‘KL Rahul is a very good note-taker': Nasser Hussain reveals India opener's England tour preps during IPL 2025
India opener KL Rahul's admirable stoicism stood in the way of England after the visitors were reduced to 0/2 in the first innings, following the highest-ever total at Old Trafford in their first essay. Steered by centuries from Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes, England piled on 669 to take a massive 311-run first-innings lead, which put India in danger of an innings defeat on an overcast evening in Manchester. Worst fears for Indian fans seemed to turn into a reality when seamer Chris Woakes dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan for ducks in the opening over. However, a solid Rahul and skipper Shubman Gill stubbed England's chances of making further inroads on Day 4 as the duo batted out two sessions on Saturday. Rahul and Gill became the first pair to bat throughout two sessions in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series and also recorded the first instance of a 150-plus partnership for the third wicket in history, after the team had found themselves two wickets down for no score. Former England captain Nasser Hussain praised Rahul's methodical approach to batting and preparation as he recorded his first 500-plus run series across his 11-year Test career. The Karnataka batter has ranked among the most successful opening batters ever in England and has already moved up the charts as India's fourth-highest run-scorer in the country, surpassing Virat Kohli. "Great character shown" 💪 Ravi Shastri on KL Rahul and Shubman Gill 🏏 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) July 26, 2025 'I spoke to him in India when I went out. He was doing his shoot with one of his sponsors. I asked, 'When will you start preparing?' He said, 'I'm going to get my little book out'. He's a very good note-taker; he said he will look back at the notes he made on the previous tour of England and come early and just remind himself of what he did in the last tour when he had some success. And he has repeated it on this tour,' Nasser said. After his IPL 2025 campaign with the Delhi Capitals ended on May 24, Rahul flew to England to feature in the preparatory match against England Lions, scoring 116 and 51 in the two innings. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar also lauded the steely partnership between Rahul and Gill. 'Brilliant. Hats off to KL Rahul first because he was like a security blanket for India. He didn't put a foot wrong. Shubman Gill had some issues to begin with. A bit lucky with the dropped catch. But post-tea, the kind of avatar that we saw of Shubman Gill, is just something that has bowled me over. The kind of mental reserve and grit that they show match after match. You have to take you hats off to these batters,' he said on ESPNcricinfo. The duo will return to bat on the final day with India placed at 174/2, still trailing England by 137 runs.

KL Rahul Missing Daughter, Gets Emotional On Air: 'Was Really Hard To Come Here'
Last Updated: KL Rahul got emotional on camera while speaking about his daughter Evaarah and missing his father duties for the India-England series. Senior India batter KL Rahul got emotional on air while speaking about his newborn daughter, Evaarah, on Friday (July 25) on the sidelines of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Evaarah was born on March 24, when Rahul was on leave during IPL 2025, but he rejoined Delhi Capitals only two days later and then came to England in early June, just days after the tournament was concluded. He has enjoyed a good run in the five-Test series, scoring 421 runs, including two centuries, at an average of 60.14. However, off the field, staying in England without his wife, actress Athiya Shetty, and young family hasn't been easy. He said joining the India 'A' squad for a tour game against England Lions before the Test series was a difficult decision to make, too. 'Yeah, it's a great time in my life for my family," Rahul told former teammate Cheteshwar Pujara on the Sony Sports broadcast. 'I've always loved children. I've always wanted children for a long time. So, made me and my family really really happy. We're in a great place. She's a beautiful little girl. It's brought so much happiness into our lives," he added. 'I have done a little bit (father duties), but unfortunately, two days after she was born, I had to go play the IPL game. And I tried in whatever breaks we got during the IPL to go back for a couple of days and then finish the IPL. It was really hard to take that decision to come here and play that India A game as well because I had not spent any time with her and I knew when I came here, I won't see her for another two months," Rahul said. The tour concludes on August 4 after the final Test and as of now, there's nothing scheduled for India in the month. Rahul said that he's always on the 'baby camera' watching his daughter and is glad to have the support of his family in this time. 'There were some really hard decisions that I've had to make in the last few months. But yeah, I thought that that was the right thing to do for me professionally and my family's been really supportive. My wife was very supportive. So, I came here. So, I haven't seen her and I just keep seeing her pictures and I'm always on the baby camera. Making sure I don't miss anything or any part of her growth. So, it's a difficult thing to do when you're traveling and playing and you miss each day," he said. India are traling the five-Test series 2-1 and are in a precarious position in the fourth Test with England leading by 186 runs at the end of the third day at Old Trafford. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 23:41 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Rishabh Pant hardly put his foot on the ground': Ricky Ponting says injury 'doesn't look good at all' for India
