'Presence' Blu-Ray Review - Steven Soderbergh Brings Pathos To Haunted House Tale
A family becomes convinced they are not alone after moving into their new home in the suburbs. For in-depth thoughts on Presence, please see my colleague Gaius Bolling's review from its original theatrical release here. Video Quality Decal Releasing brings Presence to Blu-Ray with a good 1080p video presentation, but this is a film that deserves a 4K UHD Blu-Ray release. Thankfully, a 4K UHD Blu-Ray is being released at the same time as the Blu-Ray, but it was not made available to us for review. The film is visually quite shadowy and dark, even when not immersed in the night, thanks to the cinematography from Soderbergh himself. The black levels on the Blu-Ray are slightly elevated to obscure some fine detail, but it is not an exceptional issue. This is something we could see being improved on the 4K UHD. This disc experiences some banding in the darkest moments, and other subtle digital quirks keep the transfer from being perfect. For the most part, the image is crisp and clean with favorable textures present in the house. The costumes likewise provide clear textural details. Flesh tones are natural with a stark amount of detail such as lines and pores present in close-ups. The presentation delivers a notable amount of depth in some scenes despite the somewhat claustrophobic setting. This release holds up quite well, but we will likely pick up the 4K UHD Blu-Ray to have the best version for this one. Audio Quality This Blu-Ray comes with an effective Dolby Atmos track that captures this disquieting narrative without issue. Ambient sounds are a key part of this experience, and noises are specifically deployed in the rear channels for a fully three-dimensional sensation. The height channels complement the main channels very well by tastefully expanding the soundscape. Specific developments add texture to the low end to liven things up. Dialogue comes through clearly without being obscured by any competing sounds. The score emanates from the speakers with firm fidelity. The audio track does exactly what it needs to and more. Optional English SDH and Spanish subtitles are provided. Special Features Trailers Final Thoughts Presence is another incredible outing from Steven Soderbergh directing an effective script from David Koepp that uses the potential of a haunted house tale as something of a Trojan horse for the true horror of domestic instability. The unique POV of the camera allows this film to feel alive and invasive in all of the right ways. The veteran performers are expectedly great, but the younger newcomers make a mark of their own. The film does not overindulge in traditional scares, but those who want something that invades deeper on an emotional level should be quite pleased. Decal Releasing has released a Blu-Ray featuring a good A/V presentation and a small selection of supplements. If you do love the movie, you might want to spring for the 4K UHD Blu-Ray. Recommended Presence is currently available to purchase on 4K UHD Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray, DVD, and Digital. Note: Images presented in this review are not reflective of the image quality of the Blu-Ray. Disclaimer: Decal Releasing has supplied a copy of this disc free of charge for review purposes. All opinions in this review are the honest reactions of the author.

Breathtaking Kimberley VR experience now showing in Freo
Fresh off the Great Kimberley Wilderness success at the WA Museum Boola Bardip earlier this year, the VR experience is making its way to the port city. The 35-minute immersive VR experience narrated by Luke Hemsworth, older brother to fellow Hollywood stars Chris and Liam, and produced by award-winning WA filmmaker Briege Whitehead will show at the WA Maritime Museum for three weeks from this weekend. In a custom-built gallery, with surround sound and large-scale digital projections across all wall surfaces, audiences will have a 360-degree view of some of the planet's most ancient landscapes in a guided tour of places that few outside the traditional owners have ever seen in person. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Whitehead said that included transporting viewers over the edge of waterfalls, across stunning coastlines and into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. 'There are so many locations I know, or as far as we've been told, that we're the first people to capture them on camera,' Whitehead said. The film was shot and produced in 8K format using drones capable of capturing 3D footage and with Dolby Atmos sound. 'I call it story-living, rather than the storytelling,' Whitehead said. 'That's what the ability of 360 degrees in a VR headset provides, because everywhere you look, it's like you're literally standing there, or flying over the waterfalls or hanging out of the helicopter with Luke next to you.' Fremantle Labor MP and Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk said the exhibition was leading the way in digital immersive storytelling by combining technology with authentic storytelling. 'We are proud to extend this experience to the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle, supporting an initiative that highlights WA's rich cultural heritage, deep Indigenous knowledge, and awe-inspiring landscapes,' she said.

