Hubballi: A new education initiative titled 'Mission Vidyashakti' will soon be launched in Dharwad district to enhance academic outcomes for students in classes 6 to 8. Following the success of 'Mission Vidyakashi' for SSLC students, this scheme aims to improve learning quality and push the district into the top 10 in statewide rankings over the next two to three years. The district administration launched the 'Mission Vidyakashi' programme last year. Despite not getting the expected results in the examination, the district secured 18th position, moving up four places from the previous time. It was limited to only 10th class students. However, keeping in mind the students of 6th, 7th, and 8th classes, the 'Mission Vidyashakti' scheme was formulated in collaboration with IIT and IIIT. Under this scheme, students are taught online using smart classes in schools. SM Hudedamani, deputy project coordinator Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan at the DDPI office, said that under this scheme, subjects like Mathematics, Science, and English, which are difficult for students and which most students fail in the exams, will be taught. In collaboration with IIT, IIIT Karnataka-Hyderabad, online classes will be conducted by subject experts for 1 hour in the afternoon, three days a week. Students can interact online about the subjects they do not know and get answers from experts,'' said Hudedmani. Its main objective is for students to score good results in the difficult points for students in Mathematics, Science, and English were already identified, and the syllabus was prepared by subject experts. Students will be taught online in smart classes by skilled education experts from IITs and IIITs. One teacher with computer experience in each school will be given the responsibility of managing it. They will be trained by June 15. The plan is to start the scheme in the last week of June, she informed.

Ahead of the Bakrid festival, Dharwad district administration has constituted taluk level task forces headed by respective tahisldars to prevent any violation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. Chairing a district review meeting on the implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020, Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Divya Prabhu G.R.J. said that slaughter of animals was permitted only in the registered slaughter houses. 'Any illegal slaughter of animals and transportation of meat is prohibited under law. And those involved in it are liable for punishment,' she said. The Deputy Commissioner said that under the Act, the slaughter of he and she buffaloes above the age of 13 years was allowed and slaughter of bull, bullock, cow, and calves was prohibited. 'For effective implementation of the law, unauthorised slaughter houses should be identified and seized and action should be taken against the guilty,' she said. Divya Prabhu directed the officials to hold extensive awareness programmes in both urban and rural areas ahead of Bakrid on June 7 and also ensure that no unauthorised slaughterhouse functioned. The taluk level task forces would have tahsildars, police officials, taluk panchayat executive officer, corporation and municipal official and veterinary doctors. Every task force should ensure that no unauthorised slaughterhouse was allowed to function and such slaughterhouses if found should be immediately seized and further legal action should be taken, she said. The Deputy Commissioner asked the officials to ensure protection of stray cattle and shifting them to nearest government or private cattle sheds. If the owners allow their cattle to move around freely, such cattle should be shifted to cattlesheds and the owners should be imposed penalty under the provisions of the Act, she said. She said that there were one government and ten private cattle sheds in the district and the concerned corporation of municipal office should make arrangements for shifting of the cattle. The police should register cases against the accused and take further action, while veterinary officers should ensure protection of the cattle. The head of the task force (tahsildar) should coordinate with all members to ensure effective implementation of the Act, she said. Superintendent of Police Gopal Byakod, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahaning Nandgavi, Chief Veterinary officer Lingaraj B.S. and others were present.

Dharwad: Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu has directed the HDMC and other local bodies in the district to initiate action to remove the stray cattle occupying the roads and other public places and send them to goshalas. Taking a serious note of the report, DC Divya who chaired a district level meeting of officials from the police, veterinary, revenue and HDMC said the stray cattle should be sent to goshalas. "If the cattle found occupying a road or public place belongs to an owner, he should penalised and punished as per the law. The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 stupulates imposing a fine of Rs 3 lakh and imprisonment upto five years" the DC said. The DC directed the officials to ensure that animal slaughter is done in places that have been permitted as per law and not at unauthorised places. Task force formed The DC also constituted task forces under the chairmanship of tahasildar's of respective taluks to oversee the proper implementation of the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020 during Bakrid which will be observed on June 7. The meeting was attended by all the tahasildars, veterinary department officers, police officers and others.

DHARWAD: Orange alert has been declared for Dharwad, Belagavi, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura districts by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for next four days beginning on May 24, as it has forecast heavy to very heavy rains with gusty winds. IMD said these districts will receive heavy rains with a wind speed of 40-50 km per hour and thunder storm on May 24, 25, 26 and 27. The deputy commissioners and the chairpersons of the District Disaster Management Committees have appealed to the people, to be alert and follow the safety protocol announced earlier. In Dharwad district, DC Divya Prabhu has asked people, especially those residing in Tupparihalla and Bennehalla stream basin to be careful. IMD has predicted that moderate rain/thunderstorm with gusty winds are likely to occur at many places in Bagalkot, Haveri, Koppal, Raichur and Yadgir districts. In South Interior Karnataka and Malnad region, heavy rains/thundershowers with gusty winds are likely to occur at a few places over Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu and Shivamogga districts, the IMD said. It has forecast light-to-moderate rains/thundershowers with gusty winds in Chitradurga, Davanagere, Ballari, Bengaluru (Rural), Bengaluru Urban, Chamarajnagar, Chikkaballapura. Kolar, Mandya, Mysuru, Ramanagara, Tumakuru and Vijayanagara districts. In Coastal Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada district will receive heavy to very heavy rains, the IMD said.

Dharwad: The mango mela, aimed at facilitating the mango growers get scientific price to their produce by eliminating the middlemen menace and to help the consumers get quality fruit, began on the horticulture office premises in Dharwad on Tuesday under the joint auspices of the district administration and horticulture a dozen varieties of mangoes including alphonso, kalmi, mallika, badami, kesar, neelam among other varieties of fruits are being kept for sale at the mango fest, which will be held till May commissioner Divya Prabhu inaugurated the mela and stated that the mango festival is gaining popularity over the years and has emerged as an annual govt has sanctioned a Mango development board to Dharwad and it is coming up at Kumbapur in Dharwad taluk. A sum of Rs 7 crore has been sanctioned and this board will facilitate the growers to adopt best practices for branding of the fruit, the DC informed that the horticulture department will hold a series of training programmes for the growers on protecting the fruit and exporting board aims to link the consumers to the growers, besides take up research & development, training for mango growers and also help the growers to export the fruit. The board here will give a push to mango production and also provide a solution to the growers problem, DC Divya asked people to visit the mango mela and encourage the growers by buying the fruits, which are free from artificial ripening. This year, magoes are grown in over 12,000 hectares land and Jogyellapur, Kelgeri, Tegur, Amblikopp, Halligeri, Mansur, Mugad, Mandihal, Devagiri, Navalur, Itagatti, Yerikopp, Kalkeri, Kyarkopp and other regions are known as alphonso mango belt. The yield is expected to be over 29,000 tonnes and it is exported to metropolitan cities and also to growers, the soil is fertile here and the climate is perfet for mango growing. However, due to natural vagaries this year, the yield is less. On an average, four tonnes of mangoes can be grown on one hectare land but this time, it has reduced to just over a tonne.
