Abu Dhabi to Salalah: The complete guide on travel, visas and what to do

If you're planning a getaway this summer and misty mountains and green hills sound increasingly appealing, you're probably considering heading from Abu Dhabi to Salalah. The southern Omani city gets a lot of attention this time of year and for good reason — between June and September, it turns into one of the few places in the region that actually cools down. This isn't your average beach trip though and it's not exactly straightforward if you've never been before. So here's a practical breakdown of everything you need to know if you're thinking of heading to Salalah during Khareef season. How to get from Abu Dhabi to Salalah Credit: Tanja Cotoaga/Unsplash Direct flights from Abu Dhabi take just under two hours. Wizz Air, Air Arabia and Etihad all operate seasonal routes, with Wizz Air offering the cheapest fares: Wizz Air: From Dhs179 (budget-friendly, no frills) Air Arabia: From Dhs399 Etihad Airways: From Dhs1,205 (if you're after full-service and convenience) Flights peak Khareef season (late July to early September) and they fill up quickly – so book early if you're set on flying. By road It's a long one – expect 12 to 14 hours on the road, depending on where you cross the border. Most people drive via Al Ain into Oman, then take the route through Nizwa and Haima. It's doable, but not short. You'll need car insurance that covers Oman and it's worth checking in advance whether your vehicle can be taken across the border (especially if it's leased or on finance). If you're stopping overnight, Muscat or Duqm are the usual halfway points. Visa info for UAE residents UAE residents need a tourist visa to enter Oman, even for short stays. Here's what you will need: Apply online via the Oman eVisa platform Ten-day tourist visas cost 5 OMR (around Dhs48) Processing is quick, but best not to leave it until the last minute You'll need at least six months' passport validity and if you're driving, make sure your car registration and GCC insurance are in order. Top tip: Apply at least 48 hours in advance during peak travel periods. What is Khareef season actually like? Khareef officially runs from June 21 to September 20, but the green really kicks in by late June and peaks around August. Expect temps around mid-20s°C and there can be fog, drizzle and light rain. Nights can get chilly, especially in the mountains and visibility drops in places like Jabal Samhan or Wadi Darbat. The closer you get to September, the less green it's likely to be – though there's still cooler weather and fewer crowds. Bring a light jacket, decent shoes and don't expect to swim in the sea – it might be too rough. What to do while you're there This isn't a city break in the typical sense – most of what you'll want to see is outside the city. If you don't rent a car, your options will be limited. Top sites (all reachable by car): Wadi Darbat: picnic spot with waterfalls, paddle boats and misty hills picnic spot with waterfalls, paddle boats and misty hills Al Mughsail: cliffs, blowholes and views over the Arabian Sea cliffs, blowholes and views over the Arabian Sea Ain Athum and Sahalnoot: natural springs surrounded by greenery natural springs surrounded by greenery Jabal Samhan: elevated viewpoints, dramatic fog and wild mountain roads elevated viewpoints, dramatic fog and wild mountain roads Marneef Cave: walkable coastal spot near the blowholes walkable coastal spot near the blowholes Frankincense Land Museum: archaeological site with history on the incense trade For longer stays, people often explore Taqah, Mirbat, or head further into the mountains. Things to know before you go Pack layers – it gets cool, especially in the hills. Traffic gets hectic around Eid and weekends. Book accommodation and transport early. Internet and mobile service can be spotty in remote areas – download your maps. No roaming? Get an Omani SIM at Salalah Airport or local shops. Be respectful of local customs – it's a conservative region, especially in villages. Where to stay You'll find everything from budget hotels to five-star resorts. If you're travelling during Eid or mid-August, book well in advance. Salalah fills up quickly during peak Khareef. Want to stay near the greenery? Try mountain guesthouses near Wadi Darbat. Prefer city convenience? Salalah city centre has familiar hotel chains. Road-tripping with friends or family? Look for villas or serviced apartments. Why Salalah is trending in the UAE Abu Dhabi has recently invested Dhs764 million into Salalah's tourism sector – including a huge beachfront resort project, marinas and luxury developments. It's part of a bigger UAE–Oman tourism push, so expect even more road trip-friendly resorts and high-end options over the next few years. For now, though, Salalah remains a refreshing, under-the-radar summer escape – and one that's surprisingly easy to reach. Time Out tip: Want to skip the flight and take the scenic route? Daily buses to Salalah run from Abu Dhabi and Sharjah for under Dhs100 – perfect if you're going with friends and don't want to drive. 4 cheapest last-minute holidays from Dubai in August

