How trainer Yakub Dalim saved Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal's life after heart attack

MIRACLE Trainer Yakub Dalim heroically saved Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal (left) from a life-threatening heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match by administering crucial CPR, avoiding helicopter transport, and ensuring speedy hospitalisation. Picture: Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix Image: Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix Tragedy was averted as what first appeared to be minor chest pains, before Bangladesh cricketer Tamim Iqbal suddenly suffered a massive heart attack, and it took some quick thinking from his trainer, Yakub Chowdhury Dalim, which ultimately saved the player's life. On March 24, Iqbal had complained about chest pains, which saw him taken to the hospital during a Dhaka Premier League match in Bangladesh. On his journey to the hospital, Iqbal subsequently lost consciousness. It was then that the Mohammedan Sporting Club trainer sprang into action to save Iqbal. Heroic CPR saves cricket star Tamim Iqbal after heart attack 'The match started around 9 a.m. After warming up, Tamim seemed a bit uncomfortable. He said, 'I'm feeling some chest pain. Can I get a gas medicine?' He took it, but the pain didn't go away. Then he said, 'I think I should go to the hospital,'' recalled Dalim to Iqbal had been talking up to that point, but the moment they entered the administration building at the cricket ground, he suffered what would later be identified as a heart attack. 'I asked him again and again, 'Tamim Bhai, can you hear me?' Nothing. No movement, no reaction. That's when I knew—this was serious. I checked for a pulse. Nothing. He wasn't breathing either. In that moment, I realised—he was having a massive cardiac arrest. I didn't waste a second. 'I started CPR right away because I knew if I hesitated, we could lose him. The helicopter hadn't arrived yet. I pressed down hard on his chest, over and over, for about two to three minutes. Just then, I heard the helicopter landing on the athletic track.' Dalim also paid credit to the fast driving of the ambulance driver. 'At the same time, match referee Debu Da was doing everything he could. He asked me what was happening, and I told him, 'It's bad.' Another doctor at BKSP, Samir Bhai, came over. He saw me doing CPR and said, ' Get him to the hospital as soon as possible." 'Then someone suggested putting him in the helicopter. But I immediately snapped, 'If we put him in that helicopter, we're going to lose him.' We didn't have time for that. We had to get to the hospital—fast. I turned to Debu Da and said, 'We need to move now. If I stop CPR, his other organs will fail. His brain won't get oxygen.'

Bangladesh recall in-form opener Anamul Haque for second Zimbabwe Test

Dhaka, Apr 24 (UNI) In-form opener Anamul Haque is in line to play his first Test in almost three years after he won a recall to Bangladesh's squad for the second and final Test against Zimbabwe in Chattogram. Anamul hasn't played a red-ball fixture since he appeared against the West Indies in June 2022, but the 32-year-old earns a call-up to a 15-player squad on the back of some excellent efforts at domestic level. The right-hander has hit consecutive centuries for Gazi Group in the Dhaka Premier League and could be in contention to add to his five previous Test appearances as Bangladesh attempt to square their two-match series at home against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe shocked the hosts with a three-wicket triumph in the opening Test of the series in Sylhet and Bangladesh have responded by making two changes to their squad for the second Test that commences at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on April 28. Uncapped left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam is included in the squad alongside Anamul, while opener Zakir Hasan and pacer Nahid Rana are the two players to drop out, an ICC report said. Bangladesh squad: Najmul Hossain Shanto (c), Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Shadman Islam, Anamul Haque, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahidul Islam Ankon, Jaker Ali, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam, Nayeem Hasan, Tanvir Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Khaled Ahmed, Tanzim Hasan Sakib. Coach wants favored Bangladesh to focus on one day at a time against boosted Zimbabwe

