Over 2,300 men fined for entering women-only coaches in Delhi Metro in 2024-25

NEW DELHI: More than 2,300 male passengers were fined for entering women-only coaches in the Delhi Metro during the fiscal year 2024–25, according to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Officials said 2,320 challans were issued under the Delhi Metro Railway Operation and Maintenance Act, each attracting a fine of `250. The highest number of violations were reported in May (443), followed by April (419) and September (397). Interestingly, only one offender was penalised in December 2024. In cases where violators are unable to pay the fine immediately, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) or DMRC flying squad personnel issue a warning and allow them to leave. 'These drives are conducted in close coordination with CISF teams stationed across the metro network,' a DMRC official said. To tackle the issue, DMRC has launched multiple awareness campaigns. These include regular announcements on platforms and inside trains, prominent signage indicating the location of women-only coaches, and social media posts on DMRC's official handles. Additionally, flying squads have been deployed to monitor such violations and take necessary action. 'Our aim is to ensure a safer and more respectful environment for female passengers. These checks and sensitisation drives will continue,' the official added. The Delhi Metro, with its 10 colour-coded lines and 257 stations, covers a network of nearly 395 km. Each train typically consists of six or eight coaches, with one reserved exclusively for women. Recently, a video went viral showing male passengers occupying the ladies' coach and refusing to leave despite repeated requests by female commuters, highlighting the ongoing challenge despite existing regulations.

American Woman Reveals 10 Ways India Changed Her Life: 'Since Coming Here...'

An American woman living has gone viral on social media after she shared a list of ways in which her life had changed since coming to India four years ago. Content creator Kristen Fischer took to her Instagram to share a video, listing 10 reasons for the transformation as she adapted to Indian culture. Ms Fischer said these changes, which included turning vegetarian, learning to cook Indian food and bargaining whilst shopping, had enriched her life. In the video, she could be seen enjoying her stay in the country with her daughters, wearing sarees as well as riding the Delhi Metro. Here are the 10 things Ms Fischer listed in her viral video: I have learned to cook many different types of Indian food. In the USA I never used public transportation, everyone just has their own car. But in India, I use it all the time. I have started to wear Indian clothes. I love the fashions and the feel of the clothes here. No more week-old I buy fresh and locally sourced food from street vendors. I became a vegetarian, and it is surprisingly easy here. India offers so much variety to vegetarian food. I drive a scooter. In the USA scooters are actually illegal on most roads so nobody uses them. One of the most notable changes I made after coming to India was learning to speak Hindi. I send my kids to a private school in India and I believe they are getting a great education. I go bargain shopping at outdoor markets. I love the feeling of bargaining prices and getting good deals on things. I have fully adapted to the jet spray and, let me tell you, I am never going back. "Ruskin Bond came from England and stayed in India. Has written so much. You are the new Ruskin Bond," said one user while another added: "Cheers to you for making the transition in India joyfully and absorbing the culture with positivity." A third commented: "Thanks for all the respect you've shown for our country." In a previous video, Ms Fischer, a mother of four, said she does not "regret" her decision to set base in India, where she has met incredible people and seen amazing places. "We moved our family to India 4 years ago and haven't regretted it a bit. In these past 4 years I have met some amazing people, seen some incredible places, had some awesome food, and changed my heart forever," said Ms Fischer.

‘Stop, play, pause': Over 12k nuisance cases in 2 years as DMRC battles reel-ity check in trains