Time is rapidly running out for a quick getaway during the Dubai summer. With schools back next month, there's a short period of time for UAE-based families to squeeze in a quick last-minute holiday. And for those who like to leave it late, travel app Skyscanner has revealed the best bargain destinations and how far in advance you should book to get the best deal. The flight price comparison site has crunched the numbers and picked out the four most affordable airfare prices for August. Destinations are between one hour and four-and-a-half hours away from the UAE, so there's no need to use up long periods of annual leave to make the most of your trip. Cheapest last-minute holiday destinations from Dubai Colombo With a flight time sitting at around four and a half hours, you can explore the beaches, temples and historic landmarks of Colombo and Sri Lanka in no time at all. Take a boat ride around Beira Lake, where you'll also see the Buddhist temple (Seema Malaka) on the water. The National Museum of Colombo and the Gangaramaya Temple are also places you should stop at. Skyscanner has indicated that flights to the Sri Lankan capital are at their cheapest around 11 days ahead of travel and are priced at an average of Dhs1,209. Bookings for 17 to 19 days are also reasonably priced, varying between Dhs1,295 and Dhs1,385. Muscat (Credit: Shutterstock) Hang out at Al Qurum Beach if you've got the time – it's draped in golden sand and offers stunning views of clear turquoise waters. If you are on the lookout for traditional architecture, we suggest a trip to Al Alam Palace, which was built by Imam Sultan Bin Ahmad. Another must-visit is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, with its tall arches, lanterns, domes and chandeliers. Skyscanner says the cheapest time to book flights to Muscat is around 26 days before the scheduled departure, with flights priced at Dhs398 on average. But if you leave it a little later, then your flight will still be on the cheaper side, ranging between Dhs403 and Dhs437 on average when booked between 21 and 24 days out. Mumbai Credit: Shutterstock Mumbai is a city rich with history, cool architecture and exciting things to do. The birthplace of Bollywood is dubbed the City of Dreams, and it's easy to see why. It's home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites and some spectacular tours. Skyscanner says that airfares to Mumbai are approximately Dhs825 on average when booked within eight or nine days of departure. Kuwait The Kuwait City Marina is a must-visit spot. (Credit: Shutterstock) The Kuwait Towers are a defining landmark in Kuwait, where you can grab a bite to eat while looking out onto the city. Another must-visit is Kuwait's oldest market, Souk Al Mubarakiya, where you'll find Arabic handicrafts, traditional clothing and even perfumes. Travel to Kuwait is priced at Dhs253 on average when booking 25 days ahead of departure, a contrast from the Dhs436 figure when booking 13 days out. Ayoub El Mamoun, Travel Expert at Skyscanner, revealed that people surveyed by Skyscanner liked choosing destinations where their Dirhams go further. He said: 'The summer is a busy period as people look to maximise their vacation time and travel to different destinations and our data shows that there's still time to get the best prices for flights to Colombo, Mumbai, Kuwait City and Muscat for the month of August' 'Not only are these locations short-distance flights from the UAE but our survey shows that 48 percent are choosing destinations where their money goes further. 'Also, 85 percent said they would be willing to change the day or week to save money on their summer vacation, making these cities popular due to the reasonable exchange rate of the UAE Dirham against local currencies and better value for their vacations.' UAE travellers need to be wary that those with local bank cards are set to pay more when making transactions abroad. Starting September 22, UAE banks will raise the foreign transaction fee to 3.14 percent on all international purchases and ATM withdrawals made using credit or debit cards. The new Abu Dhabi rules drivers from Dubai need to know about

If you're planning a trip to the UAE capital, then you need to know that there have been some important updates to the emirate's traffic rules that could catch you out. Since the start of 2025, several new Abu Dhabi rules have been introduced for motorists, so you've got to be mindful of any changes you may not be aware of. Additionally, the UAE has also introduced new traffic laws across the country that you need to keep in mind when you're driving around. New Abu Dhabi rules for drivers Don't block the road Credit: Wikimedia Commons Had a bumper-to-bumper moment? Don't just sit there – move along or pay the price. Abu Dhabi Police is cracking down on drivers who fail to shift to a safe spot after minor accidents, warning that staying put could land you a Dhs1,000 fine and six black points. And yes, there's an app for that. The Saed app lets you report non-injury incidents in just five minutes: Tap 'Report an Accident' Enter your mobile number Upload your driver's licence, car registration and clear photos of the damage Hit submit and get your accident report sent straight to WhatsApp The new rule is all about keeping traffic flowing and roads safer. No injuries? No excuses. Use the app, skip the traffic jam and avoid that hefty fine. No more minimum speed limit on E311 If you've ever nervously watched your speedometer creeping below 120kmph on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, take a deep breath – Abu Dhabi Police have officially scrapped the minimum speed limit on this major motorway. First introduced last year with a Dhs400 fine for dawdlers, the rule is now a thing of the past. The aim? To make the road safer and more accessible, especially for heavy vehicles and drivers who don't fancy treating every commute like a race. You'll still need to obey the maximum speed, though – so don't get too comfy. Two major roads cut speed limits Two of the capital's busiest highways got a speed limit trim – so if you haven't already adjusted your driving habits, now's the time. Here's the new speed breakdown: Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11): Down from 160kmph to 140kmph Abu Dhabi – Sweihan Road (E20): Down from 120kmph to 100kmph The changes are part of a wider push to improve road safety and reduce serious accidents across the emirate. So whether you're dashing to brunch or heading out for a desert drive, keep an eye on those speed signs. A discount when you pay up within 60 days Got a fine? You now have options. If you settle it within two months of the violation, you'll get a 35 percent discount – no paperwork, no fuss. Missed the deadline? You can still score a 25 percent discount if you pay within a year. These incentives apply to most violations, excluding the most serious offences. It's a practical move designed to keep your wallet happy – and keep your driving record clean. Jaywalking punishments even if you're hit If you're caught jaywalking or are hit by a car while crossing a road with a speed limit of 80km per hour then it's likely that you won't be able to file a complaint against the driver of the car since you would also have broken the law. The updated 2025 UAE traffic law mentions that you'll face civil and criminal liabilities if you've failed to comply. A civil liability would be any compensation for damages incurred – so you could potentially have to compensate a driver if they crash as a result of you crossing the road or, more likely, not be allowed to make a claim against a driver. Under the new law, if you're caught jaywalking on roads with a speed limit of 80km per hour then you could face a minimum prison sentence of no less than three months and a fine of no less than Dhs10,000.
