Detroit Tigers Make Announcement on Closer Will Vest After Royals Series

Detroit Tigers Make Announcement on Closer Will Vest After Royals Series originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers continued their winning ways on Sunday with a 1-0 victory over the rival Kansas City Royals, their second win in three games against manager Matt Quatraro's team. Advertisement The Tigers got two hits from Riley Greene and a masterful pitching performance yet again from last year's AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal en route to the win. Now 39-21 with the best record in the American League, Detroit's ascent to the top of the Majors has been a wonder to behold. Following the series, Detroit made an announcement on a former Rule 5 draft pick who has become the Tigers' de facto closer, helping to shore up a bullpen tasked with shutting the door on opposing teams. "Will Vest is your Tigers @PrimitivPerform Reliever of the Month for May," they added. Advertisement Vest compiled a 1.29 earned-run average in 14 innings of work with the Tigers during last month's games. The 29-year-old native of Houston added a 1.14 WHIP and 15 strikeouts with just four walks during the month as the Tigers finished with the best record in Major League Baseball for the season heading into June. Vest was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 12th pick in the 2020 Rule 5 draft out of the Tigers' organization on Dec. 10, 2020. He was later returned to the Tigers after he was designated by the Mariners for assignment and has become a key part of the Tigers' pitching staff at age 29. Detroit Tigers Make Historic Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson Announcement

Detroit Tigers Make Historic Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Detroit Tigers improved their Major League Baseball best record to 39-21 on the season Sunday with a 1-0 road win over the Kansas City Royals. Advertisement The Tigers took two of three games from their AL Central rivals one series removed from a three-game sweep against the San Francisco Giants. Detroit got two hits from rising star outfielder Riley Greene against Kansas City as Greene continued his hot start to the season. Greene's strong game put him in elite company with teammate Spencer Torkelson, making him the subject of a historic post on Sunday. Riley Greene smacks a single against the Royals on June 1 at Kauffmann Stadium. © Denny Medley-Imagn Images "They're the two best friends that anybody could have," the Tigers' X account wrote as they shared the news. "Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene enter June as the only set of teammates in the AL to both have 13+ homers and 40+ RBI," the page wrote. Advertisement "It's the first time in franchise history we've had two players with 13+ HR at the start of June." Greene is hitting .271 on the season while Torkelsen is hitting .235. Greene's production is perhaps more on the expected side than Torkelson's after the Detroit first baseman was listed as a potential cut casualty heading into the 2025 season. Torkelson's bounce back year has given Detroit's lineup a much needed boost heading toward July 15's MLB All-Star Game in at Truist Park in Atlanta. The Tigers will hit the road for a four-game set against the Chicago White Sox starting Monday at 7:40 p.m., with Jack Flaherty taking the hill against White Sox hurler Jonathan Cannon. Detroit Tigers' Alex Cobb pitched through 'a lot of discomfort' in first rehab start

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Cobb completed the first start of his rehab assignment Friday, May 30, with High-A West Michigan. The 37-year-old has been sidelined since before spring training due to a right hip injury. It was his first competitive game in 2025. Advertisement He didn't look healthy. "I don't think he's feeling great physically," manager A.J. Hinch said Saturday, May 31, less than 24 hours after Cobb's outing. "I haven't spoken to him directly, but the information coming back is that he's still battling a lot. I applaud him for what he's trying to do because he's pitching through a lot of discomfort." Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Cobb pitches for High-A West Michigan on a rehab assignment May 30, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. OLD DOG, NEW TRICKS: After Tarik Skubal's 'Maddux,' MLB legend Greg Maddux shares secret to sustaining success In Friday's game, Cobb tossed two scoreless innings with zero walks and three strikeouts, allowing just one hit. He faced the Dayton Dragons, an affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. All three strikeouts ended on swings and misses, but on those pitches, he grimaced as he completed his delivery, then walked slowly off the mound. Advertisement He hung his head a couple of times, looking defeated. But Cobb kept pitching through the pain, throwing 24 pitches. "We're going to have to continue to nudge him forward or continue to give him some rest so that he can continue to pitch," Hinch said. "Moving around has been the problem for him, and we're going to continue to nudge him and see what he can give us." The Tigers are confident in Cobb's individual pitches, but they're not confident in the way his body is moving off the mound. His fastball averaged approximately 92.5 mph in Friday's rehab start, and he also used his splitter and curveball. Advertisement "I think the stuff is good, which is the teaser," Hinch said. "He could take the stuff he was pitching last night in A-ball and apply it in the big leagues, and he's going to get soft contact and miss — like he always has." The Tigers signed Cobb to a one-year, $15 million contract in December 2024. It's unclear if Cobb is scheduled for another rehab start. All smiles for Sawyer Gipson-Long Right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long isn't active — at least not yet — but he showed up to Kauffman Stadium to throw a bullpen session in front of pitching coaches Chris Fetter, Robin Lund and Juan Nieves. The 27-year-old has already completed five starts in his rehab assignment, returning from right elbow and left hip surgery. Advertisement He said he felt good in Saturday's bullpen. The Tigers, though, haven't determined what's next for Gipson-Long. Although he doesn't need to be activated until June 7, the Tigers have an opening for Tuesday's game against the White Sox. Gipson-Long appears ready to start for the Tigers on Tuesday, June 3, against the Chicago White Sox, replacing injured Jackson Jobe in the starting rotation. Advertisement The Royals won, 1-0.
