Israel says struck Yemen's rebel-held Hodeida port

AFP: Defense Minister Israel Katz said Israel's military on Monday struck 'terror targets' belonging to the Houthi rebels at the Yemeni port of Hodeida. The Israeli military 'has just struck terror targets of the Houthi terror regime at the port of Hodeida and is forcefully enforcing the prevention of any attempt to restore the previously attacked terror infrastructure,' Katz said in a statement. In a separate statement, the army said that 'among the military infrastructure struck were engineering vehicles... fuel containers, naval vessels used for military activities and force against the State of Israel and vessels in the maritime zone adjacent to the port, and additional terror infrastructure used by the Houthi terrorist regime.'

Australia delivers Abrams tanks to Ukraine for war with Russia

SYDNEY: Australia's government said on Saturday it had delivered M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of a A$245 million ($160 million) package to help the country defend itself against Russia in their ongoing war. Australia, one of the largest non-NATO contributors to Ukraine, has been supplying aid, ammunition and defense equipment since Moscow invaded its neighbor in February 2022. Ukraine has taken possession of most of the 49 tanks given by Australia, and the rest will be delivered in coming months, said Defense Minister Richard Marles. 'The M1A1 Abrams tanks will make a significant contribution to Ukraine's ongoing fight against Russia's illegal and immoral invasion,' Marles said in a statement. The tanks formed part of the A$1.5 billion ($980 million) that Canberra has provided Ukraine in the conflict, the government said. Australia has also banned exports of alumina and aluminum ores, including bauxite, to Russia, and has sanctioned about 1,000 Russian individuals and entities. Australia's center-left Labor government this year labelled Russia as the aggressor in the conflict and called for the war to be resolved on Kyiv's terms.

ICC judges reject Israel's request to withdraw Netanyahu arrest warrant

Judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on Wednesday rejected Israel's request to withdraw arrest warrants against its prime minister and former defense minister while the ICC reviews Israeli challenges to its jurisdiction over the conduct of the Gaza war. In a decision published on the ICC website, judges also rejected an Israeli request to suspend the wider ICC investigation into alleged atrocity crimes in the Palestinian Territories. Reuters

Israel warns Syria to 'leave the Druze' alone

Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, on Wednesday called on Syria to "leave the Druze in Sweida alone," after the government in Damascus sent troops to the southern region to quell unrest. "As we have made clear and warned, Israel will not abandon the Druze in Syria and will enforce the demilitarization policy we have decided on," he said in a statement. Syrian forces should withdraw, he added, and promised no let-up in Israeli military attacks until that happened, saying Israel would "raise the level of responses against the regime if the message is not understood."

Explosion followed by gunfire at military base in Somali capital

An explosion hit a military base in the Somali capital on Wednesday and was followed by gunfire, a witness said, as the al Qaeda-linked militant al-Shabaab group claimed responsibility for what it described as a suicide bomb attack. It was not immediately clear whether there were casualties from the blast at the Jale Siyad military base in Mogadishu. 'We heard a sudden blast, then gunfire inside the base as we drove past it, we could only see a huge cloud of smoke,' Ahmed Nur, a bus driver, told Reuters. In 2023, in a similar incident, a suicide bomber killed 25 soldiers at the same base. In May, a suicide bomber killed at least 10 people after targeting a queue of young recruits registering at the Damanyo military base, opposite Jale Siyad. Al-Shabaab has waged an insurgency in Somalia since 2007 and made significant advances in the countryside this year. 'A suicide bomber entered the base targeting the Western experts who train soldiers,' the militant group said in a statement, adding there were casualties, without providing any details. Reuters was not able to verify the group's claims. Defense Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi did not immediately respond to calls for comment. A new African Union peacekeeping mission in Somalia replaced a larger force at the start of this year, but its funding is uncertain, with the United States opposed to a plan to transition to a UN financing model.
