Year before retirement, traffic cop gets 4-year jail for bribery

New Delhi: A court sentenced a Delhi Traffic Police officer, who was just a year short of retirement, to four years in jail for taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a driver. The court of special judge Deepali Sharma observed, "Corruption is one of the most significant barriers in the growth of the country. The PC (Prevention of Corruption) Act was formulated to bring about transparency and honesty in public life and to combat corruption in govt departments. " The court was hearing a case against assistant sub-inspector Yatender Kumar, who was posted at a traffic police booth at Pul Mithai Chowk, at the time of the incident. He was convicted on June 4 under Prevention of Corruption Act for demanding and obtaining gratification other than legal remuneration—bribes—from a man in lieu of releasing his impounded vehicle in Sept 2022. Kumar requested the court for leniency, citing his age of 59 years and that he was the sole breadwinner of his family, as well as his clean antecedents. The judge noted that Kumar abused his position in public office for his personal gain. "Considering the ramifications of the offence and the victimisation of the public at large, and also considering the impact of the offence on society, the convict does not deserve any leniency from the court," the judge said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Good News: You May Be Richer Than You Think Undo Opposing Kumar's plea, the prosecution submitted before the court that corruption was a menace to society and needed to be eradicated to restore the faith of people in good governance, as it adversely affected the progress of the country and corroded the entire system. Hence, no leniency should be shown to the convict, the prosecution argued. TNN

‘Corruption significant barrier in country's growth': Court awards 4-year jail to traffic cop for bribe worth Rs 3,000

Observing that 'corruption is one of the most significant barriers in the growth of the country', a court here has sentenced a Delhi Traffic Police officer, who is just a year short of his retirement, to four years in prison for taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from a driver. 'Corruption is one of the most significant barriers in the growth of the country. The PC (prevention of corruption) act was formulated to bring about transparency and honesty in public life and to combat corruption in government departments,' said Special Judge Deepali Sharma of Rouse Avenue Court in her order dated June 6. Assistant Sub Inspector Yatender Kumar, who was posted at Delhi Traffic Police booth, Pul Mithai Chowk, at the time of the incident was convicted on June 4 under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act for 'demanding and obtaining gratification other than legal remuneration' (bribes) from a man in lieu of releasing his impounded vehicle in September 2022. During arguments on his sentence, his counsel had argued for leniency, citing his age of 59 years. The fact that he was the sole bread earner of his family was also stated as were his 'clean antecedents'. The prosecution, however, said that Kumar's acts could not be 'trivialised'. It was also argued that corruption is a menace to society, which needs to be eradicated 'to restore the faith of people in good governance'. '…the convict has been stated to have clean antecedents and the prosecution has not shown any previous criminal record of the convict. Convict is about 59 years of age and has a wife to support, being sole bread earner of his family. Considering the circumstances in entirety, the convict has been awarded the minimum sentence as provided under Section 7 and Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988,' said Judge Sharma while awarding a four-year jail term to Kumar. The maximum punishment possible under the PC Act is seven years of imprisonment.

Bakrid celebrations: what the Delhi Police's detailed advisory says on sacrifice locations, waste disposal

As Bakrid or Eid al-Adha is celebrated across the Capital on Saturday, authorities in Delhi have issued detailed advisories aimed at ensuring a peaceful and responsible celebration of the festival. Abhishek Dhaniya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Delhi, highlighted the efforts on social media. Earlier, the Delhi Police shared a detailed advisory on Tuesday. It emphasised responsible celebration, compassion, and public order during Eid al-Adha, which is a symbol of sacrifice, unity, and devotion. Monsoon ready: Delhi Traffic Police gears up with ground action and tech integration

By Anamika Tiwari New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): As Delhi braces for the upcoming monsoon season, the Delhi Traffic Police have rolled out a proactive strategy to tackle long-standing issues of waterlogging, traffic congestion, and road safety. With multiple city agencies coming together, the police are strengthening their preparedness across all fronts. 'We are trying to do much better this year than before,' said Shashank Jaiswal, DCP Traffic Headquarters, while outlining the department's detailed monsoon plan and city-wide initiatives. According to Jaiswal, last year's waterlogging trouble spots have been thoroughly identified, and ground teams, along with officers, are actively inspecting these locations for potential risk. The department is working in close coordination with key civic agencies such as the PWD and NDMC. Letters have already been sent to all concerned authorities to initiate joint preparations well ahead of the rains. This year, the focus is not just on response but on early identification and coordinated prevention. Jaiswal also highlighted the challenge of accident blackspots across the city, calling it a variable issue. 'Some areas witness frequent accidents, while others are prone to fatal ones. We try to eliminate the root causes. For example, if a pedestrian crossing is missing, we collaborate with the relevant agencies to resolve it,' he said. While there isn't a fixed number of blackspots, the Traffic Engineering Department and the Road Safety Department are monitoring them regularly. The team also responds to public complaints and emergency calls in real time to resolve emerging safety issues. To ease congestion in the capital, the Delhi Traffic Police are counting on the upcoming rollout of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). 'This system will help reduce the amount of time vehicles spend at red lights by adjusting signal timing based on real-time traffic flow. We're also looking at improving road safety by ensuring clear lines of sight at intersections to prevent accidents,' Jaiswal said. When asked about accountability and internal discipline, Jaiswal affirmed a strict approach. 'Whenever there are complaints against any official, we take strict action. At the same time, we also motivate our staff to avoid such behaviour. In serious cases, we proceed with dismissals,' he said, emphasising that integrity remains a top priority. 'We've deployed motorcycles for faster response, and our control room is constantly monitoring traffic jams in coordination with field teams to resolve them quickly,' the DCP said. Recognising the pressures of field duty, the department is also prioritising the well-being of its personnel. Yoga sessions and counselling are now part of the routine to keep staff mentally and physically fit. 'We're also running regular training programs to improve their skills and readiness,' Jaiswal said. As the city prepares for the monsoon, the Delhi Traffic Police's comprehensive approach, from infrastructure mapping and tech integration to staff welfare, aims to make commutes safer and smoother. Commuters are advised to stay updated with traffic advisories and plan their journeys accordingly. (ANI)

'We are going to initiate regular road safety audits to point out defects in road engineering and lighting, and coordinate with certain civic agencies like the Public Works Department to reduce accidents in the area. We are also in the process of writing to district DCPs to help reduce fatal accident numbers near black spots,' Special CP (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhary said. Additional CP (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Gupta said regular awareness campaigns would also be undertaken near these black spots, which will focus on speeding and safety measures.
