BYD Plans to Double Overseas Sales in 2025 Despite U.S. Tariff Pressures
BYD Company (BYDDF, Financials) is planning to double its overseas auto sales to more than 800,000 units in 2025, as the Chinese electric vehicle maker looks to offset domestic competition and rising U.S. trade barriers, the company said in an announcement this week. The expansion plan, according to BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu, would give Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the United Kingdom top priority; the U.K. will be highlighted as a main market given no import taxes. BYD is building car assembly factories in Brazil, Thailand, Hungary, and Turkey to help reduce tariff exposure even further. Aiming to lower logistical expenses and legal obstacles, the firm would send local assembly parts from BYD's most popular model outside China, the Dolphin Mini electric car sells for 69,800 yuan ($9,700).The company's worldwide goals come after a good financial performance in 2024. Driven by increasing need for its battery electric and hybrid vehicles, BYD's yearly income exceeded Tesla's by $9.3 billion. Net profit increased 34% year over the 800,000 projected from foreign markets, BYD aims total vehicle sales for 2025 at 5.5 million units. In 2024, Tesla sold 1.8 million units. Mexico Should Roll Out the Asphalt Carpet for BYD
Visit Mexico City from the US these days and, on top of its usual charm, you'll notice something surprising: The streets hum with electric vehicles from China's BYD Co. Americans may be shielded from the global BYD revolution, but its impact south of the border is visibly real — and includes the colorful Dolphin Mini for less than $20,000 or versatile compact models used in ride-hailing services around the city. The company says it sold 40,000 units in Mexico last year. It expects to double that in 2025, which would put it among the country's most popular brands.

New BYD Dolphin Surf bound for UK as sub-£20k EV
Seagull is also known as the Dolphin Mini in some markets, but will be named the Dolphin Surf here The BYD Dolphin Surf will be one of the cheapest electric cars in the UK when it goes on sale later this year. Known simply as the Seagull in China, where it costs the equivalent of around £8000, the model will be made more sophisticated for its launch in Europe and the UK, including added safety technology. BYD's executive vice-president Stella Li said that while the Dolphin Surf might "not be the cheapest" on sale, it would "be the best value". It's not expected to cost less than the £15,000 Dacia Spring, the current cheapest electric car on sale, but is likely to undercut the likes of the Fiat Grande Panda and Citroën ë-C3 and cost less than £20,000 with a range in excess of 200 miles, too. In China, it's offered with a choice of 30kWh or 38kWh battery packs, giving ranges of 190 miles and 252 miles, according to the country's CLTC testing regime. There is also a choice of 74bhp and 100bhp motors. The model is also known as the Dolphin Mini in some markets, but Dolphin Surf has been chosen as the name for launch in the UK and Europe. Before the Dolphin Surf will be the imminent launch of the Sealion 7, the seventh model in BYD's UK range and the sixth electric car. UK country manager Bono Ge said BYD would go from 62 dealers now to 120 by the end of the year. The target is around 150-170 dealers longer term, a number similar to the likes of Ford and Vauxhall. Ge said BYD would surpass last year's UK sales of 8700 by the end of this month, but declined to say how many cars the company expected to sell in 2025, or what the long-term target was. Given BYD's goal is to be the world's largest car maker and the UK is seen as a key market for it, sales in excess of 100,000 will surely be the target to become a top-five challenger here. Ge said BYD's brand awareness increased from 1% at the start of 2024 to 31% at the end of it. BYD has also launched its own-brand 1360kW chargers with two charging guns as a rival to Tesla's Supercharger network. Li said there was an ambition to launch these in the UK but that this was some way off. ]]>

BYD Dolphin Surf: Budget baby EV coming to UK soon
BYD's next new all-electric model is set to be another budget arrival with the Dolphin Surf expected to go on sale in the coming months with a price below £20,000. The Surf is a new name for the car that's already on sale in other markets as the BYD Seagull or Dolphin Mini and has made it to the final three of the World Urban Car of the Year Award. The Dolphin Surf is part of BYD's Ocean Series of cars, which includes the Seal, Sealion 7, Dolphin and Seal U DM-i. With a new BYD Atto 2 joining the Atto 3 in the existing range, that will make seven new models launched in the UK in just two years. The new budget model won't be the cheapest EV in the UK, but Stella Li claims that it will be 'the best value' with a level of technology above the likes of the £14,995 Dacia Spring or £15,995 Leapmotor T03. Volkswagen has recently revealed a concept of its upcoming VW ID. 1 model that is expected to cost less than £20,000, too. The Dolphin Surf will use a version of BYD's e-Platform 3.0 and the company's blade battery tech that is built into the body of the car for added safety. Although there's no word yet on battery or range, a 38kWh battery could be expected with just under 200 miles of range. BYD claims on its website a 30 minute fast charge from 30 to 80 per cent, at speeds up to 40kW. The ocean-inspired wavy design theme is on the outside and the inside, where there's also a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless charging and 'Hey BYD' voice control. Speaking at the launch of the new BYD Sealion 7, Li confirmed that BYD had made 4.27 million new energy vehicles (either electric or plug-in hybrid) in 2024, a 1.2 million increase on 2023. A similar increase is expected in 2025 with BYD aiming to become the world's number one car makers. As well as BYD models, Li confirmed that the company's Porsche-rivalling Denza brand will be coming to the UK this year, while Yangwang with its Ferrari-rivalling U9 supercar will also be going on sale at some stage. BYD has also just announced a new ultra-rapid charging system in China, claiming to charge EVs in the same time it takes to fuel a petrol car. The new Megawatt Flash Charging system charges at speeds up to 1,360kW, adding 1.2 miles of range every second. However, Li said that it would be 'several years' before we see these chargers in Europe