Delhi Metro has witnessed over 12,000 cases of unacceptable behavior in the last two years, including making reels, littering, and misbehaving with staff. DMRC recorded 6,169 nuisance cases in 2024-25 and 6,183 in 2023-24, along with hundreds of unlawful entries. NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man was arrested in April for creating a ruckus inside a Delhi Metro train by drinking alcohol and eating eggs. It eventually turned out it was only in pretence in an attempt to go viral on social media. It is not the lone instance. Delhi Metro has recorded over 12,000 cases of unacceptable behaviour in the past two years. Botherations include passengers making reels, littering, quarrelling and misbehaving with train staff. The latest Delhi Metro Rail Corporation data shows 6,169 cases of nuisance in the 2024-25 financial year and 6,183 in 2023-24, most of them falling under Section 59 of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi Apart from such nuisance, the network also recorded 745 cases in 2024-25 of unlawful entry and walking on metro tracks, prohibited under Section 64 of the DMRC Act. The number of such cases was 1,043 in 2023-24. In the past few years, there has been a spate of videos on social media showing passengers recording reels inside the trains and at stations, causing inconvenience to other commuters. "DMRC expects its commuters to behave responsibly while using the Delhi Metro and follow all social etiquette and protocols that are acceptable in society," said Anuj Dayal, principal executive director, corporate communications, DMRC. "Commuters should also follow prevalent dos and don'ts while travelling by metro for their own and co-passengers' safety, comfort and convenience. They shouldn't indulge in any activity that is against the rules and regulations. " Dayal said that from time to time, DMRC launched special awareness drives on this matter. "Offenders are liable for penalty or removal from the metro train under the Operations & Maintenance Act," he added. Though DMRC has been running campaigns and displaying messages at metro stations like 'do not make reels and cause discomfort', unsavoury incidents continue to be reported. DMRC has been appealing to commuters to inform them when they notice unruly or prohibited behaviour in the trains rather than make videos of the incidents. "Commuters should inform the train operator if they spot anything objectionable or anyone creating a nuisance inside a train," a metro official said. "Security or DMRC staff at the next arriving station will immediately take necessary action. Passengers can also seek help at the helpline number 155370." In an effort to disseminate information in a creative manner, DMRC has used terms familiar to reel makers to educate them. Signboards saying 'STOP making reels', 'don't PLAY loud music in metro premises' and 'PAUSE - let passengers deboard first' are prominently displayed on platforms or at concourse levels across the network.

Trial runs have been completed and the final decision on opening the station to the public now rests with the state government, a TOI report stated.'The final touches are being given to the station,' said an official from the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), which is building the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. The Sarai Kale Khan hub will connect RRTS with the Delhi Metro's Pink Line, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Veer Haqeeqat Rai inter-state bus terminal, and city bus services.'The Namo Bharat station here has been designed in a way to ensure seamless integration with all modes of public transport,' the official added.A skywalk has been built to link the RRTS station with Nizamuddin Railway Station and the metro. Gate No. 4 will provide access to Ring Road. A pedestrian bridge with travellators connects the station to the railway station and the skywalk, helping passengers and pedestrians move safely and quickly across the transport station includes designated areas for pick-up and drop-off by buses and four-wheelers. A separate drop-off zone beneath the station box can hold over 40 vehicles. There is also a 5.5-metre-wide lane for taxis and a 7.5-metre-wide lane for city buses. Parking is available for 275 cars and 900 two-wheelers.'Over the years, passengers at Sarai Kale Khan have faced difficulties while changing between the different modes of transport, encountering heavy crowds, disorderly traffic, and considerable distances to reach other transport facilities,' the official explained.'The elderly, women, and children among the travellers frequently encounter risks to their safety when crossing busy roads. This situation has led many to opt for personal vehicles, resulting in traffic congestion, environmental pollution, and extended journey durations. As a consequence, the efficiency of public transport networks is reduced. The skywalk and drop-off zones design will, therefore, ensure seamless connectivity for pedestrians to all transport terminals in the vicinity.'Sarai Kale Khan is the largest station in the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor. It has six platforms and four tracks for Namo Bharat trains. To manage high footfall, NCRTC has built five entry and exit gates, along with multiple staircases, lifts and escalators. The station is 215 metres long, 50 metres wide and 15 metres high, with 14 lifts and 18 escalators. Universal access has been provided at all station will also serve as the point of convergence for all three RRTS corridors being developed under Phase 1 — Delhi-Panipat-Karnal, Delhi-SNB-Alwar and Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut. 'This interoperability will allow passengers to travel between corridors without changing trains,' the official Namo Bharat services operate between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi and Meerut South. The entire 82-km-long corridor is nearly complete and expected to open soon.'Namo Bharat is fast emerging as the preferred and reliable mode of transit for commuters across the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor. Offering a safe, fast, and convenient travel experience in every season, Namo Bharat is steadily gaining the trust of passengers seeking efficient regional connectivity. This growing confidence is reflected in the consistent increase in ridership, recently crossing the milestone of 1.25 crore rides,' the official added.
