2024 BYD Dolphin Premium Long Term
The BYD Dolphin is the brand's most affordable machine, an all-electric hatch starting at $39,990 for the Essential. That's $10k cheaper than when it first arrived here. The choice for buyers is whether to go for the Essential value, or pay extra for the $48,990 Premium. This more potent model has recently joined the NZ Autocar line-up, resplendent in its striking pink livery. The difference between variants is more than just specification. Essential comes with a 70kW/180Nm motor but the Premium has double the power, with 150kW and 310Nm of torque. That means 0–100km/h drops from a sedate 12.3sec to a brisk seven seconds in the Premium. Read more 2023 BYD Dolphin Extended review Of more relevance perhaps is the extra range you get with the Premium. The Essential offers a respectable WLTP driving range of 340km from its 44.9kWh Blade battery. Step up to the Premium, and you'll get a larger 60.48kWh battery offering 427km. DC fast charging also improves: the Essential supports up to 60kW, while the Premium can hook up to 80kW chargers. Both models are well specified with BYD's rotating 12.8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a full suite of driver assistance systems and V2L (vehicle-to-load) functionality. The Premium adds extras like heated front seats, wireless phone charging and a panoramic glass roof. There's also a suspension upgrade. Where the Essential uses a torsion beam set-up in the rear, the Premium switches to a multi-link arrangement for improved ride and handling. Upping the spend to the Premium seems justified in our eyes, given you get more than just a few extra creature comforts. The added power, range and dynamic boost are good value for the money. Our GM, Gavin Shaw, has been enjoying the Dolphin for the past month. With his weekly mileage amounting to around 350km, he is getting by with one fast charge a week. He says this takes around 40mins, and it is easy to monitor the process if you are not in the vehicle by using the app. After being an EV skeptic for many years, he has enjoyed the refinement of the power delivery and the ample power of the Premium. Equally impressive for him are the open road dynamics with controlled body roll in bends and a good ride on the highway. His only real bugbear with the Dolphin is the thick A pillar restricting outward vision at some intersections, especially when turning right. While not a fan of the colour combination, he is getting used to the constant comments questioning his supposed lifestyle choice. He says women love the colour combination however. After having spent the past few months being electrically motivated (he was in the Atto 3 prior to this) his view on EVs has changed somewhat. He says he has been pleasantly surprised, particularly as a die-hard enthusiast of petrol power. He reckons that anyone who is hesitant about the idea of an EV should experience one for more than just a quick drive around the block. He reckons the benefits, including the relative ease of refuelling at home, can only be realised with an extended test drive. Dolphins DC Anthony Weaver Wishes Jalen Ramsey Well Amid Trade Rumors
Jalen Ramsey of the Miami Dolphins is on the trade block, and with both sides mutually agreeing to part ways, it's only a matter of time before a deal is struck. While Ramsey is still a Dolphin, the future where he dons a new jersey isn't far off. For Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, he finally shared his thoughts on losing an All-Pro and potential future Hall of Famer in Ramsey. Advertisement In an article from C. Isaiah Smalls II in The Miami Herald, Weaver commented on Ramsey leaving the Dolphins and how he's approaching the job going forward. Weaver said, "In this game, things change by the day. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ramsey. He played very good ball for us, but relationships are hard. Both sides have mutually chosen to go the other way. I respect that and wish him nothing but the best." Losing a player of Ramsey's caliber will be a challenge for the Dolphins. During his illustrious NFL career, Ramsey has been named an All-Pro three times and a Pro Bowler seven times. Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver talks to cornerback Jalen Ramsey (5) during mandatory minicamp at Baptist Health Training Navarro-Imagn Images Between his time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, and Dolphins, Ramsey has 24 interceptions and 108 pass breakups. He's also allowed quarterbacks to have a passer rating of just 76.5 when he's targeted. Advertisement In Miami, Ramsey has been named to one Pro Bowl in 2023, with his 2024 season being the first year he wasn't named to the Pro Bowl since 2019. The Dolphins gave Ramsey a huge three-year, $72.1 million extension ahead of the 2024 season. But less than a year later, Ramsey is on his way out. Weaver acknowledged the challenge he'll face, but he doesn't want any sympathy for his situation. "I'm not getting any sympathy cards from anybody. It's my job, and our job collectively as a staff, to find a way to make these pieces work. What I know is every player that is here is trying to get better and has bought in." The Dolphins' new-look cornerback room will feature Storm Duck, Kader Kohou, Artie Burns, Cam Smith, Jason Marshall Jr., Kendall Sheffield, Isaiah Johnson, Ethan Bonner, and Jason Maitre. Advertisement While in need of upgrades across the board, the Dolphins have been connected to multiple free-agent cornerbacks like Rasul Douglas and Asante Samuel Jr. Regardless of whether anyone is added, Weaver is ready for the challenge and will find a way to get the most out of the pieces in the cornerback room that they have. ‘He's been great.' As OTAs near, Dolphins coaches confirm Tyreek wants to stay in Miami