TCL launches QM8K Mini-LED TV with 144Hz refresh rate, Atmos FlexConnect and powerful B&O sound system
TCL has finally announced its flagship Mini-LED TV for 2025 in the QM8K, which takes up a slew of incredible features that make it stand out against the rest. Confusing as it might sound, the QM8K isn't an 8K model, but a 4K LCD TV with a 144Hz refresh rate. It replaces last year's QM851G, sporting a whole new panel, "ZeroBorder" design, and an enhanced audio system made by Bang & Olufsen. You can already scoop one up today in both a 65-inch and 85-inch sizes at participating retailers, starting at $2,499. TCL has gifted the new and improved QM8K Mini-LED TV a fresh new VA panel that purportedly improves upon the dreaded off-axis viewing issues on many such TVs. Even some of the best TVs with Mini-LED backlighting have poor angled viewing, but thanks to its WHVA (Wide Horizontal Viewing Angle) panel that leverages sophisticated subpixels, the QM8K amends these complaints. TCL has also gifted the QM8K a new 'Precise Dimming" Mini-LED system that makes HDR content look superb. The technology essentially enhances contrast and also targets minimal lag between Mini-LED zones, specifically in Game mode. We'll have to get the TCL QM8K in for testing before we can nominate it among the best gaming TVs, but all signs are looking positive. Kitted with a 144Hz refresh rate that can even ramp up to 288Hz in 1080p resolution, it's got some serious spunk that's made all the better with its incredibly thin border. Of all the features you can praise the QM8K for, its bear-bezel-less design is an immediate standout. The screen looks as if it's floating in front of you with a 3-4mm "ZeroBorder" framing that will look fantastic when wall-mounted. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. If you thought the design and base specs of this new Mini-LED TV were enough, there's more to love. TCL has partnered with Bang & Olufsen to design a punchy sound system that fills the room using up-firing speakers with Dolby Atmos support. Speaking of Dolby Atmos, the TCL QM8K is the first TV to come equipped with a new FlexConnect feature that aims to rid the entertainment setup of pesky wires. You'll be able to seamlessly combine FlexConnect-supported speakers throughout the living room to expert surround sound directly with your TV. You can already buy the TCL QM8K Mini-LED TV today at Best Buy in both the 65-inch and 85-inch models. TCL says the 75-inch and 98-inch models are bound for official debut in June. At $2,499 for its 65-inch set, the TCL QM8K does have a steep asking price, especially in the face of Hisense's rather budget U8QG that's just $1,397 on Amazon at the time of writing.

TCL's newest TVs will automatically calibrate wireless speakers
Dolby's automatic speaker calibration tech FlexConnect finally comes to market via TCL's 2025 QD-Mini LED TVs. The company had originally announced the technology back in 2023, and was set to debut it with TCL's 2024 TV lineup. FlexConnect lets users place wireless speakers anywhere in a room without worrying about perfect configuration. The surround sound will then be optimized automatically based on the layout of the room and the position of the speakers. The first audio device to support this tech will be TCL's Z100 smart speaker, which is designed to pair with TCL's FlexConnect-enabled TVs. TCL's Precise Dimming Series, which includes the QM6K , QM7K and the newly announced QM8K , will all be FlexConnect-compatible. Users will be able to pair up to four Z100 speakers with their TCL TVs, which will work in concert with the TV's built-in speakers to deliver intelligently calibrated Dolby Atmos sound. This innovation allows for immersive spatial sound without the need for a perfectly symmetrical speaker setup. In today's joint press release , John Couling, Senior VP of Entertainment at Dolby Labs, said 'With Dolby Atmos FlexConnect, consumers can unlock even more flexibility and adaptability in how they design their home entertainment systems, while removing the stress of whether their speakers are in the right location to get an incredible Dolby Atmos experience.' In the same release , TCL said the Z100 speakers are expected this summer. The Z100 and the TCL Precise Dimming Series represent the first FlexConnect products launched in the United States. Along with the QM8K launch, TCL also announced its first model of party speakers, as well as the Q65H, its latest Dolby Atmos soundbar.
