Five European Castles That Court Travelers With Kids
Castles, with their mix of history, glamour and culture, can be a highlight of any European vacation. But take heed, young families! Trips to castles might sound inherently kid-friendly, especially for little people in the Disney Princesses stage, but they can easily break a cardinal rule of traveling with children: Thou shalt maximize the time kids can spend rambunctiously doing things, and minimize the time they must spend quietly looking at things. As the mother of two, I have learned the hard way that visits to castles can easily descend into just 'looking at things': spectacular historic architecture and long hallways of priceless objects to be viewed quietly, from a respectful distance. Even my older daughter, who has a longstanding fascination with the Tudors, has limited patience for exploring their residences. Luckily, a number of castles offer children's activities that are exciting enough to be attractions all their own — and to serve as a bribe for bearing with the tapestries and throne rooms. Here are five castles that offer delights for boisterous children and history-loving parents alike. For Pint-Size Dragon Slayers Hampton Court Palace, home of Henry VIII, runs family-friendly events, including arts and food festivals and demonstrations of historic cookery in the palace kitchens. This summer, there will be a Peter Rabbit-themed trail in the extensive gardens, which older visitors may recognize as a filming location for shows such as 'Bridgerton.' Want all of The Times? Read more: Flamingo Beach returns to Glasgow shopping centre - here's what you need to know (Image: Supplied) (Image: Supplied) It will also feature family entertainment, including meet-and-greets with Disney Princesses. Calvin Crichton, chief princess at Big Feed, said: "We're all finding things tough at the minute – I have a little one myself so I really do get it. "We wanted to create a fun event for the whole family where budget isn't an issue, so it's totally free to come along and join in the Swapshop or even put together a stall yourself to clear out the loft or cupboards." Parents are encouraged to bring items their children have outgrown to exchange for something new. Calvin said: "People seem to be excited about the chance to get rid of or upcycle stuff – it's sustainable and saves cash and really it's just the smart thing to do. "Kids outgrow stuff, lose interest and move on – so those toys can become a dream come true for other children." Read more: 'Beautiful Writing' exhibition and workshops coming to Glasgow this summer (Image: Supplied) (Image: Supplied) More than 20 indoor stalls are already confirmed for the event and families are welcome to set up their own stalls free of charge. Calvin stressed that anyone can take part, with or without a stall. He said: "We have had so many messages – kids can have their own stalls if they have an adult with them to look after them, and you don't have to have a stall to trade. "Bring along your items and see what you can swap them for, or if you take a stall you can buy, sell, barter – all of it is up to you. "We all need to pull together to help each other right now and we're making sure there's lots free of charge on site to keep the kids entertained. "This is about giving back and also just sharing a bit of good – escape all the madness of the world, trade some toys and games and then hang with the Disney Princesses. 'You might say, it Disney get better than that'

Almost spit out my coffee — John 'Rock & Roll" Tolkien (@jrockandrollt) June 16, 2025 Reacting to the post, when a user asked, 'Bro they tell you the price when you book, if you're surprised that's on you." To this, the father informed, 'I didn't book it or look at the menu, I'm a being of pure entropy." Another jokingly asked, 'Please tell me you have 35 kids." After many started guessing things about his money, choices and even if he was ready to be a good parent, the man shared a simple update. He said he earns well as a manager at Chipotle and was recently given a raise to $23 an hour. To help pay for the Disneyland trip, he also opened a new credit card. He made it clear that he's handling things fine and is doing well overall. As per Disneyland, for starters, kids are served a three-layer tower filled with small bites like coconut chia pudding, mini lobster rolls, beignets, banana wraps and cornbread. For the main course, kids can pick from favourites like Mickey-shaped waffles with chicken, creamy mac and cheese, and crispy bacon. Adults get more options, such as soft scrambled eggs, turkey sausage with sweet pears and figs, devilled eggs, slow-cooked short ribs, truffle mac and cheese and colourful roasted carrots served on a smooth veggie mash. The meal ends with themed desserts like Ariel's cake pops, Pocahontas-inspired sorbet, chocolate puffs for Aurora fans and pistachio macarons named after Tiana.

John Tolkien shared a snap of the nearly $1,000 receipt on social media after his family's breakfast at Disneyland California. The Disneyland Princess Breakfast totalled $937.65 for three children and two adults, which included a $150 tip — just over 20% of the original amount. ''Princess Breakfast' at Disneyland with my kids,' John wrote on X. 'Almost spit out my coffee.' The post has been viewed more than 16 million times on the social media platform, with thousands of users expressing their horror at the cost. Disney Princess Breakfast Adventures is offered at Disney's Grand Californian Hotel and Spa.. Prices start at $142, with the Disneyland website stating: "Treat your child to an unforgettable 3-course breakfast and enchanting encounters with some favorite Disney Princesses." It adds: "Dreams come true in the Trillium Room inside Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, where you'll be served a sumptuous three-course breakfast. Kids can let their imaginations soar during one-of-a-kind Princess-themed activities. "Upon arrival, Disney Princesses are waiting to greet you and share in your hopes and dreams prior to taking a photo on a beautiful private patio. You may take part in storytime with Belle or learn some fierce warrior poses with Mulan." Guests enjoy a three-course breakfast, with tiered appetizer towers including lobster rolls, beignets and cornbread. Children can enjoy mains like chicken and waffles and macaroni and cheese. Adults can choose from scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, deviled eggs and braised short ribs. The restaurant serves a selection of desserts, including cake pops, sorbet and macarons. Following John's post on social media about the breakfast, thousands of people shared their views on the pricing. 'Please tell me you have 35 kids,' one person commented. Another wrote: 'That's ridiculous. So torn about going to Disney — could literally go to Italy for a month for the same amount.' A third said: "This is one of those moments I'm not tipping a single penny, and you can all call me a monster for it." A fourth commented: "The restaurant saw you coming from a mile away, huh? Poorly plated food sold at premium prices. You could have eaten at a 3 star Michelin restaurant for cheaper." Appearing to see the funny side, John replied to his original post: "I'll just take a gas station burrito & sugar-free Red Bull and hang onto the remaining… $930." The dad later added: "Service was attentive and enthusiastic, princesses were all trained pro-actresses and spent a lot of time with the kids. I enjoyed it."
