Giants Star Challenges Top Spot in DT Rankings
Giants Star Challenges Top Spot in DT Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former general manager Dave Gettleman will go down in New York Giants history as a villain. Between drafting a running back with the No. 2 pick, trading the franchise's most iconic receiver, and signing several busts in free agency, the fanbase's vitriol is understandable. But it wasn't all bad. Advertisement In the Odell Beckham Jr. trade, the Giants received the No. 17 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Gettleman called defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and told him to get ready for East Rutherford. Gettleman was criticized for the move based on Lawrence's positional value as a nose tackle and (perceived) inability to impact the passing game. In recent years, Lawrence has put those concerns to rest and emerged as New York's best player. Subsequently, the Giants star challenged the top spot of Pro Football Focus' defensive tackle rankings, ultimately falling behind only Kansas City Chiefs lineman Chris Jones. 'Lawrence logged only 550 snaps in 2024 due to some missed time, but he recorded an 89.0-plus PFF overall grade (89.9) for the third season in a row,' Trevor Sikkema wrote. 'His 1.07 PFF WAR over the past three years sits behind only Chris Jones at the position.' Advertisement It has been easy to tune out New York given its struggles, but Lawrence shouldn't be taken for granted. He's more than a blue-chip talent and the center of this defense – he's a force multiplier and one of the best pass-rushing nose tackles the game has ever seen. Lawrence's 2024 was cut short due to an elbow injury, and it may have robbed him of Defensive Player of the Year votes. In just 12 games, he logged a career-high nine sacks with 44 tackles and eight tackles for loss to boot. In the two seasons prior, he rose to prominence and earned two second-team All-Pro nominations. Lawrence is a mandatory double team who amplifies his edge rushers and can spoil plays by himself against the run and pass. There isn't a nose tackle as potent in the NFL, and that unique skill set garners real consideration for the No. 1 spot at the position. Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up About Giants
Odell Beckham Jr. Opens Up About Giants originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There may be no bigger 'what if' in New York Giants history than the trade of receiver Odell Beckham Jr. Dealt to the Cleveland Browns for a first- and third-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, along with safety Jabrill Peppers, Beckham's departure broke the hearts of a fanbase. He was the team's best player and an elite offensive weapon. He was a cultural icon and, seemingly, made for the market he dominated. Advertisement And then he was shipped to Cleveland by (then) general manager Dave Gettleman for reasons that fans would still challenge. In the years since the trade, it has grown increasingly difficult to say New York came out on the losing end. With that first-round pick, Gettleman drafted defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who's now one of the top defensive players in the sport. Beckham, meanwhile, has posted just one 1,000-yard season since leaving New York. He hasn't come particularly close since doing so in 2019. Even so, the feeling that things could have been different in East Rutherford has lingered well past Gettleman's tenure. On 'Beckham and Friends Live,' the receiver shared an emotional confession about the Giants. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," Beckham said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was pissed because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. Advertisement "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." Maybe Beckham would have done enough to elevate Daniel Jones, who the team drafted at No. 6, just 11 picks before Lawrence. Perhaps he would have been more productive without the chemistry- and scheme-based issues that plagued his Browns tenure. The fact that the New York faithful didn't get to see it will continue to haunt the organization. Beckham, having won with the Rams, fell short with the Baltimore Ravens, and was forgotten with the Miami Dolphins. His career may very well be over. The Giants will hope history doesn't repeat itself with the LSU standout following in his footsteps. Edge Rusher Rankings Set High Bar for Giants
