Horse racing: 2,000 Guineas day at Newmarket and more

Good afternoon from the Rowley Mile at Newmarket, the historic setting for the 2,000 Guineas, the first Classic of the new Flat season, later today. Eleven runners are due to go to post at 3.35pm BST, and one will take the unique opportunity to add his name to a roll of honour that dates all the way back to 1809. The certain favourite is Field Of Gold, a striking grey, who bolted up in the Craven Stakes over the Classic course-and-distance last month, but he is opposed by several very promising three-year-olds with varying levels of achievement and experience to date. The very live opponents to Field Of Gold, who will be bidding to give his veteran trainer, John Gosden, a long-overdue first victory in the 2,000 Guineas, include Shadow Of Light, who took Britain's most prestigious juvenile event, the Dewhurst Stakes, last October, and Ruling Court, a 'dark' horse in the manner of last year's winner, Notable Speech, with just three runs to his name so far. Shadow Of Light is one of just two juvenile Group One winners in the field – Scorthy Champ, the National Stakes winner, is the other – while Aidan O'Brien relies on Extended as he goes in search of a record-extending 11th Guineas winner. Elsewhere on today's televised card, a competitive renewal of the Palace House Stakes, a significant pointer towards the big sprints to come at Royal Ascot and beyond, is due off at 2.55pm, while a Royal meeting winner from last season, Hand Of God, makes his first start since in the Suffolk Stakes Handicap at 2.20pm. The ITV action is completed by Thirsk's feature event of the season, the Thirsk Hunt Cup Handicap, at 2.35pm, and a quick trip to Sussex for the Conqueror Stakes for fillies at Goodwood at 2pm. The 2025 Flat season will have its first Classic winner in just over three hours' time, and all the build-up as well as the race itself will get in-depth coverage as it happens here on the Guardian's live blog. 2,000 Guineas Betting Tips: Runners, Riders and Best Bets for Newmarket Classic

Newmarket stage the first Classics of the season this weekend with Saturday's Betfred 2,000 Guineas preceding a cracking renewal of the Betfred 1,000 Guineas on Sunday. We've taken a look at each of the 11 runners in turn, examining their odds on betting sites, to work out who may have a chance of claiming Guineas glory on Saturday (3.35pm) 2,000 Guineas Betting Preview: Runners & Riders Review BENEVENTO – ★☆☆☆☆ Made a satisfactory return to action in the bet365 Craven Stakes, folding late on after trying to make all the running. Stamina at this trip yet to be confirmed, especially at this level. EXPANDED – ★★★★☆ Compacted a two-race juvenile career into a week last October, landing a Curragh maiden in game style prior to running a blinder in the Dewhurst Stakes (7f) at this venue just seven days later. Plenty more to come given his unexposed nature and a threat to all. FIELD OF GOLD – ★★★★★ Looked to have matured and strengthened ahead of his comeback and that was evident on his highly impressive victory in the bet365 Craven. Having travelled powerfully throughout that day, he quickened in style to score readily once the gallops appeared. The one to beat in the eyes of horse racing betting sites and can give his training operation a first win in this prestigious event. GREEN IMPACT – ★★★☆☆ Built on an encouraging Curragh debut as a juvenile with two defeats of Derby contender Delacroix over a mile, the latter in Group 2 company. Will stay further than this trip so slight concern one or two of his rivals may have a little too much speed at today's distance. Could develop into a live Derby hope himself with a big run. RULING COURT – ★★★☆☆ Bolted up on his Meydan comeback at the beginning of March and the level of his work since has encouraged rider William Buick to pick him ahead of Dewhurst scorer Shadow Of Light. Very much respected if stall 11 doesn't inconvenience his chance. SCORTHY CHAMP – ★★★★☆ Drawn in the middle of the track and looks a threat judged on the impressive nature of his National Stakes success at the Curragh last September. Today's test should suit ideally, and he has been the subject of positive vibes from his shrewd handler in the lead up to this event. SEAGULLS ELEVEN – ★☆☆☆☆ Talented juvenile in his own right and posted the best effort of a busy two-year-old career in the National Stakes when third to Scorthy Champ at the Curragh. Went on to finish fourth in the Dewhurst behind Shadow Of Light and suspicion he needs to improve markedly to figure at the business end. SHADOW OF LIGHT – ★★★☆☆ Middle Park Stakes winner who was thought to be a Commonwealth Cup type until defying connections with a game and tenacious win in the Dewhurst Stakes over seven furlongs last October. Joined a select band of horses to complete the Grade 1 double that day, but Godolphin's No1 rider prefers Ruling Court while a first time tongue tie raises a small red flag. TORNADO ALERT – ★☆☆☆☆ Lightly raced colt who has yet to tackle turf in a two-race career which saw him win at the second time of asking at Newcastle over a mile. Plenty of potential but he is in at the deep end here, so others preferred. WIMBLEDON HAWKEYE – ★★★☆☆ Performed with credit in the bet365 Craven Stakes on his comeback when looking in need of the run late behind Field Of Gold. Boasts plenty of experience of the Rowley Mile and, with some betting sites offering four places, he looks an enticing each-way price given he beat Ruling Court as a juvenile at York in the Acomb Stakes. YAH MO BE THERE – ★☆☆☆☆ Talented sprinting juvenile in his own right and recorded a marginal career best in the Newbury trial for this race when starting sluggishly. Yard have enjoyed a good spring, but there remains a question mark about his effectiveness at this trip in this grade. 2,000 Guines Best Bets Field Of Gold sets a strong standard courtesy of his scintillating success in the bet365 Craven Stakes. He was reportedly short of fitness that day so if he has improved then he must surely take all the beating with his stamina and track effectiveness assured. For those with access to betting sites offering four places, Wimbledon Hawkeye makes some appeal at a big price given he was second to Field Of Gold last month and has already beaten Ruling Court, while Expanded and Scorthy Champ appear the best of the rest. Please gamble responsibly When having a bet, it's vital to practice responsible gambling. Sports betting can be addictive, so bettors should take precautions to keep themselves safe when using gambling sites. Every licensed UK betting site should offer safer gambling tools, such as deposit limits, time outs, self-assessment questionnaires and self-exclusion options. These are free tools to help punters stay in control and they are available at various gambling sites, including online bookmakers, casino sites, slot sites, and poker sites. These operators may offer punters free bets or casino bonuses from time to time, but it's important to treat these rewards with caution. Read the terms and conditions before accepting any bonus as most new casino sites will require you to place a cash bet before handing out the reward. Always remember that betting is meant to be fun. It should never be viewed as a guaranteed way to make money. Ryan Moore rates his 2,000 Guineas prospects and identifies the main dangers

