Worker critical after US immigration raid on California farm
CAMARILLO, US: A farm worker was in critical condition on Friday, his family said, after being injured during a raid by US immigration agents on a legal cannabis farm in California that resulted in the arrests of 200 undocumented migrants and clashes with protesters. President Donald Trump, meanwhile, called demonstrators involved in attacks on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents 'slimeballs' and said they should be arrested. In another development, a district judge ordered a halt to 'roving patrols' in Los Angeles by federal agents who were detaining suspected undocumented migrants without probable cause and denying them due process. District Judge Maame Ewusi-Mensah Frimpong ordered an end to the arrests, which she said were being made 'based upon race alone,' on whether a person was speaking Spanish or English with an accent or because of their place of work. Trump's remarks and the court order come a day after a chaotic raid on a cannabis plantation in Ventura County some 56 miles (90 kilometers) from Los Angeles left one farm worker critically injured. The United Farm Workers labor union had said in an X post on Friday that the worker had 'died of injuries they sustained as a result of yesterday's immigration enforcement action.' But the family on a GoFundMe page said he was in critical condition and unlikely to survive. 'He was chased by ICE agents, and we were told he fell 30ft (9 meters). My uncle's life is in critical condition; doctors have told us he won't make it. His injuries are catastrophic. His heart is still beating.' The Ventura County Medical Center, which told ABC News that he was in critical condition, did not respond to AFP calls for more details. Tricia McLaughlin, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman, said he was never in custody. 'Although he was not being pursued by law enforcement, this individual climbed up to the roof of a green house and fell 30 feet,' McLaughlin said. '(Customs and Border Patrol) immediately called a medivac to the scene to get him care as quickly as possible.' The DHS said 200 undocumented migrants were arrested during raids on marijuana growing sites in Carpinteria and Camarillo on Thursday and 10 children were rescued 'from potential exploitation, forced labor, and human trafficking.' 'I am giving Total Authorization for ICE to protect itself, just like they protect the Public,' he said. Trump, who campaigned on a pledge to deport millions of migrants, has been involved in a showdown over immigration enforcement with Democratic-ruled California for weeks. The Republican president sent thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles last month to quell protests against roundups of undocumented migrants by federal agents. California Governor Gavin Newsom has said the troops were not necessary to address the mostly peaceful protests, but his legal efforts to have them removed have failed so far. The cannabis farm in Camarillo was calm during a visit by an AFP reporter on Friday as workers waited in line to collect their belongings and paychecks. 'We've been here since six this morning asking questions but they're not giving us any information,' said Saul Munoz, a 43-year-old Colombian whose son was detained on Thursday. 'I just want to know how he's doing,' Munoz said. 'Bring him back to me and if it's time for us to leave, we'll leave. 'The truth is the American dream is no longer really the American dream.' — AFP

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, condemned attacks by the demonstrators on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents and other members of law enforcement and said "these slimeballs" should be arrested. Trump's remarks on X came a day after a chaotic raid on a cannabis plantation in Ventura County some 90 kilometres from Los Angeles that left one farm worker critically injured. The United Farm Workers said in a post on X on Friday that the worker had "died of injuries they sustained as a result of yesterday's immigration enforcement action." The union did not identify the worker, who reportedly suffered a 10-metre fall during Thursday's raid. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said 200 undocumented migrants were arrested during raids on marijuana grow sites in Carpinteria and Camarillo on Thursday and 10 children were rescued "from potential exploitation, forced labor, and human trafficking." Glass House Brands, which owns the farms, said in a statement that it has "never knowingly violated applicable hiring practices and does not and has never employed minors." The company said it was providing legal representation to detained workers. DHS said more than 500 "rioters" had attempted to disrupt the operation and four US citizens are facing charges for assaulting or resisting officers. Tear gas was used against the protestors, some of whom were seen in television footage throwing projectiles at law enforcement vehicles. The department said immigration agency vehicles were damaged and a US$50,000 reward was being offered for the arrest of an individual who allegedly fired a gun at law enforcement officers. In his post on X, Trump said he had watched footage of "thugs" throwing rocks and bricks at ICE vehicles, causing "tremendous damage." Trump said law enforcement officers who are "on the receiving end of thrown rocks, bricks, or any other form of assault, (are authorized) to stop their car, and arrest these SLIMEBALLS, using whatever means is necessary to do so." Justice Dept sues California over transgender athletes
