Rangers summer signing held transfer talks with Ibrox club while wearing CELTICS strip

That's why Djeidi Gassama will be wishing he could turn back the clock and at least change his attire before meeting with Rangers for the first time. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 1 Djeidi Gassama joined Rangers this week Credit: PA Russell Martin snapped up the pacy wide-man from Sheffield Wednesday in a £2.2million deal this week as Gers finally secured a replacement for Vaclav Cerny. Gassama, 21, enjoyed two impressive seasons at Wednesday after moving to the UK for the first time in 2023 following his exit from PSG. After signing for Wednesday, Gassama would have been quickly informed about everything to do with the English club, including their history and rivalry with their neighbours across the city, Sheffield United. And it looks like the winger will need the same lessons on all things Scottish football after sealing his move to Glasgow. Gassama spoke to Martin and Rangers when the Govan side were down at St George's Park for their training camp this month. The 21-year-old was there with his former club Wednesday who had also travelled to the home of English football for training. He met with the Light Blues for signing talks in the facilities but had no time to change from the casual clothes he was wearing at the time. And that meant he arrived at the meeting wearing an unfortunate top - as he was donning a Boston CELTICS shirt. It's understood the wide-man had absolutely no idea about the rivalry in Glasgow and hadn't cottoned to the irony of choosing that particular sports brand for the meeting. But it of course didn't impact his move to the Gers as he went on to pen a four-year deal at Ibrox. Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane He's bolstered an area which Rangers desperately needed strengthened following Cerny's return to Wolfsburg. Bassama could feature against Panathinaikos at Ibrox on Tuesday as he's registered in Martin's squad for the crucial qualifier. 'It was crazy to be at PSG with Messi, Mbappe & Neymar'

Despite playing just one minute of senior football at Paris St-Germain, Djeidi Gassama learnt a lot from his superstar team-mates at the Ligue 1 new Rangers signing impressed at youth level for PSG before spending time on loan in Belgium and going on to sign for Sheffield is the winger's latest destination, and he says his road to Govan has been shaped by valuable lessons from the world's best."It was crazy to be in a team with players like Messi, Mbappe, Neymar," the 21-year-old told Rangers TV."I started playing when I was young and then I played for the Under-19s at PSG and made my [first-team] debut."It was a good experience for me to train with them, I learnt a lot of things about the gym and what they do on and off the pitch. "They give 100% and when you see them you have to do the same, and even training with them is like a game."The past two years moving to Sheffield, they gave me good progression and good experience in English football. I took my chance and now I'm here, and I think I can continue to improve here."

Rangers new signing Djeidi Gassama will 'get supporters on the edge of their seats' claims Russell Martin

Rangers have completed the signing of winger Djeidi Gassama from Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of around £2.2million. The 21-year-old, who came through the ranks at Paris Saint-Germain as a youngster, has signed a four-year deal with the Ibrox club. Gassama has been capped at Under-20 level by France and contributed 12 goals and four assists over the past two seasons with Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship. 'He is certainly an exciting player who will get supporters on the edge of their seats, and I believe he will add an extra dimension to our attack with his qualities,' said Rangers boss Russell Martin. 'He is hungry to improve as a player and, most importantly, is desperate to pull on the Rangers jersey and help deliver success to the club.' Gassama joins fellow new recruits Joe Rothwell, Manny Fernandez, Nasser Djiga, Max Aarons, Lyall Cameron and Thelo Aasgaard in Martin's new-look squad. 'I am very happy to be here,' Gassama said. 'I am very excited to start with my new club, it has a lot of history. 'This is a big club, and I need that for my next level and I think it can help me progress.' Mail Sport understands Rangers are still in the market for another wide player, and potentially a new striker as well. Their season will begin next week when they face Panathinaikos in the first leg of a Champions League qualifier at Ibrox.

Clock ticking down to Rangers' European signing deadline as club faces race to reshape squad for Panathinaikos showdown

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT feels somehow like it has always been this way. But new Rangers boss Russell Martin is facing as big a race against time as ever this summer to get new signings in for two of the biggest games of the club's season. 3 Rangers will register Djeidi Gassama for their European clashes Credit: PA 3 Russell Martin faces a familiar dilemma Credit: Willie Vass New owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe are still getting their feet under the table, not to mention sporting director Kevin Thelwell, but time stands still for no man and Martin knows he has to have a competitive team on the pitch in time for next Tuesday's huge Ibrox showdown against the Greeks. But first he has to try to get as many bodies in as possible for the second qualifying round deadline - which comes as early as THIS THURSDAY at 11pm. Participating clubs, including Rangers, can name no more than 25 players on List A, of which eight are reserved exclusively for "locally trained players". It adds: "No club may have more than four 'association-trained' players listed in these eight places on List A, which must specify whether they 'locally trained' players are 'club trained' or 'association trained'. This means they have to been registered to either the club OR the association in question (Scottish FA) for three continuous years between the ages of 15 and 21. This rule has caused major chaos for the Ibrox side in the past and it could pose a headache again this time around. Philippe Clement did his dinger last season when the Gers' squad building meant he had to navigate the Europa League group stages without the likes of Danilo, Ianis Hagi. and Rabbi Matondo. And for the last 16 clash in the Europa League this season, the Gers could name only TWENTY ONE players on their A list - in addition to the likes of Ross McCausland, Bailey Rice, Leon King, Mason Munn and Findlay Curtis on their B list (ie born after January 2004 and attached to the club for two continuous years since then. If teams have fewer than eight players on this A list who come into the category, they lose one of their 25. As it stands, with Rangers can currently call upon SEVEN 'locally trained' players for their A list - Liam Kelly (club trained), Ross McCausland (club trained), Kieran Wright (club trained), Robbie Fraser (club trained), John Souttar (association trained), Connor Barron (association trained), Lyall Cameron (association trained). Rangers boss Russell Martin opens up on transfer plans as he delivers updates on Dessers and Igamane That doesn't include the likes of Leon King, Mason Munn and Bailey Rice, Josh Gentles and Findlay Curtis - all of whom are still young enough to be included in the B list. So the Gers should be able to name 24 players on their A list - just one shy of the permitted number. New boys Djeidi Gassama, Max Aarons, Joe Rothwell, Manny Fernandez, Nasser Djiga can join with mainstays such as James Tavernier, Mohamed Diomande, Nedim Bajrami, Rabbi Matondo, Nico Raskin, Jefte, Danilo, Oscar Cortes, Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane. Throw in Kieran Dowell, who has played so far under Martin in pre-season, and that's up to 23. Which leaves the likes of Clinton Nsiala, Ben Davies, Ridvan Yilmaz and Robin Propper vying for ONE remaining spot. Any more incoming transfers before Thursday's deadline, of course, could change that equilibrium again. While all clubs must register their teams at 11pm on Thursday, they are also permitted to bring a further two new boys in right up until 24 hours until the first leg of the Panathinaikos clash. But any new introductions must come at the expense of someone already in the group. 3 Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page