SYLHET, Bangladesh (AP) — Coach Phil Simmons played down talk of a whitewash by Bangladesh against Zimbabwe ahead of their two-match test series starting on Sunday. The tour marks Zimbabwe's sixth visit. It has previously played 10 tests in Bangladesh and won just twice. Zimbabwe is the only team against which Bangladesh has a winning record. 'I prefer taking things one step at a time,' Simmons said. 'We'll play the first test here in Sylhet. If we win that then we'll think about the next match and discuss the series. 'But to win the first test we need to start by winning the first day. That's how I like to approach the game. 'I can't start thinking about Chattogram already. Right now our focus is entirely on Sylhet.' The national squad assembled for red-ball cricket for the first time since December and their last test series against the visiting West Indies, drawn 1-1. Most of the players have been engaged in Twenty20s in the Dhaka Premier League but Simmons expressed satisfaction with the team's readiness. 'Preparation has been very good,' he said. 'The facilities here feel like a dream — you can do everything you want. The hotel is nearby, and we've managed to do a lot of work in this short time.' The series is not part of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. But a victory will give Bangladesh an ideal platform for its first WTC series in June against Sri Lanka. Bangladesh finished seventh out of nine in the last cycle, winning four of 12 matches, including an historic 2-0 sweep on Pakistan soil. Zimbabwe has not won a test anywhere since March 2021. It lost its last test, a one-off against Ireland in February, by 63 runs in Bulawayo. Captain Craig Ervine and veteran allrounder Sean William return after missing the Ireland loss, and wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga reappears for the first time in more than two years. Simmons said Bangladesh wants a proper test pitch rather than a spin-friendly track which has been the basis of most of its home matches. 'We want to play the kind of cricket we believe in, and that means preparing a proper test wicket and going out there to win,' Simmons said. 'We play in a certain way, so we don't need to prepare a spin wicket against Zimbabwe.' The last time the teams squared off in Bangladesh was in February 2020 when Bangladesh won by an innings in Mirpur and Mushfiqur Rahim smashed an unbeaten double hundred. Mushfiqur, who recently retired from white-ball cricket, hinted at a renewed focus on red-ball success. Simmons praised his work ethic: 'He's working extremely hard. It's great to hear he's done well against Zimbabwe before, but we're starting fresh.' ___ AP cricket:

Tamim Iqbal suffers heart attack during DPL match

Tamim Iqbal, who retired from international cricket in 2023, has been a most prolific Bangladesh cricketer in history. PHOTO: AFP Tamim Iqbal, former Bangladesh captain, was rushed to the hospital after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match in Savar on Monday. The 36-year-old was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club at BKSP when he felt chest pain. After receiving medical attention, he was taken to a nearby hospital for tests. "He complained of chest pain and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he underwent an ECG," said BCB chief physician Debashish Chowdhury. "There was a minor issue, and sometimes, it is difficult to immediately assess the condition of the heart." His first blood test showed irregularities, but Tamim initially wanted to return to Dhaka. However, as he was leaving the hospital, his chest pain returned, and he was taken back. Doctors then confirmed that he had suffered a major heart attack. He is now receiving treatment at Fazilatunnesa Hospital. Tamim is undergoing an emergency procedure to insert a stent and improve blood flow. In response to the situation, several Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) directors are traveling to Savar, and a board meeting scheduled for Monday has been postponed. Tamim retired from international cricket in 2023 but continued playing in domestic tournaments. His condition is being closely monitored, and further updates are expected. Tamim has been one of the greatest ever players for Bangladesh, representing it in 391 matches across formats between 2007 and 2023. He has more than 15,000 international runs under his belt and is the only Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in all three international formats. BD court orders seizure of Shakib-ul-Hasan's assets A Bangladeshi court ordered the seizure of cricketer Shakib Al Hasan's assets in the latest legal headache for the sports star over his allegiance to the country's former leader. Shakib is a former lawmaker from the party of autocratic ex-leader Sheikh Hasina, who was overthrown in a student-led uprising last year and fled by helicopter to neighbouring India. His links to Hasina made him a target of public anger and he was among dozens facing murder investigations for a deadly police crackdown on protesters during the uprising. He has not been charged over those allegations but is currently being prosecuted on fraud charges for allegedly bouncing cheques totalling more than $300,000. A magistrate in the capital Dhaka ordered the seizure on Monday after a warrant for Shakib's arrest was issued by the court in January. Shakib was playing in a domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Canada when Hasina's government collapsed and has not returned to Bangladesh since. The left-arm allrounder has played 71 Tests, 247 one-day internationals and 129 Twenty20s for Bangladesh, taking a combined 712 wickets.
