DELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — A Florida man was arrested over the weekend after police said he shot at another man over a $5 beer. The DeLand Police Department said it was called to McCabe's Bar on Amelia Avenue in DeLand around 2 a.m. on Saturday to investigate a shooting. According to police, 55-year-old Calvin Gilbert had been drinking with a man he didn't know at the bar that night. Officers said surveillance video captured the incident and Gilbert fleeing the scene in a tan 1999 Nissan Quest van. Investigators spoke with witnesses and the victim, who identified Gilbert through a photo lineup. Law enforcement officers found Gilbert on Sunday morning in Daytona Beach. 'Within 34 hours, we had this individual in custody,' DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger said. The judge at the court hearing stated he didn't know the specifics as to what their other judge saw in the affidavit, and gave Gilbert's attorney the option to file a bond motion – a formal request made to the court asking for the release of a defendant from custody, usually on bail or bond, before their trial. When the man didn't pay, an argument ensued and Gilbert took out a black handgun and fired a single shot at the man standing three feet away, the police said. The man ducked and was not hit by the bullet. Through their investigation, police discovered surveillance video that showed the incident and Gilbert — who was later identified via a photo lineup by the victim — fleeing the area on foot, then getting into a tan 1999 Nissan Quest van. Gilbert was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail and held on no bond, the agency said. A media conference was scheduled for Tuesday at DeLand Police Department headquarters.

What we know According to the DeLand Police Department, the incident began at McCabe's Bar, where Calvin Roosevelt Gilbert, 55, had been drinking with the victim, a man he had just met. Witnesses said Gilbert purchased a beer for the victim, then demanded repayment when the bar closed. The confrontation escalated outside in the rear parking lot, where Gilbert allegedly pulled a black handgun from a satchel and fired one shot from about three feet away. The victim ducked and was not injured, but the bullet struck a cooler and pierced the wall of an occupied building. Officers with DeLand Police and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office responded around 2:05 a.m. Investigators recovered a single 9mm shell casing and confirmed damage from the gunfire. Surveillance footage captured Gilbert fleeing on foot and then driving off in a tan 1999 Nissan Quest van. Gilbert was positively identified by both the victim and bar staff in a photo lineup. A second victim, an employee at a liquor store connected to the bar, was also injured—shot in both hands while trying to break up the fight. Avantae Williams, a DeLand resident and a well-known former University of Miami football player, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection to the shooting. Former Miami and Maryland football player Avantae Williams has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection to a shooting on Saturday, according to a DeLand Police Department news release. Williams — a former top-50 ranked prospect out of DeLand High School in DeLand, Florida — turned himself in to police at a lawyer's office on Monday with no incident, according to The Daytona Beach News-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. As of Wednesday morning, Williams was in the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond, per the News-Journal. Per the DeLand news release, officers responded to a shooting around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday at a bar in DeLand, Florida. Witnesses told investigators a fistfight broke out between several people in the bar, before one of the men pulled out a firearm and started shooting, according to the news release. Police said Keshod Harris, 32, was shot and killed. A bartender was also injured in the shooting, sustaining gunshot wounds to both hands. They were treated with non-life-threatening injuries. As reported by the News-Journal, Harris got into an argument at 1:25 a.m. at McCabe's Bar — less than 20 minutes from Stetson University in Florida — with Damian "D" Ramsey, who was there with Williams and another man, per an affidavit. Harris, Williams and Ramsey had previously left a celebration at the Chisholm Community Center after Harris had arrived there and argued with his girlfriend. The News-Journal reported that Ramsey had previously tried "to be with her romantically," before Saturday's shooting. Per the News-Journal, Harris and Williams began fighting, with Harris punching Williams in the jaw. Ramsey then stood up and punched Harris in the back of the head. Williams pushed Harris away, grabbed a gun from his right pocket and fired into Harris' left rib cage. Williams reportedly ran past Harris, who was motionless on the ground, and shot him in the back before running out of the bar with Ramsey. Harris was pronounced dead after he was transported to AdventHealth DeLand. The News-Journal reported that an autopsy of Harris revealed he had been shot seven times, with six bullets remaining in his body. Williams fled the scene with Ramsey. The News-Journal reports a witness identified Williams from a photo lineup, and that police had picked up an iPhone that Williams set down when he fought Harris. The News-Journal also notes that police used a license plate detection system to identify the vehicle in which Williams left the scene. It was determined to belong to an "associate" of Williams, and was seized as evidence. Williams was the No. 45-ranked player and No. 2 safety of the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' Composite rankings. He had 30 total tackles in his career across two seasons at Miami and another at Maryland. He last played in 2023.
