Two of Scottish football's Italian contingent could be set for moves this summer in what could be a busy transfer window for Scots abroad. It was a hugely successful season for a number of Scottish players in Italy, with Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour winning Serie A with Napoli and Lewis Ferguson lifting the Coppa Italia with Bologna. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, down in the second tier of Italian football, there was another Scottish success story - with left-back Josh Doig playing a big part in Sassuolo winning Serie B and earning immediate promotion back to the top flight. Josh Doig helped Sassuolo win promotion back to Serie A this season. | Getty Images Doig has been a regular for Sassuolo this season after joining them from Hellas Verona 18 months ago, and now the 23-year-old is being linked with a move to Juventus. According to reports in Italy, new Juve manager Igor Tudor's transfer priority is new wing-backs and the Croatian coach has been impressed by Doig's development since moving to Italy from Hibs three years ago. Doig is currently with the Scotland squad ahead of their friendly away to Liechtenstein on Monday night and could win his first cap if selected in Vaduz. But his form with Sassuolo, where he has been one of their chief attacking outlets down the left flank, has caught the eye of Tudor, who is expected to play a 3-5-2 formation at Juventus next season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Doig's price-tag He has also been linked with Bologna wing-back Dan Ddoye, who is also on international duty right now with Switzerland. And if Tudor was to launch a bid for Doig, it could cost Juventus upwards of £12 million to land him, as he contracted to Sassuolo until 2028. Doig came through the youth ranks at Hibs and was part of the team under Jack Ross that finished third in the Premiership during the 2020/21 campaign. He was sold to Verona in the summer of 2022 and then moved on Sassuolo, although he nearly signed for Marseille in France before the transfer fell apart at the last minute. Another former Hibs player could be on the move in Italy, with midfielder Liam Henderson weighing up his future after his contract at Empoli expired last month. A Celtic academy graduate, Henderson was part of the Hibs team that won the Scottish Cup in 2016. He made the move to Italy in 2018 with Bari and has remained there ever since, playing for Verona, Lecce, Palermo and Empoli. It now appears, though, that the 29-year-old could be on his way back to British football. It has been reported that English Championship side Bristol City are weighing up a move for the out-of-contract deep-lying midfielder. Swansea City had also been suggested as a potential suitor, but cold water has been poured on that link by Welsh media outlets.

Uncapped Scottish star 'emerges as shock transfer target for Juventus'

But the Serie A giants could end up signing another Scottish ace instead, who is also performing at a high level in Italy. Doig, 23, has been playing in Italy since he left Hibs to become the latest Scot in the country back in the summer of 2023. Doig, who is still waiting on his first Scotland cap, spent 18 months with Hellas Verona initially before swapping clubs to Sassaulo in January last year after a move to Marseille collapsed. Sassuolo were relegated in the following summer but they will make their return to Serie A in the coming season after Doig and Co clinched the Serie B league title. The left-back made 23 appearances during the title-winning league campaign. But he may not be around to help them with their Serie A charge for a second time if a new report is to believed. According to SportMediaset (via Il Primato Nazionale), Doig is now on the radar of Juventus after catching their eyes with his recent displays for Sassuolo. The two-time Champions League winners secured a top four finish in Serie A last season after Igor Tudor replaced Thiago Motta as manager in March. The Croatian's future at the club is currently up in the air but it's looking increasingly likely that he will get the job on a permanent basis following the club's turnaround in the league. Doig would become just the second ever Scot to play for Juventus should he seal the dream move. Hibs star Josh Doig accepts DoubleTree by Hilton Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year trophy He would follow in the footsteps of former Rangers and Newcastle striker Willie Aitken, who spent two years with the Old Lady between 1928 and 1930. Doig has only ever featured twice on the European stage in his career - when he faced Santa Coloma and HNK Rijeka in Europa Conference League qualifiers for Hibs in 2021. But if he joins Juventus then he could make his first outing in the Champions League next season. Doig could also be in line to win his first senior cap for Scotland against Liechtenstein on Monday. Josh Doig a 'transfer target' for Juventus as former Hibs star could land dream ticket to the Champions League
