Brilliant racing at Glorious Goodwood

Aiden O'Brien saddles top stayer Illinois on opening day. There will be plenty of thrilling action at Goodwood Racecourse this week. Picture:Goodwood in England – regarded as the most scenically beautiful racecourse in the world – hosts its famous Glorious Goodwood festival this week: over five days with three Group 1 contests. One of the headliners is the Goodwood Cup, which tops Tuesday's opening card and has attracted a small but elite field of eight stayers. The world's top trainer Aidan O'Brien won the Cup last year with the popular Kyprios and tries to strike again with Illinois (2.37) and Scandinavia (3.40) – who head the market from French Master (6.00). A competitive Chesterfield Cup opens proceedings and Castle Cove (4.33) and Defiance (4.50) are expected to fight it out. Team Valor International's colours, well known in South Africa, will be carried by Take Heart (12.00). Wednesday contains a showstopper in the form of the Sussex Stakes, which sees the best of the current Classic generation clash with the older stars. Six Group 1 winners are expected to line up, with Royal Ascot and Irish Guineas winner – and huge fan favourite – Field Of Gold (odds on), trained by John and Thady Gosden, heading the three-year-old contingent. Rosallion (4.50), who was odds-on for the race last year before being ruled out at the 11th hour, could prove the big grey's toughest challenge yet. Ballydoyle will be represented by Classic winner Henri Matisse (6.00), while Docklands (22.00) adds yet more depth to the field after his Queen Anne triumph last month. Glorious Goodwood is one of the most stylish race meetings in the world, with Panama hats, linen suits and summery frocks the unofficial fashion look. The racecourse is laid out in a curious loop along a ridge overlooking the beautiful Sussex downs. All of this makes for pleasurable TV viewing as one punts away.

'I'm begging him to work with me again...' Stephanie Leonidas wants new project with Nick Love following Marching Powder

Stephanie Leonidas is "begging to work" with Nick Love again after starring in Marching Powder. The 41-year-old actress played Dani Jones the wife of Danny Dyer's ageing football hooligan character Jack Jones who is given one last chance at couples therapy to save his marriage in Lowe's modern day rom-com. Stephanie cannot praise writer-and-director Nick enough and she is ready for a role in his next project, whatever that may be. In an exclusive interview with BANG Showbiz, she said: "I'm begging him to work with me again! "I love Nick, I love working with him, I love his comedy. "I think Nick wrote really well for her [Dani], I had some great one liners. "Some of the scenes just slid off the page like butter, it felt so easy to say Nick's lines. "Nick is an incredible writer and he's an incredible director. He brings so much to the set. He really listens as well. He lets you bring whatever you want to bring to the character. It was such a pleasure working with him. "Obviously, there was the football element, there was the violence, in it. But the relationship was something new that Nick wanted to really shine through this one. It's very much a rom-com. "The world needed it, something a bit outrageous, a but cheeky, a little bit on the nose. It was good timing." Stephanie had auditioned for parts in Nick's previous movies, which include The Football Factory, The Business and film version of The Sweeney, based on the 1970s police drama series of the same name, with no success. Leonidas was looking for a role that brought her back to her "London roots" after having main roles in sci-fi series Defiance and mystery drama American Gothic, and was delighted when she got cast as Dani after running her lines with Dyer. She revealed: "I've tried working with Nick for many years, actually. I auditioned for a few of his films. And I was like, 'One day I will work with him.' And then this came up. This character just blew me away, because it was everything I'd wanted. "I've been working in the States a lot, I've been working in Canada a lot, doing American accents, I really wanted to get back to my London roots ... I wanted to play a Londoner again. This came up and I just worked my arse off when I auditioned for him. I got in the room with Danny and just had so much fun, I was over the moon to get the part." Stephanie - who was born in Westminster, London - says going to work each day on Marching Powder was incredible fun and she enjoyed the amount of foul language she got to use playing Dani. She said: "As you can imagine it was one of those sets where it was just so much fun everyday. There wasn't a day where we had such a laugh. "Nick is passionate about what he does, but you never feel pressured on set, you always feel you're going on such a fun set, it feels like a hobby, not a job. Because they set that standard every department feels the same, it trickles down. It was probably the most fun I've had on set, for sure. Where else do you get to say the C-word as many times I have? It's brilliant, it's such an excuse to go nuts. "Whose not passionate about the C-word?" Marching Powder is available now on digital, DVD and Blu-ray now.

Ground crucial for Defiance's John Smith's Cup bid

The Roger Varian-trained four-year-old missed the second half of last season after successive runs on fast ground at Lingfield and York and he will not be asked to race on quick surfaces in the future. 'He's a lovely horse who had his problems last year, he got very jarred up in the Lingfield Derby Trial and we couldn't really get him back,' said Harry Herbert of Highclere Thoroughbred Racing, who own the gelding. 'We had to give him a lot of time and he's come back this year in really good shape, had a run at Epsom where he could have been a bit closer but he was just caught too far back. 'I think he's come on again for that run according to Roger, but we will take a look at the ground. If it's rattling quick we won't run and will wait until Goodwood. It looks like it is going to be hot up there but we'll see where we are the day before. 'It will be Roger's call but the horse is in great form, he looks fantastic and he's well thought of. We've not seen anything like the best of this horse yet, so it will be disappointing if he can't run as this has been his target for such a long time.' Karl Burke's course-and-distance winner Thunder Run has been left at the head of the weights following a host of withdrawals at the five-day stage, which included ante-post favourite Burrito. William Haggas' Archivist sits alongside Defiance in the new market with Arabian Force, See That Storm, Hand Of God and Naqeeb others in the mix
