Two people died and over 200 were injured during the 'Dahi Handi' festivities in Maharashtra on Saturday. The victims were both from Mumbai, including a 14-year-old - who was one of the 'govindas' - and a 32-year-old man.A Mumbai civic official said that the teenager, who recently recovered from jaundice, didn't take part in the pyramid formation and fell unconscious while sitting in a tempo. He was declared dead by doctors on arrival at hospital. India reported 358 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the country's total active infections to 6,491. With 158 cases, Gujarat recorded the highest number of fresh infections among all states and union territories, followed by Karnataka (57), West Bengal (54), Delhi (42), and Tamil Nadu (25). According to data released by the Union Health Ministry on Monday, Kerala has reported the highest overall number of Covid-19 cases (1,957), followed by Gujarat (980), West Bengal (747), Delhi (728), Maharashtra (607), and Karnataka (423). Most Covid Cases Mild Due to the rising Covid-19 cases, the Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources had said. Official sources have maintained that most cases are mild and managed under home care. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3 under the chairpersonship of Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services, to evaluate the Covid situation and preparedness measures. Representatives from the Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, central government hospitals in Delhi, and all states and Union Territories were part of the meeting. 'Testing is recommended for all admitted SARI cases and 5 per cent of ILI cases as per guidelines, and positive SARI samples are sent for Whole Genome Sequencing through the ICMR VRDL network, " an official source said. Covid-19 Surge As of June 2025, Covid-19 continues to pose a global health challenge, with a noticeable uptick in cases reported across several regions. According to the World Health Organization, over 150,000 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in 90 countries between April 21 and May 18, 2025—an increase compared to the previous 28-day period. Test positivity rates have climbed to 11 per cent in 73 countries, reaching levels last seen in July 2024. The surge is most pronounced in the Eastern Mediterranean, Southeast Asia, and Western Pacific regions, largely driven by emerging variants such as NB.1.8.1. NEW DELHI: India recorded four fresh fatalities in Covid patients on Saturday, including that of a full-term pregnant woman from Madhya Pradesh. Govt update stated that the deceased woman suffered from seizures during delivery and later it was found that she was Covid positive. Maharashtra, which has recorded 17 deaths in Covid patients over the last few weeks - the highest for any state - reported one more death taking the toll in the state to 18. Kerala also reported a Covid death in a cancer patient, taking the state's toll to 12. The fourth death was recorded in Tamil Nadu. W ith this, the total number of deaths due to Covid this year has touched 59, while the active case tally has reached 5,755. In view of increase in cases and deaths, Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness for Covid. States have also been instructed to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators and essential medicines in view of rising cases. Haryana recorded 31 new COVID-19 cases, mainly from Gurugram and Faridabad, bringing the state's active case count to 87. Authorities are ensuring that local health systems remain prepared for any rise in cases. ANI 27 May 2025, 02:28 GMT+10 Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 27 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been continuously reviewing the situation created by rains in the state and has instructed the entire administration to be on alert mode. He has ordered immediate panchnamas to be conducted in the places where damage has occurred. He is in constant touch with the state Chief Secretary and the state Disaster Management Cell. Pune, Satara, Solapur, Raigad, Mumbai and MMR areas have received heavy rainfall in the state, officials said. Twenty-five houses have partially collapsed in Baramati and seven people trapped in the flood have been rescued. About 80 families have been shifted to safer places. Two people have been rescued from the flood situation in Indapur. An NDRF team has reached Phaltan. Thirty people were stranded near Dudhebavi village. They have been provided with accommodation and food facilities. Officials said Solapur received 67.75 mm of rain. Six people were stranded in the flood in Malshiras taluka and have been shifted to a safe place. One person died due to lightning in Raigad, while the Mahad to Raigad Fort road has been closed due to heavy rain. Mumbai received 135.4 mm of rain in 24 hours, officials said. Complaints of short circuit incidents were received from 18 places and complaints of building walls collapsing at five places. Mumbai Municipal Corporation, Fire Department, Mumbai Police and all other agencies are geared up. NDRF teams are ready at five places in Mumbai for any kind of help. Meteorological Department has predicted rains with thunder and gale force winds in Mumbai. (ANI)