The left back is said to be on the Turin giants radar after helping Sassuolo win promotion back to Serie A Josh Doig has reportedly emerged as a shock transfer target for Juventus. The full back is one of several Scots who have enjoyed great success in Serie A since he made the switch from Hibernian back in the summer of 2023. Doig who is hoping to win his first senior cap for Scotland against Liechtenstein on Monday - spent 18 months with Hellas Verona before joining Sassuolo in January 2024 after a move to Marseille had fallen through. Sassuolo were relegated to Serie B six months later but have jumped straight back up to the top tier after romping to the league title, with former U21 international Doig making 23 appearances. And according to SportMediaset (via Il Primato Nazionale), those displays have done enough to catch the eye of the Turin giants. The two-time Champions League winners secured a top four finish in Serie A last season after Igor Tudor replaced Thiago Motta as head coach back in March. And while the Croatian is yet to officially be confirmed as I Bianconeri boss beyond the summer, he is likely to get the gig on a full-time basis following an impressive end to the campaign. Where Doig to make the dream move to Turin, he would become just the second ever Scot to pull on the famous colours of the Old Lady. He would follow in the footsteps of former Rangers and Newcastle United striker Willie Aitken, who spent two years with the Italian powerhouses between 1928 and 1930. The report also adds that as well as Doig, Tudor wants to push for a deal for Bologna winger Dan N'Doye. The Switzerland wide man played a pivotal role in Bologna's Coppa Italia triumph alongside Scotland star Lewis Ferguson last season, the club's first major piece of silverware since 1974. Former Aberdeen midfielder Ferguson was heavily linked to Juve last year, having worked under previous manager Motta at Bologna. The 25-year-old is now said to be a target for Serie A champions Napoli, where he could line-up in an all Scottish-midfield with international pals Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour. here and our Celtic community here.

Inside the resurgence of Josh Doig, the often forgotten Scot playing in shadow of McTominay, Gilmour & Ferguson in Italy
He's playing under an Italy legend who he describes as a 'role model' ITALIAN JOB Inside the resurgence of Josh Doig, the often forgotten Scot playing in shadow of McTominay, Gilmour & Ferguson in Italy SCOTT McTOMINAY regularly makes the headlines and Lewis Ferguson isn't far behind. But it's another Scot plying his trade in Italy - one often rather unheralded - who will be celebrating today. Advertisement 3 Josh Doig has enjoyed a superb campaign with Sassuolo Credit: Getty 3 Doig's Sassuolo have been promoted back to Serie A Credit: Getty 3 Doig has yet to win his first senior Scotland cap Credit: Willie Vass Aaron Hickey's move to Bologna from Hearts in 2020 kick-started a boom period of Scottish footie stars heading to Italy. While Hickey's switch kicked-off the trend, former Celtic and Hibs star Liam Henderson was very much already there and has represented five different clubs. Advertisement Top Scots stars McTominay, Ferguson and Billy Gilmour are all there in Serie A now and flourishing. Scotland striker Che Adams has also enjoyed success after heading to Torino. Bologna captain Ferguson has tasted Coppa Italia glory this season while McTominay and Gilmour are on the cusp of winning the Serie A title with Napoli. But there's one other Scot who's enjoyed silverware success this season. That man is Josh Doig. Advertisement Now aged 23, it's been three years since the left-back swapped Hibs for Italy. A youth product at rivals Hearts before joining the Hibees, Doig went on to become SFWA Young Player of the Year in 2021. A £3million deal in July 2022 took Doig to Hellas Verona on a four-year contract. Hibs star Josh Doig accepts DoubleTree by Hilton Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year trophy He initially got off to a flying start, providing assists and scoring inside his first few weeks of competitive football in Italy. The 2023/24 campaign would prove to be a more frustrating affair for Doig. Advertisement It started well however, with Doig continuing to feature for Hellas Verona regularly and catching the eye of several big clubs. Linked with a number of potential moves, he looked all set to sign for French giants Marseille. Agreements were reached and Doig looked set for Ligue 1. However, Hellas Verona took their time in signing-off on the deal and Marseille ended up dramatically pulling out. They went and signed another left-back instead. Advertisement Doig did move on in January 2024 but instead stayed in Italy. Sassuolo paid £5million to land him and got a deal over the line. The club had established itself in Serie A after being promoted to the top tier for the first time ever in 2013. That run came to an end as Doig endured a nightmare start to things at the club. They were relegated at the end of last season, dropping to the second tier for the first time in 12 years. Advertisement It was a setback for the club and indeed Doig, who no doubt wouldn't have had any intention of playing Serie B football. In an interview late last year, Doig said: "Obviously it was really disappointing to come down, but then what you going to do? It's happened." You could argue, however, that it's been the making of him. Last summer, Fabio Grosso was appointed Sassuolo manager. A legendary left-back himself for the likes of Inter Milan, Juventus and Italy, he seemed an ideal leader for Doig to develop under. Advertisement That's how it has worked out with Doig labelling Grosso a 'role model.' He told Not the Old Firm: 'He is so helpful because you know you can trust him. He's done it all. 