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who observed Rishabh Pant from close quarters during his stint as the head coach with the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said the left-handed batter's injury doesn't 'look good' for the visitors, and the immediate swelling on his foot has him really worried. The southpaw got injured on Day 1 of the Manchester Test while trying to go for a reverse sweep off the bowling of Chris Woakes. Rishabh Pant being assisted by a physio after an injury on day one of the fourth Test. (PTI) Pant was batting on 37 when the incident happened. Off the bowling of Woakes, Pant went for a reverse sweep, but he only managed to inside edge the ball onto his foot. He survived the LBW appeal and the subsequent DRS from England. However, he was in immediate pain as the physio came charging out. Pant was unable to stand properly and had to be taken off the field in a golf cart-like vehicle. The wicketkeeper-batter also visited the hospital, and reports are awaited. At this stage, it looks unlikely that Pant will take any further part in the contest. 'He hardly put his foot on the ground. He rolled around for 6-8 minutes before the golf cart came in. The immediate swelling was the worry for me. I've had a metatarsal injury myself, and they're small, fragile bones,' said Ponting on Sky Sports. If it's broken, he will be out of the game. If it's not, then they will do anything they can to get him back out there. Hopefully, he doesn't play any more reverse sweeps,' he added. 'Massive dent on India's chance' At stumps on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, India's score read 264/4 with Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur at the crease. Ponting feels India will surely miss Pant's absence if he is to play no further part in the match or the series. 'Thinking about the situation of the game as well, Shardul has come out and played nicely, but with the way Rishabh plays and the momentum he brings to the Indian team, that is what they will potentially miss the most. Someone who can put the pressure on the opposition,' said Ponting. 'For Indian fans, keep fingers crossed and hope it is not as serious as it looks. If he is out of the remainder of the game, then that leaves a massive dent on India's chance, not only in this game, but the remainder of the series,' he added. After the close of play on Day 1, the BCCI issued an update on Pant, saying the wicketkeeper-batter is 'being monitored' by the Medical Team after undergoing scans at the hospital. Further details are awaited.

Rishabh Pant Injury Update: Suspected 'Metatarsal Fracture' Could Rule Him Out For...
India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant once again found himself in the medical room after being hit on the right boot. Pant started off the Manchester Test in trademark style, hitting his unorthodox shots to put the pressure on England on Wednesday. However, Pant's latest dashing display was cut short while he was batting on a score of 37. The wicketkeeper inside-edged an audacious reverse sweep off Chris Woakes ' yorker on to his right boot. When the shoe was taken off, the foot was swollen and bruised. Pant, who usually is seen as a man with a high pain threshold, couldn't continue and had to be taken off on a golf cart by the medical team. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri painted a grim picture over Pant's situation, saying the injury does look very serious. "Just seeing his face, grimacing there. He has a pain threshold that's very high, and for him to be grimacing in pain in that fashion makes it very serious. It can only get worse overnight," Shastri said on Sky Sports. "When you get up in the morning, it can be really sore, no matter the amount of ice you put. He will be icing it through the night. Let's hope it's not a break or it's not a crack," he added. Ricky Ponting Keeping Fingers Crossed Australia great Ricky Ponting, who worked with Rishabh Pant closely in the Indian Premier League with the Delhi Capitals, suspected a metatarsal injury as there was immediate swelling on the foot. If the foot is indeed broken, Pant feels Pant could be out for the entire game. "He hardly put his foot on the ground. He rolled around for 6-8 minutes before the golf cart came in. The immediate swelling was the worry for me. I've had a metatarsal injury myself, and they're small, fragile bones," said Ponting. "The fact that he couldn't put any weight on it doesn't look good at all. If it's broken, he will be out of the game. If it's not, then they will do anything they can to get him back out there. Hopefully, he doesn't play any more reverse sweeps," he added. "Thinking about the situation of the game as well, Shardul has come out and played nicely, but with the way Rishabh plays and the momentum he brings to the Indian team, that is what they will potentially miss the most. Someone who can put the pressure on the opposition," said Ponting. "For Indian fans, keep fingers crossed and hope it is not as serious as it looks. If he is out of the remainder of the game, then that leaves a massive dent on India's chance, not only in this game, but the remainder of the series," he added. England great Michael Atherton also shared his views on Pant's injury, suggesting the wicket-keeper batter could be out for the remainder of the series, as it does look like quite a serious injury. "If he is out of the he's out of the series, then that's a massive blow to India and puts the day in a different light. That 264 for four becomes 264 for five, and with that new ball due, there is a potential to knock India over reasonably swiftly tomorrow. But if he returns to bat, he could change the game. So there is an uncertainty which we don't know. But it looked like a quite serious injury, because you don't get carted off otherwise," he said.
