Miami Dolphins Top 10 players countdown: De'Von Achane No. 5, may be most important

Editor's Note: This is part of a Countdown to Training Camp: Dolphins 2025 series. We'll unveil two players in the Dolphins' top 10 in each of the coming weeks. MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins running back De'Von Achane feels he left a lot of yards on the field in 2024, and so he's aiming even higher for 2025. "As far as in the rush game, I always want to try to hit 1,000 yards," Achane said. "And then 500 yards receiving. I feel like I can do that." Achane is one of the fastest players in the NFL and he's one of the most skilled receivers out of the backfield, which make him a perfect fit for Mike McDaniel's offense. "Ascending player," Dolphins coach McDaniel said. Miami has moved on from veterans Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson. Achane is the lead back now, supported by Jaylen Wright, Alexander Mattison and rookie Ollie Gordon. It could be argued Achane is as important among Dolphins weapons as Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle. Why De'Von Achane is fifth-best Miami Dolphins player Achane, 23, is only 5-foot-9, 188 pounds, but he's strong and blazing fast. After a remarkable rookie season in which he averaged 7.8 yards per carry, Achane fell back to 4.5 yards per carry in his second season. The biggest problem is that Achane took too many rushes for no gain or loss, trying to make big plays that simply were not available. The addition of guards James Daniels and Jonah Savaiinaea should benefit Achane, who would actually be better off doing more of his work between the tackles. Achane has Pro Bowl potential. Nationally, he's expected to put up huge numbers. Some even have Achane ranked in their top three among fantasy football running backs. Telling Stat Only one player has ever had more than 750 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in a Dolphins season: De'Von Achane in 2024. How we see De'Von Achane's Dolphins future Achane is the unquestioned lead back for the Dolphins in 2025. He'll have to show continued durability – he played all 17 games in 2024 – with an increased workload. Achane can be soft-spoken and polite. But McDaniel views him as a player ready to take a step forward as a leader. "The first person that pretty much any skill player has to answer to if they maybe drop something or get gloved when running a route – first person they're going to have to answer to is De'Von," McDaniel said. "because he's going to be quick trigger. I think that competitiveness that he has is natural to him." Joe Schad: Miami Dolphins seek 'new identity' for 2025, but what is it? Miami Dolphins Top 10 players countdown: Edge Bradley Chubb is No. 6

Editor's Note: This is part of a Countdown to Training Camp: Dolphins 2025 series. We'll unveil two players in the Dolphins' top 10 in each of the coming weeks. MIAMI GARDENS — After missing all of last season following knee surgery, Bradley Chubb was asked his level of excitement to return to the field for the Miami Dolphins in 2025. "Ten out of 10," Chubb said with a smile during organized team activities. Chubb has 13.5 sacks in 24 games as a Dolphin. When healthy, he gets to the quarterback and creates turnovers. There's a reason why the Dolphins yielded a first-round pick to the Broncos for the two-time Pro Bowler in 2022. "He loves the game," outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow said. "He wants to be involved and he's been cooking these last couple weeks. He's getting himself ready and certainly he's eager to rock and roll." Why Bradley Chubb is sixth-best Miami Dolphins player Chubb has power and speed and also holds up against the run. Chubb, 28, is a complete outside linebacker. He's just had injury woes. "I'm a warrior, man," Chubb said of what he's learned about himself. "Not even in the sense of football, just in the sense of life. When things came and knocked me down and I had setbacks, in the moment it's like, 'Oh man,' but when you take a step back and really see it for what it is and see what God is trying to tell you in that moment, that helped me out a lot throughout this process." Chubb will be a key team leader on defense this season. Chubb is well-liked by his teammates and delivers consistent effort. The combination of Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Chop Robinson gives Miami a chance to offset an inexperienced and depleted secondary. Telling stat In 2023, his last healthy season, Chubb led the NFL with six forced fumbles. He has forced 13 fumbles in his career. How we see Bradley Chubb's Dolphins future Chubb took a pay cut this offseason to avoid release. He wants to be in Miami. And certainly Chubb wants to show Miami and the NFL he can stay healthy in 2025. In an ideal world, Chubb bounces back and stays on board for 2026, with the team revisiting his future before the 2027 season, his final under contract with the club. Miami Dolphins add this versatile, intriguing veteran offensive lineman

MIAMI GARDENS - The Miami Dolphins added versatile veteran offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill, who should compete for a backup position on the roster. Brunskill, 31, has played in 92 NFL games for the 49ers and Titans, with 66 starts. Brunskill, 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, can play guard, center and tackle. In a corresponding move, Miami waived fourth-string quarterback Brett Gabbert. Miami also placed offensive lineman Liam Eichenberg and tight end Darren Waller on the physically unable to perform list. Those players can be removed from the list at any time during the preseason and begin practicing. Miami also placed safety Ifeatu Melifonwu on the non-football injury list. Teams can activate a player off Active/NFI at any time before final cuts. Tua Tagovailoa: Miami Dolphins' relationship with Tyreek Hill 'work in progress.'