Edge Rusher Rankings Set High Bar for Giants originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In 2024, the New York Giants hoped that the combination of defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and edge rusher Brian Burns would be enough to overpower opposing offenses and make a few extra games attainable. Advertisement Both played well, but the depravity of the Giants' offense cut that dream short. General manager Joe Schoen went back to the well in 2025, drafting Penn State's Abdul Carter with the No. 3 pick, the second first-round edge rusher of his tenure. Carter is expected to start over Kayvon Thibodeaux and join Burns for one of the league's best pairings. With Lawrence between them, New York is once again supposed to wreak havoc on opposing offensive lines. If 2024's unit was promising, 2025's might be too big to feel. Subsequently, Pro Football Focus' top-32 edge rusher rankings set awfully high expectations for the Giants' pass rush. Burns, the most proven talent New York has along the edge, ranked 16th. Advertisement 'Burns' first season in New York was a success, as he posted a career-high 79.2 PFF grade, fueled by an 82.9 pass-rush grade and 61 total pressures — both the second-highest marks of his career,' Ryan Smith wrote. Carter, despite not having any NFL snaps under his belt, fell just four spots behind him. Thibodeaux took a step forward in 2024, but went unranked on this list. 'Projecting rookie production is always tricky,' Smith admitted. 'However, Carter led the FBS in PFF pass-rush grade (92.4) and total pressures (66), and he also ranked in the top five in pass-rush win rate (22.6%). He has all the tools to make an immediate impact at the NFL level. 'Carter has drawn comparisons to fellow Penn State alum Micah Parsons, who was elite as a rookie in 2021. Given his potential, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Carter crack the top 15 on this list next year.' Advertisement The Giants joined the Houston Texans (Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter), Pittsburgh Steelers (T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith), and Minnesota Vikings (Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel) as the only teams with two players in the top 20. Three other teams had multiple in the top 32, and the Steelers and Miami Dolphins each had a trio make the cut. Simply put, New York is supposed to have an elite pass rush. The organization has spent two first-round picks along the edge, another on Lawrence, trading a second-round pick for Burns, and drafted defensive tackle Darius Alexander in Round 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Both Burns and Lawrence signed top-end extensions. Given its importance to the defense and the offensive struggles it will be asked to cover up, the Giants' defensive line is one of the most important units in all of football. This group needs to be elite, and its mix of electric talents and depth make that a fairly safe bet. Giants' Darius Alexander Gives First Impression of Position Coach
Part of the New York Giants' path to 'winning' the 2025 NFL Draft was finding value in the middle of it. That was headlined by third-round selection, Toledo defensive tackle Darius Alexander. First-round edge rusher Abdul Carter is a key piece of the Giants' elite defensive line. Alexander completes it. A plug-and-play starter next to Dexter Lawrence, Alexander is capable of taking advantage of Lawrence's gravity and posing enough of a threat to take some attention away from the superstar. Advertisement Of course, there's plenty of work to be done to fulfill that potential. For that, Alexander is turning to New York defensive line coach Andre Patterson. At his post-draft press conference, the Giants rookie revealed his first impression of his position coach. 'First impression was great,' Alexander said. 'Dre is a chill, cool guy. He's definitely got energy when it's time, but for the most part he's chill, he's laid back, and he just wants to get to understand you as a player better.' Patterson is among the most respected position coaches in the league, with four decades of coaching experience to his name. He helped get inspiring production from a hodgepodge of unheralded linemen in 2024. Advertisement Now, he's being given a second starter-level talent to optimize. 'He said he could develop my whole game, but more than anything, just the knack to go out there and play with reckless abundance, just fly around with my head on fire,' he added. Alexander has the talent to win in both phases, largely thanks to an elite blend of mass and athleticism, best exemplified by his sub-5.00-second 40-yard dash at over 300 pounds. He's hard to move and boasts an impressive first step to penetrate gaps and push the pocket. 'I intend to work on everything,' Alexander admitted. 'My whole game needs work. I think you can work on everything, even what you're good at. Just coming in, putting my head down and going to work, trusting my coaches and the veterans in the room to help me is what I'll be looking forward to.' Advertisement There are risks in Alexander's profile, from his age to the level of competition at Toledo and suboptimal production. But with real upside and incredible talent surrounding him, New York will bank on Patterson making the most of Alexander's tools to truly lock in its defensive line among the best in the league.
