In the Fray of Divisive Elections, Young Voices Bring Hope

このページを 日本語 で読む Several political parties and candidates in the House of Councillors (upper house) elections held on July 20 promoted slogans like "zero illegal foreigners" and "Japanese First." It may well be the first time in Japan's modern national elections that such statements — seen by some as xenophobic — have been so widely and openly expressed. As is well known, in many Western countries, conservative-leaning parties advocating "citizens first" policies have made major gains. Some nations have even begun enforcing the removal of undocumented foreign residents. The rise of similar rhetoric in Japan may be part of a global trend that has gained momentum may be part of a longer global trend punctuated by the election of United States President Donald Trump and his "America First" doctrine. At the time of writing this column, the results of the Upper House election were not yet known. However, even before the vote, comments emerged from within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that could be interpreted as an apparent admission of defeat. Voters listen to a campaign street speech on July 5 in Saitama Prefecture. (©Sankei by Naoki Aikawa) According to the Yomiuri Shimbun on July 16, LDP Public Relations Chairperson Takuya Hirai remarked that following the election, there would be "a National Diet that can't decide anything and an endless era of darkness." While Hirai is free to express such views, one must ask: who was he trying to benefit with such pessimistic remarks? He sounded more like a detached political commentator than a key figure in the ruling party during an election campaign. Even if Japan were to face a so-called "dark era" politically, that would not mean the value of Japan itself is lost in darkness. There is always hope. JAPAN Forward has consistently conveyed this sentiment in its reporting. The following essay is from the first article in our new feature series, IGNITE, launched in June. The goal of the series is to share the voices of Japanese students with the world. Through this, we hope global readers will gain deeper insight into what Japan's next generation of leaders are thinking, hoping for, and striving toward in these times. IGNITE #1: Be a Global Catalyst for Communications The first installment features winning entries from the Institute for International Business Communication (IIBC) high school English essay contest, held annually since 2009. Leading the series is an essay by Tetsu Den, then a second-year student at Ashiya Gakuen Senior High School. He won the 2023 contest's top honors: the Grand Prize and the America-Japan Society President's Award. Den, a Japanese student born to a Chinese father and a Korean mother, studied in Canada as part of a school project. He arrived in Canada feeling anxious and uncertain about his identity, but was warmly welcomed by his host father abroad. Through conversations with him, Den came to realize that what he once saw as inner conflict was actually a source of strength. Tetsu Den, winner of the Grand Prize and Japan-America Society President's Award for his English essay. Den wrote about what he learned from a homestay in Canada. (©IIBC) He captured this experience in his English essay. Upon receiving his award, he commented: "When I wrote the essay, I seriously considered how I should be as an international person from now on, and was able to recognize once again the greatness of communication between different cultures." JAPAN Forward's core readership includes Gen Z and millennial youth in Asia who are interested in Japan, as well as generations working at the center of society around the world. In today's uncertain times, we hope Japanese youth will connect with their global peers and help shape a new future. This hope is at the heart of the IGNITE project. Moving forward, IGNITE plans to feature not only IIBC participants but also students speaking out in a variety of other contexts. As written in the Bible, the world's most widely read book, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." (John 1:5). Rather than lament or criticize the intensified rhetoric around immigration seen during the Upper House elections as a "dark age," JAPAN Forward aims to create platforms where the next generation can shine and engage in constructive dialogue. We seek to work alongside them to bring light to the future. Watch for the next issue on August 18. JAPAN Forward is a small media outlet driven by an unparalleled passion to advance the future of Japan and its role in the world. What time do Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry tee off at The Open today? Day two start times and latest leaderboard from Portrush

It is the final major tournament of the year, and this is a title that many golfers grow up dreaming of winning. McIlroy, the home favourite, has realised that dream once before - in 2014, at Royal Liverpool. Now, McIlroy is trying to double his major money this calendar year and follow up his memorable Green Jacket victory at the Masters back in April. The first day saw McIlroy move himself into title contention as he put on a show for the thousands of fans who cheered his every move. Whilst far from his best off the tee, McIlroy certainly made up for it on the greens, three birdies on his front nine leaving him just two shots off the lead heading into the second day. When is Rory McIlroy playing at The Open? McIlroy will tee off at 10.09am BST this morning, Friday July 18, 2025 in his Open second round. He will be joined by Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas. Championship club auctioning off parts of iconic 20,000-capacity stadium including seats from dugouts

MILLWALL fans have the chance to buy a piece of history in a rare auction that will see parts of the Den - including dugout seats - sold. The Lions are currently in the early stages of a phased redevelopment of their stadium, the Den. 3 3 3 They eventually hope to expand the capacity of the ground from 20,000 to around 34,000 spectators, although a time scale is yet to be determined. Now, with club officials looking to continue with some of the first steps, items from the Den are being auctioned off to fans. Supporters can bid for several items from the stadium - including seats from both the home and away dugouts. They can also buy signs from around the venue and even some trophies. The 2015-16 Johnstone's Paint Trophy Team of the Round shield is available, with bidding currently at £65. A Millwall-branded trophy is also available for the same price as things stand on sportbidder. Fans also have access to signed and framed shirts and photos, all with different bids. There is even the chance to bid for items from club lounges along with stadium maps and seating plans. The auction is currently open and will close at 10am BST on July 8. Discussing the process, Luke Wilson, Millwall's Chief Commercial Officer, said: "Each lot is steeped in the history and legend of the club, but it must be every fan's dream to own one of the dugout seats. Millwall fan is beaten up by gang of Crystal Palace supporters after confronting rivals in Selhurt Park stands "Famous managers such as Neil Harris and Gary Rowett, plus popular players like Jed Wallace, Jake Cooper and Steve Morison sat on them as they watched the action on the pitch, either after coming off themselves or as they prepared to go on." He continued: "The auction provides three specific solutions for the club and the fans. "Firstly, it allows us to repurpose club property – much of it unique – in a creative way so that it is not wasted. "Secondly, it provides a unique opportunity for fans to acquire genuine Millwall FC memorabilia direct from The Den that they would otherwise not be able to get their hands on.