The world-renowned jockey has not won the season's first Classic for eight years but expects his latest mount to be right in the mix at Newmarket on Saturday Ryan Moore has rated his prospects of landing the Betfred 2,000 Guineas when the first British Classic of the Flat Turf season takes place on Saturday. The outstanding jockey has captured the £525,000 prize twice but has not stood on the winners' podium since 2017 when he was successful on the Aidan O'Brien-trained Churchill. Last year's race ended in bitter disappointment when hot favourite City Of Troy beat only two other finishers. This year's preparations were disrupted at the start of the week when his expected mount Twain was ruled out of the race by O'Brien. ‌ As a result Moore has switched to Expanded, a twice-raced colt who finished second in the Dewhurst Stakes on his last start at Newmarket. Moore has given his thoughts on his chance in his latest blog for World Pool. ‌ He said: 'I'm looking forward to riding Expanded in the 2000 Guineas. He's a very lightly raced colt by Wootton Bassett out of a Galileo mare. He won on debut at the Curragh in October and then just a week later, was second in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes, beaten a neck having to make his own running which wasn't ideal. 'We think he's a very talented colt and the mile will suit him. He's rated 118, which is the joint second highest in the field, and it's very unusual to have a rating that high after just two starts. 'If he can find a little bit more improvement, he's right in the mix for winning the Guineas and I think he has a good chance. He's been working well and that's why he's here.' He continued: 'Of the others, I think Ruling Court is a big danger and will be suited by the quick ground at Newmarket. It's interesting that William [Buick] has chosen to ride him over Shadow Of Light who is rated higher. 'Field Of Gold won a Group 3 at Sandown last summer and didn't run badly when fourth in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere in October. His first run this season in the Craven was very impressive where he had a couple of these in behind him. 'They'd be the main two, but I respect Scorthy Champ, who has had three runs and is a Group 1 winner, and Green Impact, another Wootton Bassett, who beat Delacroix twice last season. They bring a good level of form.'

Gosden eyes 2000 Guineas win with Field Of Gold

John Gosden will saddle leading contender Field Of Gold as the top trainer looks to finally win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on 74-year-old, who set up as a trainer nearby in 1989, has won all four of the other British Classics and more than 3,000 races in training alongside son Thady, he hopes his impressive Craven Stakes winner can close the missing gap in his illustrious CV."It has never weighed on my mind. It seems to be glaring to everyone else but not to me," said Gosden senior."It's nice to have a horse who at the moment is favourite, but it doesn't mean that you're going to win it."Field Of Gold heads 11 contenders for the big Appleby's Ruling Court is another leading fancy after a six-length victory in Dubai in March, with the Godolphin handler also fielding Shadow Of Light, winner of both the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes last Court is the choice of first jockey William Buick, with Mickael Barzalona taking the ride on Shadow Of also has a third runner in the Saeed bin Suroor-trained Tornado O'Brien, seeking an 11th 2000 Guineas victory, has Dewhurst runner-up Expanded as his sole Harrington's Green Impact and the Joseph O'Brien-trained Scorthy Champ complete the Irish second Wimbledon Hawkeye represents James Owen while fourth-placed Benevento also features, along with Yah Mo Be Eleven runs for owners that are all current or former Brighton and Hove Albion footballers, including James Milner and Danny Welbeck. 2000 Guineas runners and riders Benevento David EganExpanded Ryan MooreField Of Gold Kieran ShoemarkGreen Impact Shane FoleyRuling Court William BuickScorthy Champ Dylan Browne McMonagleSeagulls Eleven Tom MarquandShadow Of Light Mickael BarzalonaTornado Alert Silvestre de SousaWimbledon Hawkeye Harry DaviesYa Mo Be There Jamie Spencer
