Oklahoma Sooners vault themselves into contention for must-have recruit after successful major recruiting event
Oklahoma Sooners vault themselves into contention for must-have recruit after successful major recruiting event originally appeared on A to Z Sports. The Oklahoma Sooners have been on a tear in recruiting over the summer, with 13 commits since May 13th, including elite quarterback Bowe Bentley. Over the weekend, they added a potential starter in the trenches in offensive tackle Deacon Schmitt, and they are hunting for more. Advertisement One of their next targets is four-star wide receiver Jordan Clay. Clay, a top-100 recruit and a near-consensus top-ten wide receiver in the 2026 class, visited the Sooners last weekend, and his visit vaulted the Sooners into the running to secure his commitment. In an interview with SoonerScoop, Clay admitted that Oklahoma wasn't at the top of the schools he was considering, but he still went on the visit. "They were a little bit lower on my list going into the visit. But after that visit, they definitely jumped up into the race for was great. I got to spend time with the coaches and socialize with some of the players currently playing at OU. I just got to pick their brains, learn from them, and see what they had to adjust to coming in as freshmen." Clay spent time with several faces in the wide receiver room, as well as wide receivers coach Emmett Jones, who Clay remarked was a different style of recruiter. While most coaches say "we want you here", Jones instead told Clay that he shouldn't "play with his future" if he knows where he wants to go. That was a refreshing take that resonated with Clay. Bowe Bentley did some recruiting of his own, as well. Bentley reached out to Clay, saying the two could "make history" with the Sooners if they joined up in the class. Advertisement Clay has set his commitment date for July 11th. After missing out on a few other wide receivers in this class, Clay is a must-win for the Sooners. Oklahoma will have to stave off Baylor, the presumed frontrunner, as well as Miami and Texas. Related: What's next for the Oklahoma Sooners Recruiting Class of 2026? Alabama Dealt Unfortunate Recruiting News on Saturday
Alabama Dealt Unfortunate Recruiting News on Saturday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Alabama Crimson Tide were one of three finalists for 2026 offensive tackle Deacon Schmitt. However, Schmitt did not end up picking the Crimson Tide and instead chose another SEC school. On3's Hayes Fawcett reported Saturday that Schmitt decided to go with the Oklahoma Sooners. Advertisement His finalists were Alabama and the Colorado Buffaloes. Schmitt is a native of Windsor, Colorado, and comes in at 6-foot-5, 310 pounds. He also held offers from the Kansas State Wildcats, USC Trojans, Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State Buckeyes, and others. Schmitt would have Alabama's first offensive tackle commit from the 2026 class. The Crimson Tide has commits from two inside offensive linemen, but no offensive tackles. Windsor's Deacon Schmitt. © Logan Newell/The Coloradoan / USA TODAY NETWORK Schmitt is a four-star prospect and the No. 30 offensive tackle in the On3 Industry Rankings. He is the top recruit from Colorado in the 2026 class. The Sooners made him a priority during the recruiting process, hosting him for five visits. Alabama recently had Schmitt in Tuscaloosa for an official visit on May 30. Advertisement Oklahoma was the second-to-last school to see Schmitt before his commitment, having him in Norman on June 6. Regardless of Schmitt's commitment to Oklahoma, Alabama's 2026 class still ranks No. 9 overall on On3 Sports. The class is highlighted by five-star corner Jorden Edmonds, five-star running back Ezavier Crowell, and four-star corner Zyan Gibson. While not getting Schmitt was a recruiting blow, the Crimson Tide received some good news from four-star edge rusher Jamarion Matthews. Matthews took to social media on Saturday to reaffirm his commitment to Alabama, shutting down his recruitment. The second year of the Kalen DeBoer era opens against the Florida State Seminoles on August 30. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Colorado football key 2026 offensive line target commits to SEC program
Colorado football class of 2026 target, offensive lineman Deacon Schmitt, committed to Oklahoma on Saturday. Schmitt chose the Sooners over the Buffaloes and the Alabama Crimson Tide. 247Sports Composite ranks the Windsor, Colorado, native as the No. 371 overall player in the class of 2026, the No. 31 interior offensive lineman and the top prospect from his home state. His commitment follows official visits to each of his four finalists, including Boulder on May 2. Schmitt joins an Oklahoma class of 2026 that currently ranks No. 36 in the nation with 14 players committed. Despite having a nearly top 30-ranked class, the Sooners still are on the outside looking in, sitting at No. 10 among SEC recruiting classes. The Buffs should view Schmitt's commitment as a missed opportunity to keep one of the top Colorado recruits in-state. However, it became clear that the Buffs were significantly behind the Sooners in recent weeks. After receiving two commitments this week, Colorado's 2026 class does not feel as bleak with four recruits now in the fold. Schmitt's decision was one of the four top targets scheduled to announce their commitment over the next couple of weeks. Adding more blue-chip prospects will be key to Colorado improving a relatively slow start to the current recruiting cycle. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
