NYT Connections Today: July 17 Hints And Answers (#767)
Find the links between the words to win today's game of Connections. Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. You can also read my weekend editions of this column at my new newsletter, Pastimes. Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Thursday, July 17 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. If you make four mistakes, it's game over. Let's make sure that doesn't happen with the help of some hints, and, if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats. If you have an NYT All Access or Games subscription, you can access the publication's Connections archive. This includes every previous game of Connections, so you can go back and play any of those that you have missed. Aside from the first 60 games or so, you should be able to find our hints Google if you need them! I was delighted to see a reference to Super Mario World, one of my top five games of all time on the top line. POKE and PAC could have been references to Pokémon and Pac-Man, respectively. The rappers/rap-group references caught my eye too -- WU-TANG (Clan), BIGGIE (Smalls), (Tu)PAC (Shakur) and SNOOP Dogg. But it became clear very quickly that those were a red herring of sorts. HARD FEELINGS had to be preceded by "no," and I found three other words that fit the bill. That took care of the greens. Here, BIGGIE means "big deal." I figured that the spying words/phrase would be the yellows and that assumption proved to be correct. At that point, the purples seemed abundantly clear to me. (DRUM AND) BASS, (CAMI)SOLE and (CAPE) COD all stood out as types of fish. I vaguely remembered that "tang" was a type of fish too, so that took care of the ostensibly most difficult group of the day. That left the blues. Of course, Super MARIO WORLD was my key to figuring out that connection. A super PAC is a type of political committee that helps fund election campaign advertising. That was a more straightforward game than I first suspected. A perfect game today extends my streak to 142 wins. Wordle hints today for #1,488: Clues and answer for Wednesday, July 16
Hey, there! We're already reached the midway point of this week, and we hope things are going swimmingly for you. Let's keep your Wordle streak afloat, shall we? Here's our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Wednesday's puzzle (#1,488). It may be that you're a Wordle newcomer and you're not completely sure how to play the game. We're here to help with that too. Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. There is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game's success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it's little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day's secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren't in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. However, you can still use those letters in subsequent guesses. You'll only have six guesses to find each day's word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It's also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT's website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets and Discord. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication's games, you don't have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You'll have access to an archive of more than 1,400 previous Wordle games. So if you're a relative newcomer, you'll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day's game. Everyone using Chrome placed on red alert and told to clear browsing data immediately
Anyone who uses Chrome to surf the web must be on high alert and check they haven't downloaded and rogue browser extensions. There's a worrying alert for those using Google's popular Chrome web browser, and it's not something anyone should ignore. It appears that a number of extensions have been released that come laced with malware, and it could give hackers the ability to spy on daily browsing sessions. That means online crooks might be able to see exactly what Chrome users are looking at online, along with stealing highly personal data. The rogue extensions were first spotted by the team at Koi Security, and they use a clever tactic to avoid detection. When first released and downloaded, they appear completely clean of any viruses. However, once users have installed the extensions, hackers then add the data-stealing spyware at a later date. It's a concerning issue, especially as it's thought that over 2 million people are thought to be affected. A total of 18 Chrome extensions have been found to have the malware, with many getting top reviews and even appearing on Google's own Chrome store. They include emoji keyboards, weather services, YouTube extras and more. In fact, the security team at Malwarebytes is urging those affected to clear their browsing data without delay. "Clear all browsing data (history, cookies, cached files, site data) to remove any tracking identifiers or session tokens that may have been stolen or set by the malicious extension," Malwarebytes explained. Chrome users are also being advised to check for any suspicious activity on accounts and make sure they enable two-factor authentication. Another top tip is to reset the browser. "Reset your browser settings to default," Malwarebytes explained. "This can help undo any changes the extension may have made to your search engine, homepage, or other settings. Note: this will also undo any changes you have made manually. Alternatively, look for signs like unexpected redirects, changed search engines, or new toolbars."
