Several parts of AP to receive rains for four days amid depression in Bay of Bengal

Rains have been sweeping across the Telugu states as a depression in the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, making landfall between Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Meteorological Department has indicated that the storm is expected to weaken within the next 12 hours. As a result, thundershowers and lightning have been reported in various locations across coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema. Authorities have advised fishermen in coastal areas to refrain from fishing due to rough sea conditions. The Disaster Management Agency has announced that rain is anticipated across 20 districts in Andhra Pradesh due to the depression and the ongoing southwest monsoon. Conditions are particularly favourable for light to moderate rains in Nandyal, YSR Kadapa, and Tirupati districts in Rayalaseema, with light showers expected in the remaining districts. In Telangana, the Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert valid until June 2, predicting rain for the next four days. The southwest monsoon has established itself across the region, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall to parts of Kothagudem on Thursday, as well as significant rainfall in Mahabubabad, Siricilla, Adilabad, Jagtial, Jangaon, Kamareddy, Khammam, Nirmal, and Nizamabad districts. Flooding occurred on major roads in Hyderabad following evening rainfall. Traditionally, the last week of May corresponds to the Rohini Karthi period, which is marked by abundant sunshine. However, the early arrival of the southwest monsoon has resulted in heavy downpours across the Telugu states during this time.

Weather dept. predicts early arrival of southwest monsoon

This year, the monsoon is expected to arrive earlier than usual, providing much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. The Southwest Monsoon, a crucial contributor to the nation's agricultural sector, is progressing actively. According to the Meteorological Department, favourable conditions suggest its expansion towards the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as well as parts of the south-central Bay of Bengal, within the next four to five days. A surface depression is likely to develop in the southeast Bay of Bengal, near the Andaman Islands, on Wednesday, and if conditions remain conducive, it could evolve into a low-pressure area. Scattered rainfall is anticipated across the state until the end of the month, although the Meteorological Department has yet to make a definitive announcement on this. Heavy rain is expected along the northern coast and in Rayalaseema on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a possibility of further precipitation in parts of Rayalaseema on Thursday. Amidst these weather changes, temperatures have been soaring. On Monday, the maximum temperature recorded in Kakani, Narasaraopet mandal, Palnadu district was a scorching 43.7 degrees Celsius, followed closely by Inkollu at 43.5 degrees, Juvvigunta at 43.3 degrees, and Mogaluru at 43.1 degrees. In total, temperatures exceeded 41 degrees in 116 locations across 17 districts. On Tuesday, maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 42 and 43.5 degrees Celsius, as noted by Kurmanath, MD of the Disaster Management Agency.

Weather alert: AP, Telangana to witness heatwaves and rains

The Telugu states are currently experiencing a dramatic shift in weather conditions, leaving residents to grapple with both oppressive heat and severe thunderstorms. On Friday, the highest temperatures were observed in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Khammam, and Nalgonda, with Adilabad recording the highest temperature in Telangana at a sweltering 40 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, Hyderabad experienced a comparatively milder minimum temperature of 36.2 degrees. The Meteorological Department has indicated a continuation of high temperatures across various districts on Saturday, predicting a maximum of 40.3 degrees in Adilabad and a minimum of 36.6 degrees in Bhadrachalam. Conversely, the state is also bracing for moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, which may reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour. In light of this forecast, the Hyderabad Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 33 districts statewide. Similar conditions are prevalent in Andhra Pradesh, where the Disaster Management Agency has warned that heat intensity is expected to rise further. On Friday, maximum temperatures soared throughout the state, with Saturday predictions suggesting a range between 42 and 43.5 degrees. The Meteorological Department has warned of possible heatwaves in several districts, particularly in Palakonda of Manyam district, Gokavaram in East Godavari, and Yeleswaram mandals of Kakinada. By Sunday, extreme heatwaves are projected in seven mandals, with heatwave conditions likely to affect 46 mandals overall. As residents contend with soaring temperatures and the threat of heavy rains, the unpredictable weather continues to pose significant challenges across the region. Light to moderate rains with thundershowers are anticipated on Saturday in isolated areas of Alluri, Seetharamaraju, Chittoor, Annamayya, and Sri Sathyasai districts, while scattered light rains are expected in other districts.
