(HT Photo) The deceased were identified as Sachin Sharma, 27, a taxi driver, and Laxmi Kumar, 50, a daily wager, both residents of Prem Vihar in Khora Colony, Ghaziabad, police said. According to police, a call was received around 12:30pm via Dial 112, informing them that two men were lying unconscious inside a Hyundai Aura CNG car parked near a park close to a private school in Sector 62. 'Upon getting information, a team of Sector 58 police was rushed to the spot, and a forensic team was called,' said Amit Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of the Sector 58 police station. Police found that the car was locked from the inside with the key still in the ignition, both the petrol and CNG tank were empty.'Sachin was found lying on the front seats, while Laxmi was seated in the rear. There were no visible injury marks on their bodies,' SHO Kumar said, adding that the car was later towed for inspection. During the preliminary inquiry, it emerged that the two men had been missing since Sunday night. 'When they didn't return home by Monday morning and their phones remained unreachable, family members began looking for them. Around 12 noon, locals informed them that Sachin's car had been parked in Sector 62 since the previous night,' the SHO said. Sachin's father, Ramgopal Sharma, was among those who reached the scene. 'Initially, they tried knocking, but after getting no response, Ramgopal broke the window and unlocked the car,' police said. A senior police officer said that family members had informed them that the two men were regular alcohol consumers and often spent time drinking inside the car. 'It is suspected that they consumed alcohol on Sunday night and turned on the air conditioner to rest. The car may have run out of fuel while the AC was still on, leading to lack of oxygen and suspected asphyxiation,' the officer said, requesting anonymity. Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem, and the exact cause of death will be determined by the autopsy. The vehicle will also be examined by technicians to rule out any mechanical fault or CNG leakage, officials said, adding that the CNG tank was factory-fitted.

Staged assault, fake injuries and extortion: Muz'nagar cops bust plot to derail rape case; CHC man among 2 held
The Muzaffarnagar police exposed a meticulous conspiracy involving a fake attempt-to-murder case, forged injuries, and extortion - all to weaken the investigation in an ongoing rape case. Two persons, including a staff member of the community health centre (CHC) in Bhopa, have been arrested in connection with the plot. Accused Aftab Alam along with CHC staffer Mohd Khalid was arrested by Muzaffarnagar police (HT Photo) According to senior superintendent of police (SSP), Sanjay Kumar Verma, the case unfolded on July 27, when a man named Ammar, son of Mohammad Hasan, filed a complaint at Bhopa police station. He alleged that his elder brother, Aftab Alam, was shot at while inspecting their sugarcane fields. The complaint named Gul Sanvwar and Savir, sons of Shamsher, along with an unidentified third person as the attackers. A case was registered under BNS Section 109(1) (attempt to murder). However, what seemed to be a straightforward case of violence soon turned out to be a calculated hoax. During the investigation, police uncovered that Ammar's brother Mujammil was in jail in a rape case filed two months ago by the wife of one of the accused in the fake firing case, Gul Sanvwar. With his bail already rejected, the family of the accused allegedly began pressuring the rape survivor to withdraw the case. When the survivor refused to agree to a settlement, Ammar and his associates devised a scheme to file a false firing case to frame the rape victim's husband and his family members. A crucial player in this plan was Khalid, a ward boy posted at the CHC in Bhopa, who created a fake medical report to show Aftab as injured in the firing. On July 27, Aftab was inflicted with fake injuries using anaesthetic and surgical tools. He was then taken to a forested area where blank aerial shots were fired to simulate a crime scene. The police were informed via emergency helpline Dial 112, and a false FIR was subsequently lodged. Meanwhile, Ammar allegedly extorted ₹50,000 from the rape survivor's husband and was demanding an additional ₹5 lakh under threats of further false cases and harassment. The truth came to light when police examined the medical report and found glaring discrepancies. Upon deeper probe, the entire conspiracy was unravelled. Acting swiftly, police arrested Aftab Alam and CHC staffer Mohd Khalid. From their possession, police recovered ₹30,000 in cash, surgical equipment, anesthetic drugs, a blood-soaked vial used to mimic bullet wounds, and a burnt kurta used to stage the fake attack. Both accused were arrested on Wednesday, and further legal proceedings are underway. The police are also examining the role of others involved in the conspiracy, including whether any more government employees were complicit.

Bareilly couple robbed on way back from temple, woman killed
A woman was allegedly murdered and robbed on the Bareilly-Wazirganj highway while her husband was held at gunpoint late Wednesday night. The couple was returning from Purnagiri temple when they were waylaid by around half a dozen armed men, police said on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Amrawati, 35, and her husband as Om Sharan -- residents of Vyooli village in Wazirganj block. The couple was rushed to the Aonla CHC, where the woman was pronounced dead upon arrival. (HT Photo) As per reports, after briefly stopping at Amrawati's parental home in Motipura village, Aonla, they resumed their journey on a borrowed bike at around 11:30pm. They were intercepted by the group near Kanthari temple on Wazirganj road. The group, armed with country-made pistols and sharp-edged weapons, held Om Sharan at gunpoint and asked Amrawati to take off her ornaments. When she refused, one of the accused struck her repeatedly on the head and face with a sharp-edged weapon until she collapsed to the ground, bleeding profusely, police said. The attackers then looted Amrawati's earrings and mangalsutra and also robbed Om Sharan of cash before fleeing the scene, police added. Om Sharan later called his brother-in-law, an advocate friend (Anil), and emergency services via Dial 112. A police team rushed the couple to the Aonla community health centre, where Amrawati was pronounced dead upon arrival. Om Sharan's brother-in-law told the police that the couple had gone to the temple while their children (a son and a daughter) stayed back. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Anurag Arya and SP (south) Anshika Verma also reached the spot while the police's field unit, Special Operations Group (SOG), surveillance and forensic teams collected evidence from the crime scene. A murder and robbery case was registered based on Om Sharan's complaint. The police recovered Amrawati's mangalsutra and earrings from the crime scene, raising questions about whether the attack was entirely motivated by loot. Om Sharan did not sustain serious injuries, though investigators noted scratch marks on his chest. 'The nature of the injuries and items recovered from the crime scene suggest that murder was the primary motive,' SSP Arya said. 'We have formed three separate teams to investigate the case and arrest the culprits,' the SSP said.
