Proteas snatch defeat from jaws of victory as Black Caps claim Tri-Series crown in Harare

The Proteas fell agonisingly short in the T20I Tri-Series final against the New Zealand in Harare on Saturday. Picture: Zimbabwe Cricket In a thrilling encounter at Harare, New Zealand clinched the Tri-series T20 final against South Africa by a mere three runs on Saturday. Winning the toss, the Proteas opted to bowl first, a decision that initially seemed promising but ultimately proved to be a challenging one. The Kiwis started their innings with a strong foundation as their top three batters contributed substantially to a formidable total of 180 runs. Devon Conway and Tim Seifert forged an effective partnership that saw them set the pace early on. Conway's innings unfolded impressively, before he fell to Lungi Ngidi for a well-played 47 off 31 balls. Seifert, also with a notable contribution of 30 runs from 28 balls, was dismissed in the 9th over, leaving the Proteas desperate for breakthroughs. In the midst of a growing Kiwi momentum, Rachin Ravindra emerged as the game-changer. He wreaked havoc on the Proteas with a blistering 47 runs from just 27 deliveries, boasting a strike rate of 174.

Henry guides New Zealand to T20 Tri-Series win over S Africa

July 26 (Reuters) - New Zealand seamer Matt Henry restricted South Africa to three runs from the last over to seal a three-run victory in the Twenty20 International Tri-Series final at the Harare Sports Club in Zimbabwe on Saturday. Chasing 181 for victory, South Africa needed eight off the last eight balls with six wickets in hand, and seven from the final over, but brilliant catches in the outfield by Michael Bracewell and Daryl Mitchell helped restrict them to 177 for six. Dewald Brevis looked as though he had won the game with 31 from 16 deliveries and was an inch or two from completing the job as he launched Henry towards the square-leg boundary, only for Bracewell to juggle the ball as he stepped over the rope back into play to complete the catch. Mitchell took a superb diving effort at long off to dismiss George Linde, who looked as though he would win the game for the South Africans with a big hit down the ground. Senuran Muthusamy could not get bat to ball on the final delivery of the game from Henry, who finished with figures of 2-19 from three overs. "As a group we have been playing some really good cricket and to get over the line in a really tight game, I am proud of the guys," Henry said. "It is credit to the attitude of our team, making sure we stay in the fight and knowing that wickets can change things." New Zealand were sent into bat and amassed 180 for five. Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra both scored 47. Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored 51 from 35 balls in South Africa's reply and they looked to be coasting home before Brevis' dismissal and the excellent final over from Henry. "We played a pretty good game, it was a match of millimetres," South Africa captain Rassie van der Dussen said. "We have had guys making debuts and experimented a bit (in the series), so for the young guys to come in and get so close, we will learn a lot from this." Zimbabwe were the third team involved in the Tri-Series, but lost all four group games.

Black Caps secure comfortable T20 win over South Africa

Tim Seifert's aggressive half-century on a tricky pitch led New Zealand to a comfortable seven-wicket win over South Africa in a tri-series T20 match overnight. Opening batter Seifert, dropped in the first over before he had scored, hit an unbeaten 66 off 48 balls to guide the Black Caps to their target of 135 with more than four overs to spare. Earlier, South Africa tinkered with its batting order but the experiment of using captain Rassie van der Dussen as an opener failed to pay off as the team could only make 134-8. Reeza Hendricks top-scored with 41 off 37 balls and George Linde stroked an unbeaten 23. The two teams will meet again in Saturday's final after host Zimbabwe, which takes on New Zealand in a dead rubber on Thursday, lost three games in a row. New Zealand will go into the final with a 2-0 record against South Africa after beating the Proteas by 21 runs earlier in the tri-series. (Source: Three NOW) Seifert and Devon Conway (14) combined for the tournament's highest tally in the batting power play as New Zealand cruised to 55-1 in the first six overs. The South African bowlers were wayward with their line and length and conceded a total of 17 wides. Simelane made late amends for his earlier lapse when he found the outside edge of the bat to remove Conway, before spinner Senuran Muthusamy (2-24) picked up the wickets of Rachin Ravindra (3) and Mark Chapman (10). But Seifert continued to dominate and raised his half-century off 38 balls when he hit Muthusamy over his head for a straight six. (Source: 1News) Van der Dussen (14) struck three boundaries but attempted an over-ambitious shot against Adam Milne, only to see his stumps knocked back. Chapman delivered a spectacular run-out of Rubin Hermann when he sprinted from mid-wicket before diving in at the non-striker's end to break the stumps. South Africa then lost its way completely when in-form batter Dewald Brevis feathered a catch to wicketkeeper Seifert as he tried to upper-cut Will O'Rourke in the 10th over. Santner stifled the middle-order by removing Lhuan-dre Pretorius (1), who was demoted to middle-order from his usual opening slot, and Simelane in an economical spell of 2-26. Jacob Duffy (2-33) ended Hendricks' 37-ball toil when he had him caught at cover, and he followed it up with the wicket of Gerald Coetzee, who attempted an upper-cut but gave Seifert his second catch.

