Kerry man Mike talks working alongside Hollywood stars in Svalbard for new Mission: Impossible movie
The last time I spoke to Kerry's Mike O'Shea was in July of 2023 when the seventh Mission: Impossible film 'Dead Reckoning' came out in cinemas and he spoke of working on designing and building what was then the biggest stunt that the franchise – and possibly cinema as a whole – had ever seen.

Box Office: Soaring demand for The Final Reckoning prompts BFI IMAX to add 9am shows, delay How to Train Your Dragon debut
Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is proving to be an IMAX sensation in the UK, particularly at the iconic BFI IMAX in London. With demand surging and nearly all shows sold out, the cinema has opened additional 9 a.m. screenings. In an unprecedented move, it has also delayed the debut of How to Train Your Dragon from June 6 to 9, allowing The Final Reckoning to dominate the premium screen for an extended three-day window. Despite ticket prices ranging between approximately USD 32.30 to 37.70 and being non-refundable, fans are still showing up in large numbers, turning the film into an IMAX phenomenon, something Dead Reckoning never achieved during the Barbenheimer-dominated summer of 2023. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, The Final Reckoning, for those uninitiated, is the eighth installment in the long-running Mission: Impossible series and serves as a direct sequel to Dead Reckoning Part One. Cruise reprises his iconic role as Ethan Hunt, alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett. This time, the Impossible Mission Force faces off against a rogue artificial intelligence known as The Entity, as it threatens to wreak global havoc. The film's production journey was ambitious, lengthy, and expensive. Originally intended to be shot back-to-back with its predecessor, production was disrupted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and eventually wrapped in late 2024. Filming took place across several countries, including England, Malta, South Africa, and Norway. With a reported budget of USD 300 to 400 million, it ranks among the most expensive films ever made. The Final Reckoning premiered in Tokyo on May 5 and later screened out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It was released worldwide on May 23 to critical acclaim and has grossed USD 227.1 million globally, ranking as the eighth highest-grossing film of the year so far. It also recorded the franchise's biggest opening weekend to date. To promote the film, Tom Cruise made headlines in early May when he climbed to the roof of the BFI IMAX. In a fitting honor, he was also awarded the prestigious BFI Fellowship, solidifying his last of the Hollywood stars status both on and off screen.

Box Office: The Final Reckoning wraps China pre-sales at USD 3.2M, eyes USD 24M–USD 30M opening weekend
Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning is looking at a high-stakes debut in China today. The Tom Cruise-led action film wrapped its seven-day ticket pre-sale campaign on Thursday with a total of USD 3.2 million secured for the Friday-to-Sunday launch window, setting the stage for what could be a No. 1 opening weekend in the country. The pre-sale figure places the eighth installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise alongside notable past openers, including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (USD 3M), Dead Reckoning (USD 3.2M), and No Time to Die (USD 3.3M). However, it trails behind recent bigger pre-sale performers such as Deadpool & Wolverine (USD 3.7M), Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (USD 4.5M), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (USD 6M), and Jurassic World Dominion (USD 7.1M). Breaking down the numbers, The Final Reckoning earned USD 1.9 million in pre-sales for its Friday opening day, followed by USD 935,000 for Saturday and USD 309,000 for Sunday. Despite a strong start, momentum waned in the final three days of advance bookings, with sales stagnating and eventually matching those of Dead Reckoning, despite initially outpacing it. One key factor contributing to the slowdown is the absence of Thursday preview screenings, a decision by the studio that has left the film heavily reliant on its Friday performance to build word-of-mouth. Still, exhibitors in China appear optimistic, given 106,000 screenings have been booked for the day, indicating solid industry confidence. Given the current trajectory, The Final Reckoning is projected to open between USD 24 million and USD 30 million in its three-day debut, depending on how well general bookings do. It remains to be seen if the latest entry can outpace Dead Reckoning's USD 24.8 million opening in China two years ago. Mission: Impossible 8 Trailer HERE: Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film continues the saga of Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and his IMF team as they confront a rogue AI threatening humanity. The ensemble cast includes Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett. With a production budget between USD 300 and USD 400 million, it ranks among the most expensive films ever made. Following its global rollout on May 23, The Final Reckoning has already grossed USD 227.1 million worldwide and is currently the eighth highest-grossing film of 2025. Its performance in China this weekend could provide a critical boost to its international totals.

Mission Impossible Final Reckoning Box Office: Tom Cruise starrer hangs on in 2nd week in India
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning collected Rs. 29.50 crore (USD 3.50 million) approx in its second week in India, marking a drop of 50 per cent from its shortened six-day first week. The two-week running total of this Tom Cruise starrer stands at Rs. 89 crore (USD 10.40 million). The film had an underwhelming start last week, when it opened considerably lower than its predecessor, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning. However, in the second week, it has held up better with Rs. 29.50 crore against Rs. 20.50 crore of Dead Reckoning. Granted, Dead Reckoning had an extended nine-day first week, which meant it had burned off more demand in the first week and then faced massive competition from Barbenheimer in its second week, so it's not really a fair comparison, but The Final Reckoning holds are good in isolation as well. In fact, its second-week rank as the sixth highest for a Hollywood film in India this decade, while the first week was outside the top ten. The Box Office Collections of Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning in India are as follows: The film should hold up well in the third week as well, by the end of which it should be over Rs. 100 crore mark. In the fourth week, it will face competition from Housefull 5 and Thug Life, so the collection will take a hit, but there seems to be momentum to aim for a Rs. 110 crore finish from here. That would make it the second-highest grosser in the franchise, unadjusted for inflation, behind Dead Reckoning (Rs. 132 crore), just ahead of Fallout (Rs. 106 crore). The expectations were obviously higher for something like Rs. 150 crore but sort of start film had, this is a relatively better finish. As far as the domestic box office goes, The Final Reckoning seems like it will cross Dead Reckoning with ease. It targets to go past USD 200 million in its full run. For the sort of budget it has, the target should have been higher.

Fans Claim This Mission: Impossible Popcorn Bucket Is Cooler Than The Movie
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is here and while Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt is pulling off one last high-stakes adventure on screen, something else is stealing the spotlight off-screen – a popcorn bucket. Yes, you read that right. This isn't just any snack holder. It is an interactive, key-unlocking popcorn bucket that has become the centre of attention for fans heading to the cinemas. Regal Cinemas unveiled this one-of-a-kind collectible on Instagram on May 1. It is designed with an idea that connects directly to the movie. The top of the bucket stays shut unless you use a special two-part key which is similar to the cruciform key shown in 2023's Dead Reckoning. In that film, Ethan Hunt is chasing the key to control a dangerous artificial intelligence known as the Entity. In real life, you use the key to unlock your popcorn. Once opened, the top lifts to reveal the snack inside. There is even a button at the bottom that turns on a blue light inside the bucket.