MIAMI GARDENS ― Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa pulled no punches when it came to the team's relationship with star receiver Tyreek Hill. "It's still a work in progress, not just for me but for everybody," Tagovailoa said following the first Dolphins training camp practice of the summer. Hill has apologized to teammates for his actions following the final regular season game of 2024. After removing himself from a season-ending loss at the Jets, Hill said, in part: "If that's here or wherever the case may be, I'm finna' open that door for myself. I'm opening the door. I'm out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day I gotta' do what's best for my career because I'm too much of a competitor to be just out there." Hill later walked backed the comments, but damage was done. Tyreek Hill works to rebuild trust with Miami Dolphins teammates "Everyone knows what he can do on a field, everyone respects what he can do on a field," Tua said. "But I think, you know, he's still trying to figure things out for himself as well. Kind of the man he wants to be. And, you know, he's not too young. Like everybody makes mistakes. It's just some people, you know, they... they're in a spotlight, you know, and their deals get pushed out more than some others." Hill posted receiving totals of 1,710 and 1,799 yards in his first two seasons with Tagovailoa and the Dolphins. But he recorded only 959 last season. Hill says he's been going to therapy and church and trying to be a better leader and teammate. "I think there's a lot more of vulnerability with Tyreek," Tagovailoa said. "He's conversating a lot more with the guys, not just about football, but about things off the field, being vulnerable with some of the things that people know about his personal life and things of that nature. And I think that's the first step to him building true relationships and a real connection with a lot of the guys in there." Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa sees vulnerable Tyreek Hill That Tagovailoa is not just sweeping Tyreek's season-finale meltdown under the rug is telling. "I'm not the only one that heard that," Tua said. "You guys aren't the only people that heard that. A lot of people that follow football, that follow the Miami Dolphins, that follow Tyreek, that are fans of his. Everyone has seen that. So when you say something like that, it's, you don't just come back from that with, 'Hey, my bad.' You've got to work that relationship up." Miami Dolphins suddenly one of youngest NFL teams. How Mike McDaniel plans to adjust.

MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins had one of the oldest rosters in the NFL last season. Suddenly, the Dolphins have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL entering 2025. In fact, it's the seventh-youngest roster in the NFL, according to research by Gone are cagey such veterans as Terron Armstead, Calais Campbell, Odell Beckham Jr., Jordan Poyer and Raheem Mostert. In are youngsters Jonah Savaiinaea, Kenneth Grant, Jaylen Wright, Patrick Paul and Malik Washington. "I'm always adjusting to the listener because my job is to reach the listener and produce the best product," Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said on the first day of training camp. "There's different conversations when your team's overall average age changes, but a conversation needs to be had with both parties regardless." McDaniel should be able to connect well with players who are younger because development was one of his trademarks as a young and rising coach. "I think you have to be very aware of your audience to give them the proper leadership, know what to focus on, and know what they don't need to hear or is too much," McDaniel said. "It's been an exciting process because I think we have a lot of young guys that are embracing the tutelage from the older veterans." Miami Dolphins roster features training camp youth movement There are a few obvious pros and cons to moving older players out and younger players in. Older players are more prone to missing practice and games. Older players may be more set in their ways and resistant to change. Younger players may need more time in the film room and in walk-throughs. They may also need the wise guidance of players who have have seen it and done it. There are in-their-prime veterans who will be asked to move into more of a leadership role, including Austin Jackson, Aaron Brewer, Jordyn Brooks, Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Chubb, for example, has really taken 22-year-old edge rusher Chop Robinson under his wing. What is Chubb's message to the team? "Let guys know that this is not promised and each and every day you've got to earn it," Chubb, 29, said. "God is fortunate enough to put us in this position, so we've just got to take advantage of it.' Dolphins doubters: Miami Dolphins hear the haters and doubters. 'They talk, we do.'
