Three new 9/11 victims have been identified more than 20 years later thanks to DNA technology
Almost twenty four years ago, on 11 September 2001, the world was turned upside-down when the Twin Towers in New York were attacked by the al-Qaeda terrorist group, resulting in the deaths of over 2,700 people. Some families who lost loved ones in the devastating event were sadly never able to locate their remains, leading to a lack of closure. Now, three more victims have been formally identified through painstaking DNA testing and scientific advancements; the New York Times reports that this brings the total number of remains formally matched to victims up to 1,653 out of an estimated 2,753. Over 22,000 unidentified body parts were retrieved from the rubble in the aftermath of the planes crashing into the towers, and scientists have been largely testing bone fragments in the hopes of finding matches. One newly identified woman has remained anonymous at the request of her family. The other two victims have been confirmed as Barbara Keating, who died aged 72, who was on the American Airlines Flight that was flown into the north tower (the first of the two to be hit), and Ryan Fitzgerald, a 26-year-old who was working as a foreign currency trader in the south tower when a plane crashed into it. "Nearly 25 years after the disaster at the World Trade Center, our commitment to identify the missing and return them to their loved ones stands as strong as ever," chief medical examiner, Dr Jason Graham, said in a statement. Along with Keating's remains, part of a bank card and her hairbrush were recovered in 2001 but nothing was identified as a DNA match until this year. Fitzgerald's remains were discovered in 2002. Barbara Keating's son, Paul, said he was grateful to New York officials and scientists for continuing to diligently attempt to give families closure through their work. He described his mother as a "lifetime overachiever" who supported single mothers and those living with intellectual disabilities, with close ties to her local church where she served as a secretary. In her obituary, Keating is described as a two-times cancer survivor who was "smart, tough, professional and funny [...] She could always find a restaurant with a good martini". "It's just an amazing feat, gesture – it's more than that, because they've been doing it as their life for 24 years," her son Paul said in an interview with the New York Post. "We're talking about moving six blocks of Manhattan to Staten Island and going through it milligram by milligram for 24 years. "No one's ever done something like that for me, my family ever and I couldn't thank them enough." Eric Adams, the Mayor of New York, said of the new identifications, "The pain of losing a loved one in the September 11 terror attacks echoes across the decades, but with these three new identifications, we take a step forward in comforting the family members still aching from that day." Kelsey Parker says The Wanted's Tom's mum is supporting her after baby son's death with new partner
Kelsey Parker, the widow of singer Tom Parker from The Wanted, who sadly died in 2022 of a brain tumour, has given her first interview about losing her baby boy, Phoenix, at 39 weeks. Little Phoenix was Kelsey's first child with her subsequent partner Will Lindsay and although the pregnancy was a surprise, she said on her Instagram account that it was one of the best unexpected gifts she could have received following the loss of Tom aged 33. Heartbreakingly, baby Phoenix was "born sleeping, forever loved" in June. Now, Kelsey has bravely spoken out about the loss of her son in an interview. Speaking to The Mirror, she said, "I didn't think I'd be living a relived experience, first losing Tom and now losing Phoenix, but I think with any grief and loss, you have to take each day as it come and work through it." Sadly, it's believed that around one in 250 pregnancies that are beyond the 24-week mark result in a loss, as per NHS data. The podcast host also shared how her two other children, Aurelia, 6, and Bodhi, 4, have been processing the sudden loss of their new sibling. "We wanted the happy ever after and to have Phoenix but that didn't pan out for us," she shared. "I spoke about it like I did with Tom, I just told them the truth. "I think that's all you can do with your children, in anything you're going through, be honest. Because I think people underestimate their children and what children can cope with. Children have little ears and they listen to a lot of conversations." Kelsey also revealed that Tom's parents have been a huge support to her during this extremely difficult time, and that she speaks with his mother, Noreen, on a regular basis. "We [have spoken] to each other every day since losing Phoenix and she was just as devastated as as every family member because she wanted that happiness for me and the kids." As for how she's coping on a day to day basis, showing up for her family is somewhat of a tonic, says Kelsey. "You have to be brave and show up and that's what I try and do. Show up for my children so they can look at me and go, you know what, my mummy's very strong. She will get us through anything." In sharing her story, Kelsey will no doubt be helping countless other parents going through a loss to feel less alone. Pamela Anderson just shot down rumours of a Meghan Markle feud in the slickest way
