Jhonata Diniz admits he had to go for the safe win against Alvin Hines at UFC 317
LAS VEGAS – Jhonata Diniz met with MMA Junkie and other media members Saturday after his unanimous decision win over Alvin Hines at UFC 317. Diniz (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) outworked Hines (7-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) to open the prelims at T-Mobile Arena. Hines stepped in for Justin Tafa on less than three weeks' notice, and Diniz said that change of opponent influenced how he wanted to fight. 'I knew the pace in this fight would be the difference in the victory,' Diniz said. 'I know most big guys in the heavyweight division don't have good cardio. I always want to bring a war like that and bring a fast pace.' Diniz was working off the first loss of his MMA career, which came this past November against Marcin Tybura from a doctor's stoppage at UFC 309. A second straight loss at heavyweight never is a good thing in the UFC, so the Brazilian said leaving UFC 317 with a win was of paramount importance. '… It's not my fight style. I hate fighting like that. But they already changed my opponent for 2.5 weeks of preparation. I had to make a safe fight to get the victory.' Check out Diniz's post-fight interview in the video below.

UFC 317 – Ilia Topuria vs Charles Oliveira LIVE RESULTS: Card on NOW as two title bouts top the huge bill
Diniz vs Hines - Round Three Hine's face is battered, swollen and bloodied. Diniz can't miss with his left hooks. But he's still in this one and is coming dangerously close to landing a hard overhand right to the head. Diniz's head movement is keeping. him safe, for now. But just as I say that, he winces in pain from an accidental eye poke. He takes just over a minute and a half of a break before resuming the action. Hines has another takedown attempt stuffed by a solid-looking Diniz. Diniz gets rocked by a big overhand right but fires back with a clubbing left hand of his own. Hines lands a head kick, which briefly stuns Diniz. But the Brazilian lands one of his own seconds before the horn. That was a great round, one, in my opinion Hines won. Chisanga's scorecard: 29-28 Diniz

Ex-Brazil boss Fernando Diniz set for Vasco move
Rio De Janeiro, May 9 (UNI) Former Brazil national team boss Fernando Diniz has reached a deal to take charge of Vasco da Gama, according to widespread media reports. The 51-year-old agreed to a contract that ties him to the Rio de Janeiro club until December 2026, Globo Esporte reported on Thursday. It added that the parties needed to resolve minor contractual details before confirming the appointment publicly. Diniz replaces Fabio Carille, who was sacked on April 27 after the club's poor start to the season. Vasco is currently 14th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings - nine points behind leader Palmeiras - with just two wins from seven games so far. Diniz, who was Brazil's manager from July 2023 to January 2024, has been out of work since parting ways with Cruzeiro in January. His first match in charge of Vasco will be the team's visit to Vitoria in Brazil's top flight on Saturday. UNI/XINHUA BM
