Stephanie Kirby, the bartender who witnessed the shooting, told Fox35. 'When bullets are flying, and you don't know where they're gonna land, that's pretty scary,' she added. Kirby recalled hiding behind the bar before helping customers flee. She said her close friend and colleague, Courtney, was shot while trying to de-escalate the situation. She described Harris, the victim, as being calm and socializing with friends before the altercation occurred. 'He wasn't like hardcore partying, but he was chill and hanging out with his friends. He bought friends some rounds, and he was out socializing.' Williams, a DeLand native, played football on a scholarship for both the Maryland Terrapins and the Miami Hurricanes. Williams graduated from DeLand High School after establishing himself as the top safety in his recruiting class, according to ESPN. He went on to play two seasons for Miami before finishing his college career with Maryland during the 2023-24 season.