Rewind to January and you would be hard-pressed to find a member of the Miami Dolphins who thought Tyreek Hill would still be in South Florida at this point. Yet that is certainly the case as the star receiver prepares for his fourth season as a Dolphin. There are still a few hurdles ahead of him — namely recovery from wrist surgery to repair an injury that hampered him in 2024 — but signs point to the eight-time Pro Bowler being here at the start of the season. 'He's got energy every day,' Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith said Wednesday, calling Hill 'motivated.' 'He's working through his process. He's been great so far through the offseason.' Although Smith was unsure of Hill's recovery timeline, the very idea that the wideout wants to remain in South Florida is a good sign for the Dolphins offense. The Dolphins are undoubtedly a much better team with him on the field as evinced by the record-setting 2023 season. He's even begun to engender himself to his new receivers coach Robert Prince. 'Tyreek's been great,' Prince said Wednesday, adding that Hill even treated the receiver room to dinner. 'If I text him, he texts me back. If I call him, he calls me back. He says I'm going to be here, he's been here. And it's been great. I've had nothing but positive experiences with Tyreek, and he's a great leader in the room.' This comes nearly six months after the Hill prematurely subbed himself out of the Dolphins' season finale against the New York Jets. In the locker room following the 32-20 loss, Hill made it clear that he wanted a change of scenery. 'There are a lot of things I need to reassess about my career,' Hill said Jan. 5, later adding that he has 'got to do what's best for me and my family, whether that's here or wherever the case may be. I'm opening the door. I'm out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I've got to do what's best for my career. I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there.' While Hill, 31, has since walked those comments back, he still likely had to regain his teammates' trust. Keep in mind: he essentially quit at the end of the game and then said he doesn't want to be here. Apologies were needed and apparently, Hill has done just that. 'He's been working and doing all the things to show his teammates that this is where he wants to be,' Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said April 15. 'As I told you when we met with him after the season, he wanted to be here. There was no indication [otherwise]. In terms of when he's in the building doing everything, he's been great. Things happen with players.' Hill should be extra motivated following a disappointing 2024 season. For the first time since 2019, the All-Pro wideout didn't crack thee 1,000-yard mark. Context, however, is important here: not only did Hill have to deal with a fractured wrist since the preseason, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa missed six games, the most since the receiver joined the team in 2022. That said, Hill's health will be certainly something to monitor as organized team activities (OTAs) get underway in the coming weeks. The good news, however, is that appears ready to don the aqua and orange in 2025. 'Everyone is collectively trying to use the way last season went as our motivation to make sure we maximize each day,' Smith said. 'You don't look forward, you don't look to the past; just say, what do I need to get done right now, and I think Tyreek and all of the guys are really embracing that.'

Xpeng forecasts upbeat quarterly revenue on strong EV deliveries
China's XPeng on Wednesday forecast second-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates, betting on growing demand for its lower-priced electric vehicles . US-listed shares of the company rose 6.3 per cent in premarket trading. XPeng is one of the few automakers to weather China's hypercompetitive EV market, but is yet to turn a profit. In the first quarter, the company reported surging vehicle deliveries, improving gross margin and a narrower loss. 'Despite seasonality for auto sales, our quarterly deliveries hit a new historical high, making us the top-selling automaker among emerging EV companies,' CEO Xiaopeng He said. In August, the company had launched MONA M03, a mid-sized sedan that competes with BYD 's Seagull and Dolphin, as well as the higher-priced Tesla Model 3 . The Guangzhou-based company expects to deliver between 102,000 and 108,000 vehicles in the second quarter, which is about 237.7 per cent to 257.5 per cent higher than a year ago. XPeng forecast second-quarter revenue of 17.5 billion yuan to 18.7 billion yuan, the midpoint of which is above analysts' average estimate of 16.85 billion yuan, according to data compiled by LSEG. For the first quarter of 2025, Xpeng delivered 94,008 EVs, representing a 330.8 per cent increase compared with the same period last year. Gross margin stood at 15.6 per cent for the first quarter compared with 12.9 per cent from a year earlier. Last month, XPeng unveiled its upscale X9 minivan, starting at 359,800 yuan ($49,231), equipped with advanced automated-driving systems. The company also said it expects to achieve mass production of vehicles with Level 3 autonomous driving features in China by the end of 2025 - a significant step up from the Level 2 systems widely in use.