'He's done everything in the game and at my position. To have a role model like that be your gaffer, it's so good to bring me forward. "Even in training, it's so important because obviously he's done it, he's seeing what I'm doing and to pick up on the little things maybe I wouldn't notice and maybe other managers would notice because they're not too particular with left back." Doig has been able to return to the top of his game this season. Advertisement Josh Doig's career Born in Edinburgh on May 18, 2002 Came through academy system at Hearts before joining rivals Hibs in 2019 Got first team chance during loan spell at Queen's Park in 2020 Made senior Hibs debut in August 2020 and went on to become key player for the Easter Road club Won SFWA Young Player of the Year award for 2020/21 season Signed new deal at Hibs in November 2021 before joining Hellas Verona for £3million in July 2022 Moved to Sassuolo in January 2024 after move to Marseille collapsed Relegated to Serie B last year but secured title-winning promotion back to Serie A at first time of asking Back in Steve Clarke's Scotland squad for June friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein Capped at under-18 and under-21 level, Doig is yet to make his senior international bow And Sassuolo are back to the top of table of Italian football. Doig has excelled this season in a dominant showing for the club who have been promoted back to Serie A at the first time of asking. They finished top of the Serie B table, clinching the title in the process. A dominant side all season, they finished six points clear of Pisa in second and 16 points clear in the race for automatic promotion. Doig's performances have caught the eye, too, and after a frustrating period he might feel he's starting to fulfil his potential. Advertisement Personally, he seems settled too. Doig admitted moving to Italy was a massive "culture shock" at first, but has declared being at Sassuolo is the happiest he's ever been. And he might soon have reason to be even happier - the prospect of a Scotland debut. Doig has been included in squads before. But almost three years since his first call-up under Steve Clarke, he still hasn't earned his first cap. Advertisement That could all be about to change, however. He's been rewarded for his stellar campaign with a spot in the squad for the friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein next month. Return of popular Johnstone Fire Engine Rally could be on the cards amid councillor's plea
Councillor Andy Doig issued a call to reinstate the popular parade of the vintage engines at last week's full council meeting. A return of the much-loved Johnstone Fire Engine Rally could be on the cards as Renfrewshire Council develops a calendar of cultural events for its town centres. Councillor Andy Doig delivered a plea to reinstate the popular parade of the vintage engines from the fire station to Houstoun Square at last week's full council meeting. The independent politician received the unanimous support of elected members in the chambers for his motion on Thursday. The call was issued amid a suggestion the hot topic may already be under consideration by the local authority as part of a £150,000 budget investment. Councillor Doig, an independent representative for Johnstone North and the surrounding villages, explained why he is so eager to see the re-emergence of the rally which ran in the town from 2014 until 2019. He told the Paisley Daily Express: "I wanted to make it clear there was a feeling among the community and among the traders that it would be a good thing to bring it back. "For a number of years, right up until Covid, it was an extremely successful event because what they did was the fire tenders would meet at the fire station in Johnstone and they would come down to Houstoun Square. "It was a big event and people could see them coming down then go to the square. "It was magic. There would always be a bit of a buzz about the place and the traders would really benefit. Youngsters would have the opportunity to climb on board the various emergency vehicles and see how they had transformed over the years. Councillor Doig added: "It was a great event for families because the kids loved it. It was always very popular with the children of Johnstone." The veteran politician's motion, which was agreed at the meeting without a hitch, asked the local authority to recognise the "success and popularity" of the rally for both retailers and the community alike in the past. It added: "Council instructs the council's events team to liaise with the Fire Brigades Union and calls for the reinstatement of the Johnstone Fire Engine Rally as soon as possible."