Devon Conway's unbeaten fifty guides New Zealand to comfortable win over Zimbabwe

Harare: Right-arm seamer Matt Henry's three-wicket haul and opener Devon Conway's unbeaten fifty helped the New Zealand side to register a comfortable eight-wicket victory over hosts, Zimbabwe, in the third clash of the ongoing T20I tri-series at the Harare Sports Club on Friday. With this win, New Zealand moved to the top of the points table after winning their second match in a row in the ongoing series. They currently have a net run rate of +1.919, whereas Zimbabwe are at last with a net run rate of -2.374 after losing both of their games in the T20I series. Chasing a mere total of 121 runs to win the encounter, the Kiwis' batters Tim Siefert and Devon Conway came out to bat in the middle. The Blackcaps didn't have the start they wanted, as they lost their first wicket at 5, with Siefert sent back to the pavilion after scoring 3(5). The wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by a right-arm seamer, Blessing Muzarabani, in the second over. After the opener's dismissal, left-hand batter Rachin Ravindra came to bat. The visitors touched the 50-run mark on the third ball of the seventh over as Conway took a single. In the ninth over, the Mitchell Santner-led side lost their second wicket as Ravindra was sent back to the dressing room after scoring 30(19), which came with the help of four boundaries and one six in his innings. He was dismissed by pacer Tinotenda Maposa. Following the southpaw's departure, right-hand batter Daryl Mitchell came out to the crease. In the 12th over, Conway completed his half-century as he slammed a maximum on the bowling of off-spinner Sikandar Raza. On the first ball of the 13th over, which was bowled by Muzarabani, Conway took a single and brought up the team's hundred. In the 14th over, New Zealand completed the chase with eight wickets in hand and 37 balls left in the game. At the end, Conway 59*(40) and Mitchell 26*(19) remained unbeaten on the crease. Conway was awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant innings of 59* runs from 40 balls, which was laced with four boundaries and two maximums in his innings. For Zimbabwe, one wicket each was snapped by Muzarabani (1/27 in 4 overs) and Maposa (1/17 in 2 overs) in their respective bowling spells in the fixture. Earlier in the match, the Kiwis' captain, Mitchell Santner, won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first. Batting first, the Sikandar Raza-led side were able to score just 120 runs after losing seven wickets in 20 overs. The run-getters in this innings were Wessly Madhevere (36 runs off 32 balls), Brian Bennett (21 runs from 20 balls), Tony Munyonga (13 runs in 18 balls), Ryan Burl (12 runs off 9 balls), and Sikandar Raza (12 runs from 18 balls). For New Zealand, three wickets were grabbed by Matt Henry (3/26 in 4 overs), and one wicket each was bagged by Adam Milne (1/30 in 4 overs), Mitchell Santner (1/18 in 4 overs), Michael Bracewell (1/15 in 2 overs), and Rachin Ravindra (1/10 in 3 overs) in their respective spels in the first innings. Brief Score: Zimbabwe 120/7 in 20 overs (Wessly Madhevere 36, Brian Bennett 21; Matt Henry 3/26) vs New Zealand 122/2 in 13.5 overs (Devon Conway 59*, Rachin Ravindra 30; Tinotenda Maposa 1/17).

Black Caps stay unbeaten in T20 Tri-Series with win over Zimbabwe

Photo: MICHAEL BRADLEY The Black Caps have remained unbeaten in cricket's T20 Tri-Series, being played in Harare, Zimbabwe. They've beaten the hosts by eight wickets to secure their second straight win and move to the top of the table, ahead of the Zimbabweans and South Africa. After winning the toss and sending Zimbabwe into bat, the Black Caps initially found getting breakthroughs tough, with openers Wessly Madhevere and Brian Bennett scoring 36 in the first five overs. But after fast bowler Matt Henry claimed Bennett's wicket with the second ball of the sixth over, New Zealand started to get on top. Henry, in particular, ended up shining, taking two more wickets, as he finished the best of the bowlers with three for 26 off his four overs. Adam Milne, captain Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell and Rachin Ravindra claimed a wicket each, as they restricted Zimbabwe to just 120 for seven off their 20 overs. And while New Zealand lost opener Tim Seifert early in their chase for just three, a solid partnership between Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra ensued to set up the victory. Conway ended up scoring an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls, while Ravindra's 30 came from just 19 balls. Daryl Mitchell helped seal the win with an unbeaten 26, as New Zealand finished 122 for two, easily chasing down the target with 39 balls to spare, with Conway named player of the match. "It was nice again to contribute today to the win," Conway said. "It's always nice to be one of those guys who stands out and puts their hands up and perform for the boys," he said. Meanwhile, all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been withdrawn from the rest of the series and the upcoming two-test series against Zimbabwe, due to a groin injury. New Zealand Cricket said Phillips suffered the injury during the Major League Cricket final in Dallas and needs "a number of weeks" to recover. The Black Caps are already without batter Finn Allen, who was ruled out of the Tri-Series with a foot injury suffered in the MLC. "It's obviously disappointing to lose someone of Glenn's calibre," head coach Rob Walter said. "Much like Finn, we really feel for Glenn and that he misses out on this series. "We know he was eager to get out on the field for the Blackcaps, and unfortunately, he won't be able to do that for this series. "We know he'll work hard to get himself back onto the park, and I look forward to when that happens." Phillips' replacement in the test squad will be named later, the NZC added.