Kevin Nisbet hit with £5m Millwall sucker punch as ex Aberdeen star's future thrown deeper into doubt

Nisbet had been told he would be given a chance to prove his worth at the Den next season - but that stance may have changed Kevin Nisbet will be hoping to hit the ground running on his return to Millwall following his successful loan spell with Aberdeen. The Scotland striker netted 14 times in 37 matches in all competitions to finish as the Dons top scorer as Jimmy Thelin 's men put a disappointing fifth place finish in the Premiership behind them by shocking Celtic to win the Scottish Cup on penalties. ‌ However, despite claims from Millwall boss Alex Neil back in April that he intends to have a look at the player this summer, Nisbet 's chances of getting regular game time at the Den have been dealt a huge blow after the English Championship side smashed their transfer record to sign Middlesbrough forward Josh Coburn. ‌ The 22-year-old scored six goals in 25 matches in his loan spell in south-east London last season and those displays were enough to convince the Lions to fork out a transfer fee that could rise to as much as £5million for his services on a permanent basis. Nisbet returns to Millwall this summer with just a year remaining on his contract. The 28-year-old arrived in London from Hibernian in a £2m switch back in January 2023 but injuries and lack of form have seen him register just five goals in 30 matches for the club. Aberdeen supporters would love to see their top goal scorer back in the Granite City ahead of a European campaign that will last until Christmas at the earliest but are likely to find themselves priced out of a move when a transfer fee and wages are factored in. Premiership rivals Hearts have also been linked with the player, with the Jambos set to try and replace out-of-contract skipper Lawrence Shankland should he decide to move on from the capital club. Following the Dons' triumph at Hampden, Nisbet insisted his sole focus was on returning to Millwall in pre-season in order to try and make an impression on compatriot Neil. He said: "I'll be back with them pre-season. I don't really want to talk about other clubs and stuff like that. ‌ "I'll be back with them pre-season and we'll take it from there." In early April, Neil had expressed his desire to give the attacker a chance to prove his worth upon his return to The Den. ‌ When asked if he had held any discussions about the player's long-term future, former Hamilton and Norwich gaffer Neil responded: "Not particularly. "There's been discussions around the squad in general, but the simple fact is: Kevin's our player. "Steve Gallen was up watching on the weekend, so he's seen the two goals that he scored. I believe he met him after the game. "So we're still keeping tracks on all our players that are out on loan, irrespective of whether it's Kevin or anybody else. "Kevin's our player, we're glad he's doing well and he'll be back like every other player in the summer and then we'll take it from there."

Moment Dragons' Den star who was told she'd ‘amount to nothing' scores £60,000

A Dragons' Den contestant scored a whopping £60,000 investment in her business, despite previously being told she'd 'never amount to anything'. Tonight, the BBC is airing an episode from 2022 that saw former Royal Air Force member Hannah Saunders pitch her business, Toddle, which sells skincare for adventurous kids. Hannah began by explaining she joined the RAF after her parents told her she'd 'never amount to anything' and it was during her time in the armed forces that she developed a passion for adventures and travel. After becoming a mother, Hannah shared her love for the outdoors with her kids, and founded her business when she realised they had chapped lips and wind-burned cheeks. When Dragon Peter Jones asked Hannah if her parents' opinion of her had changed since she launched Toddle, she replied: 'I have no idea, they haven't spoken to me in years.' Peter replied: 'I'm devastated to hear that on your behalf.' Hannah added that it had taken 'years' and 'some therapy', but she was 'through the other side of it now'. When asked where her drive came from, Hannah said that as well as doing it for her two boys, aged three and six, 'There's a small part of me that wants to prove my parents wrong.' The Dragons were moved by Hannah's story, with Steven Bartlett telling her: 'I think you should be incredibly proud of yourself and it's made me a little bit emotional, which is quite rare.' Sara Davies added: 'My word, you are impressive. Honestly, I feel a little bit in awe of you.' Meanwhile, Deborah Meaden dubbed Hannah 'faultless', while Touker Suleyman turned to her and said: 'You've got every answer,' after she successfully fielded the Dragons' questions. Hannah received offers from three Dragons and, after a little bit of bartering, secured a joint investment of £60,000 with Steven and Deborah. She has since been dubbed the 'most prepared entrepreneur to ever enter the Den'. After striking a deal, Steven said: 'When I can't find a fault in an entrepreneur, I have no choice but to invest. And I literally couldn't find a fault.' Hannah revealed after leaving the Den: 'All I did was prepare as thoroughly as I could for the day. I really wasn't preempting any kind of reaction from them'. She added: 'To hear those kind words and to say how well I was doing is just a dream come true.' Hannah has since sold Toddle and is now the founder of Pitch Fund and Grow, a company which helps other business founders speak to investors and raise money. More Trending She is also the chief marketing officer a weServed, a platform that supports veterans, and chief growth officer at a tech startup called Nudge. Reflecting on her Dragons' Den experience, Hannah recently wrote in a LinkedIn post: 'I stood on that famous carpet and told my story raw and real. I shared my childhood, my military background, and my big dream. The Dragons saw something in me.' She added: 'For me, building Toddle wasn't just about creating a business; it was about creating value. From the beginning, I had a clear goal to grow the brand and sell. And that's exactly what I did. Toddle has now been acquired by new owners, and I couldn't be prouder of what we achieved.' View More » Dragons' Den is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Got a story?