Pamela Anderson, who is currently riding high on her rumoured relationship with Liam Neeson (we stan so hard!!) and Top Gun promotion, just proved that she's the ultimate girls girl by shutting down rumours of an alleged feud with Megan Markle, Duchess of Sussex. Earlier this year, the Duchess launched f her cooking and lifestyle show, With Love, Meghan, on Netflix, which some viewers claimed bore a strong resemblance to Pamela's own series on Prime, Pamela's Cooking with Love, which also features cooking and entertaining tips. Some online commentary in response included barbed remarks about Meghan 'copying' Pamela's idea, from format to name. The trailer for Pamela's show dropped back in October 2024, around three months ahead of the trailer for Meghan's, and her series came out the week before the Duchess of Sussex's aired – however, we all know that TV shows take a long time to prepare, shoot and edit, so the more realistic explanation (rather than copycat-ism) is that both women had similar ideas independently of one another and the timelines just slightly overlapped. Now, Pamela has come out to confirm that this is very much the case and that there's no ill feelings between her and Meghan. When appearing as a guest on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Pamela was asked, "On a scale from one to 10, how much of a rip-off did you feel like With Love, Meghan was of your show, Pamela's Cooking with Love? There were articles saying these two shows were very similar," the host queried. In response? Pamela quickly stated, "One – I didn't [...] I didn't really look, but I didn't invent cooking shows. She's just doing her thing." Amen to that! There's space for everyone and no need to pit the two women against one another. The second series of With Love, Meghan is set to be released on Netflix later this year and as yet there's no confirmation that Pamela's Cooking with Love will be returning. Calvin Harris and Vick Hope announce birth of first child with controversial Instagram post
Presenter and author, Vick Hope, has welcomed her first child with DJ, Calvin Harris, a baby boy named Micah – and the couple have shared some intimate photos of the birth, plus some special post-birth moments, to celebrate. In a post from Calvin's account, re-shared by Vick, a series of images have been posted showing little Micah snuggled up with his dad, Vick and Micah in a birthing pool, and a jumpscare shot of a placenta. Calvin captioned the round-up, "20th of July our boy arrived. Micah is here! My wife is a superhero and I am in complete awe of her primal wisdom! Just so grateful. We love you so much Micah ❤️❤️❤️." As well as the placenta shot, a steamer containing chunks of the placenta was show, along with the organ in its final form: a jar of pills. Some women choose to have the placenta, an organ that develops during pregnancy to nourish the developing baby, turned into pills following the birth, believing they can help support recovery, energy levels, balance hormones and stave off depression. However, strong scientific evidence of this is lacking and it appears to be mostly anecdotal – but hey, absolutely each to their own! Commenting on the post, along with plenty of joyful well wishes, fans picked up on the placenta trilogy of pics, with one popular comment reading, "Placenta and placenta pills were not on my bingo card for today but ok". Another added, "Swiping: "Oh wow!…. That's amazing….. Congratula….. WHAT THE F*CK!?"" Singer Becky Hill also commented, writing, "love to see the placenta!! amazing we grow a whole new organ to provide life! good job not wasting it either, that's some goddess magic right there!" Prince Harry finally speaks out on Prince Andrew physical fight rumour
Another day, another report of a royal family rift – only this time, the rumours extend to a physical fight. According to a new biography on Prince Andrew, he and Prince Harry apparently had a physical fight at one point over comments made concerning Meghan Markle. Prince Andrew stepped back from public life after his disastrous Newsnight interview in 2019, which centred on his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The biography, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York by Andrew Lowni, and a Daily Mail article, allege that Prince Harry and Prince Andrew fell out at a family gathering after Andrew described Meghan as an 'opportunist' and said Harry's relationship with her would not last. In response, "punches were thrown" reportedly leaving Andrew with a bloody nose. Now, a spokesperson for Prince Harry has stepped in to clear up – and firmly deny – this particular round of rumours. According to PEOPLE, Harry's rep said, "I can confirm neither of those things are true. Prince Harry and Prince Andrew have never had a physical fight, nor did Prince Andrew ever make those comments about the Duchess of Sussex to Prince Harry." They added, "Such are the gross inaccuracies, damaging and defamatory remarks made in the Daily Mail's story, I can confirm a legal letter from Prince Harry's counsel has been sent to the Mail."