WASHINGTON — The United States Justice Department filed a lawsuit against California on Wednesday for allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls sports. Female student athletes in California are being subjected to "unfair competition and reckless endangerment by male participation on female high-school sports teams," the department said. The lawsuit accuses California of violating Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funding. The Justice Department suit is the latest salvo in a showdown between the administration of Republican President Donald Trump and the Democratic-ruled state. Trump sent thousands of National Guard troops to Los Angeles last month to quell protests against roundups of undocumented migrants by federal agents. California Governor Gavin Newsom has said the troops were not necessary to address the mostly peaceful protests, but his legal efforts to have them removed have failed so far. Trump threatened last month to impose "large scale" fines against California after a transgender high school athlete's victory at the state track and field championships. The Justice Department suit accuses the California Department of Education and California Interscholastic Federation of engaging in "illegal sex discrimination against female student athletes by allowing males to compete against them." "The Governor of California has previously admitted that it is 'deeply unfair' to force women and girls to compete with men and boys in competitive sports," Attorney General Pam Bondi said. "But not only is it 'deeply unfair,' it is also illegal under federal law." The Justice Department sued Maine in April for allowing transgender athletes to compete in girls sports, and the Trump administration has moved to cut the northeastern state's federal funding for public schools. The Supreme Court agreed earlier this month to hear cases next term challenging state laws in Idaho and West Virginia banning transgender athletes from female competitions. More than two dozen US states have passed laws in recent years barring athletes who were assigned male at birth from taking part in girls or women's sports.

Trump Threatens Federal Takeover Of New York City, Washington. Here's Why
Washington: US President Donald Trump has threatened a federal takeover of two Democratic-ruled states--New York City and Washington, DC--if local leaderships do not align with his administration's vision. Speaking during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Tuesday, the President said his administration will seize control of New York City if "communist" Zohran Mamdani is elected mayor in the November polls. Trump's team is considering taking over governance of the capital, Washington, as it serves as the seat of the federal government. The Republican said his chief of staff, Susie Wiles, was in close touch with Washington's elected mayor, Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, over the administrative control of the city. Take Over Of New York Talking about the New York administration, Trump attacked Indian-origin Democratic socialist Mamdani, saying America's most popular city will never be the same if a "communist" runs it. "We're not going to have -- if a communist gets elected to run New York, it can never be the same. But we have tremendous power at the White House to run places when we have to," Trump said, without elaborating on what authority that would be. "We're going to do something for New York. I can't tell you what yet, but we're going to make New York great again. Also, we're going to make it great again with the country." Mamdani has been in Trump's line of fire since he edged ahead of the other contenders, including current mayor Eric Adams, Andrew Cuomo, to become the Democratic nominee for New York's mayoral election. Trump said Mamdani was "not very capable" of running New York, in his opinion. "He's a disaster ... He's got the Democrat nomination because that shows you where the Democrats have gone. He actually wants to take over the grocery stores of John Catsimatidis," Trump said, referring to the Gristedes chief. Trump also railed against the city's ranked-choice voting and described his relationship with Mayor Adams as a "test." Washington Takeover Plans Turning his focus to the nation's capital, Trump reiterated his long-standing criticism of local Democratic governance, claiming Washington was plagued by crime and inefficiency. "We could run DC. We're looking at DC. We don't want crime in DC. We want the city to run well," he said. "We're thinking about doing it, to be honest with you. We want a capital that's run flawlessly, and it wouldn't be hard for us to do it, and we've had a good relationship with the mayor [Muriel Bowser], and we're testing it to see if it works." Trump has long called for the federal takeover of Washington--which has been self-governing since 1973--arguing the city was riddled with crime. However, data from the Metropolitan Police Department shows violent crimes in the city are down 25 per cent from this time last year, and all crime is down 8 per cent. The District of Columbia has partial autonomy under the 1973 Home Rule Act, which grants residents the authority to elect a mayor and city council members to manage affairs. But the district's laws and budget are overseen by Congress.
